Here are some more leaked cameras that are going to be announced at PMA show next week:

• Samsung: six new cameras WB850F ($349) with 16MP BSI CMOS sensor, 21x optical zoom, 3-inch AMOLED screen, 1080/30p FullHD video and GPS. The DV500F model will have dual screens ($299). No word about the NX-20.
• Casio will introduce the Exilim EX-ZR200 ($380 suggested retail) with 16.1MP, 12.5x optical zoom (24-300mm), up to 30 fps, FullHD video, HDR and more.
• New GE cameras - not worth mentioning.
• Kodak: new EasyShare M750 ($170) with 16MP, 5x zoom plus Wi-Fi.
• Olympus will announce 5 new digital cameras: SP-620UZ ($199) with 21x zoom, 7 fps, HD video. The SZ-12 ($199) will have 24x zoom, 7 fps, HD video, 3D capabilities. The TG-320 ($179.99) will be the new Tough line addition.
• Panasonic will also announce 5 new cameras: Lumix SZ-7 and SZ1 will both have 10x optical zooms with Leica lenses. The DMC-SZ7 will have 14.1MP and FullHD recording. The DMC-SZ1 will have 16.1MP and 720p HD video recording capabilities.
• Vivitar will also announce new point and shoot cameras. Their top of the line model iTwist F129 ($90) will have 14.1MP, 4x zoom, 2.7-inch rotating LCD screen, 720p HD video recording.

Fuji was granted a patent 8053661 for an organic sensor. Some readers speculated yesterday that this sensor may be used in the upcoming Fuji LX mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. From the patent's summary:

An object of the present invention is to provide an organic photoelectric conversion layer exhibiting high photoelectric conversion efficiency, low dark current and high-speed responsivity, and a photoelectric conversion element and a solid-state imaging device each using the layer.

In an organic photoelectric conversion element, for realizing high photoelectric conversion efficiency, low dark current and high-speed responsivity, the organic photoelectric conversion layer used preferably satisfies the following requirements.

Patent 2011216958 from Casio is about stitching images horizontally and vertically - just like creating a panorama image, but you rotate the camera in a circle in order to capture a wider area of the scene:

Patent 2011193047 from Olympus is about using reflected light from the sensor to achieve phase detection AF (current PEN cameras use contrast AF):

Olympus also filed a patent 2011-227350 for a liquid lens. In the past Samsung and Sony have filed patents for liquid lenses.

Casio Exilim EX-ZR10 is the first camera with NEC's noise suppression technology

Few days ago NEC announced a new technology that should eliminate the AF/zooming lens noise during video recording. The sound of the moving lens is recorded and then subtracted in real time from the sound recorded by the microphone. Currently this technology is available only in the Casio Exilim EX-ZR10 compact camera.

Update: the new Samsung WB700 camera has similar technology.

Tokyo, February 16, 2011 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the development of technologies for digital cameras in movie mode that suppress the noise produced by motors and other mechanisms used for optical zooming and that these technologies are featured on system LSI for the EXILIM EX-ZR10 digital camera by Casio Computer Co., Ltd.

Conventionally, the sound generated by lens drivers for digital cameras in movie mode is recorded as noise by microphones. These new technologies suppress noise through a method that records and saves the core characteristics of sounds created by a camera lens' driving mechanisms, then subtracts this information from signals that are recorded by microphones. Furthermore, these technologies automatically adapt to lens and microphone characteristics among different products, which eliminates the need for customized product adjustment. Moreover, real-time processing is achieved while recording movies as a result of optimizing the number of calculations for noise suppression.

Use of these technologies also makes it possible to preserve ambient environmental sound, while only suppressing the noise generated by a camera's motor. Digital cameras equipped with these technologies can operate motors at a high speed, which achieves smoother zoom operation and creates a user friendly filming experience similar to the use of a dedicated video camera.

These newly developed technologies feature the following:

1. Effective zoom noise suppression without adjusting for individual microphone characteristics
   In addition to existing technologies that suppress noise from cameras and lenses, these new technologies use microphones to record and process a range of additional noises. Furthermore, automatic noise correction for individual cameras is enabled by comparing reference noise, which is based on statistical analysis of incoming signals, to the noise suppression information saved on a user's camera. As a result, no adjustments are needed for individual microphones during production and shipment, and the suppression of zoom noise is optimized.
2. Real-time processing while shooting video and a reduced number of operations for noise suppression
   As a result of reducing the number of operations to 80MIPS, processors are required to perform fewer operations and noise suppression takes place in real-time while shooting video. This specialized software is adopted on system LSI.

In order for conventional digital cameras to minimize noise levels while shooting video, such measures as expensive low noise level motors, motors with limited speed and filters that prevent the passage of strong motor noise frequencies were adopted. This gave rise to a number of problems that include a camera's lack of ability to take fast moving sports footage, and sound distortion due to filters that suppress ambient sound.

NEC's new technologies resolve these problems and have already been adopted by a popular commercial product.

Looking forward, NEC will continue to develop noise suppression technologies and to deploy them throughout the digital camera and video camera markets.
