The aperture is barely a stop difference on both ends. What I would miss is the little higher magnification rate.I agree on the f/5.6, what is up with that, 18-105 --> 5.6, 16-85 --> 5.6, and there is the advantage of the VR lost, even in "bright days" you need to have the VR switched on at the tele end.Nikon, bring on the FX superzoom, even 24-85 f/4 or 2.8-4 would seal the deal for me.

I am using the 18-70 DX of Nikon, all that’s missing according to your post, is the OS/VR. I kinda got sick of 5.6ish lenses. Yes, sample variation is a problem, but the good ones are incredibly good and sharp. People who have them wouldn't exchange them for anything.Don't you people see there's virtually no option for DX crowd to enjoy a little better quality without tons of money and pounds!? I don't want to haul and pay for constant 2.8's and 2x zooms. And then what's next? 5.6! Nothing in between with a little more speed, sharper and better overall. I'd buy the Nikkor 16-85, but not being 5.6. With this sigma I get 2.8-4 AND sharpness. AND OS. AND ok price.

I almost bought the actual version of this lens…I’m glad I waited. I’m going to buy this one soon. It has a Distance window, weather sealed mount (metal mount, I dont know what this Sigma has) but the Nikon lacks in aperture, nonetheless very sharp. Also nice is the 1:2,7 magnification, but I remain skeptical about the (optical) quality compared to Nikon's lens.

The build lacks a certain wow factor, Nikon already has the 16-85VR DX.
