It's Monday and the price of the Sigma SD1 is still $9700. I guess the initial price was not a typo. The SD1 kit prices are still lower than the price of the camera.

My guess is that Sigma is afraid of people modifying the SD1 mount to a Canon EF mount. As the electronic contacts for Sigmas SA mount are reverse engineered from Canon EF, you could in theory with adequate engineering skills and tools replace the SA mount with a Canon EF (and why not Canon EF-S) mount scavenged from an old camera (or as new spare parts), and have a brand new SD1 with Canon mount for all your existing EF lenses – and get autofocus, automatic aperture and all that.
If they are afraid of this, and charge an exorbitant price for the camera by itself, they “force” you to buy a bundle with a Sigma SA lens – and if you mod the camera, the lens will no longer fit, and you would likely have to sell the lens.
And in this way they will sell at least one SA lens per SD1 sold, instead of converting the camera to EF mount and buy the same Sigma lens for EF anyway. A cunning plan!
I think your over thinking this a lot…
Hey – I thought it was a great conspiracy theory!
But really – an SD1 converted to EF mount would be the bee’s knees..
Actually, an F-mount version would be better
I’m pretty sure that’s the last thing on their mind.
I’ve checked today on the official german page and there the price is 7.499€ (Body only)…
Still far from being acceptable though!

There’s a hands-on preview over at dpreview (pre-production model)…

I think Sigma have done really well to elevate their brand to a higher level with their recent lenses like the 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM, but even if the image quality is better than all other dslrs on the market they’re going to find it difficult to sell at this price.
Nikon had problems selling the D3x because of price and they were making very little profit on it…not sure who’s going to buy this Sigama ?
no one will buy this thing. and Sigma will learn their lesson.
even if everything would be good, camera reliable, service points fast and available, rental services full of sigma mount lenses, with 1/180 flash sync they cannot win any medium format dedicated heart.
But let them try, it cannot hurt to have some (even lol though) push on big players.
Funny logic Sigma has… Not wanting the owners of their lenses to buy their body. Only “attracting” (I use this term very loosely) new potential buyers by selling them the system.
My only guess to why is this is because they cant produce enough cameras to meet any demand and are therefore saving their faces this way.
@Trond, If you convert the body to EF-S, you can sell the Sigma lens bayonets to all the Sigma body users who want to use L lenses. Here’s a Sigma lens I modded to EF: http://www.ricohforum.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=5916 I had a SD body that self destructed and I was left with a useful 15-30mm full frame lens that I wanted to use on my EOS body. It works properly, but it’s not up to Canon standard; if any od the Sigma fanboys chooses to disagree with me I offer it in trade for any working Canon L lens.
@broxibear Heh, the D3X. I remember this gem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnwf2RShNV0
@gt “no one will buy this thing.” Not 100% true, at least half a dozen Sigma fans will buy one on principle. “and Sigma will learn their lesson.” Why would they? The SD-9 SD-10, SD-14 & SD-15 were hardly compelling value for money. I’d bet anything that they lost money on all their DSLR bodies.
@sadasd I wouldn’t call them reliable. Not in my experience anyway. Past Sigma DSLRs and the DP cameras have the build quality of a Mamiya ZM.
No way I’d get one…. This is the best way to kill any interest from people who could STILL give Sigma a chance…. Their unique sensor plus the other features isn’t worth at all what they ask for.
DPReview’s done a hands on preview, but they have shied away from discussing anything of any interest to the professional target market, such as:
* image quality and noise (something DPReview normally do very thoroughly),
* build quality and weather sealing (previously poor and none respectively),
* overheating (a ‘feature’ of earlier models), or
* system breadth and quality
MSRP is official on Sigma’s site: $9700.
