During CES 2012 Fujifilm confirmed that they will be releasing their own adapter for attaching Leica M lenses to the X-Pro1 mirrorless camera. There is still no official word from Fuji yet, but the Leica M-Mount adapter for X-Mount cameras is currently listed at Adorama for $199.95. Some third party solutions for using Leica M lenses on the X-Pro1 have been available for months, like the Kipon L/M-FX adapter.

Update: Fujifilm just officially announced the adapter. The adapter can store lens profiles and trigger the correct framelines. Here is the press release and some more images:

Valhalla, N.Y., May 24, 2012 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced that it will release an M-Mount Adapter for the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 interchangeable lens digital camera system, specially made to enhance the experience of taking photos with the professional X-Pro1 digital camera. The all new M-Mount Adapter is designed to expand the lens selection of the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 interchangeable lens digital camera system, and give photographers a wide range of shooting capabilities.

“Since the introduction of the FUJIFILM X100, Fujifilm has made a commitment to expanding the functionality of the X-Series, and today we are very pleased to offer customers a premium accessory that they can truly be excited about – an M-Mount Adapter for the FUJIFILM X-Pro1,” said Go Miyazaki, division president, Imaging and Electronic Imaging Divisions, FUJIFILM North America Corporation. “We listened very carefully to our customers about their desire for an M- Mount for the FUJIFILM X-Pro1, and we are proud to announce that this accessory will be available soon for everyone.”

Precision Made M-Mount Adapter
Similar to the FUJIFILM X-Pro1’s exacting design standards, the precision made M-Mount Adapter is engineered to deliver superb results for discerning photographers.

The M-Mount Adapter is comprised of three parts: an aluminum mount for the body, a stainless steel mount for the lens, and an aluminum central tube. This construction enables an accurately-maintained distance of 27.8mm from the lens mount to sensor, which is crucial for delivering high quality and high resolution images.

The camera side of the M-Mount Adapter features an array of electronic connections that automatically pass information to the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 body based on pre-registered lens profiles. With firmware version 1.10 or later, this information is transmitted by pressing the Function button on the side of the adapter, which allows users to access the M-Mount Adapter Settings menu on the rear LCD.

While attached, the M-Mount Adapter still allows users to enjoy the benefits of the FUJIFILM X-Pro1’s extraordinary Hybrid Multi Viewfinder. The Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) and LCD monitor both offer a 100% field of view, and the Optical Viewfinder (OVF) displays a bright frame corresponding to the focal length in use.

M-Mount Adapter ProvidesUltimate Control
The FUJIFILM M-Mount Adapter provides ultimate control by allowing users to create and fine tune lens profiles through the X-Pro1’s Mount Adapter Settings menu. This menu allows X-Pro1 users to profile up to six lenses. There are four pre-sets for 21mm, 24mm, 28mm and 35mm lenses, plus two optional settings for additional optics.

With the Fujifilm M-Mount Adapter attached, profiles can be user-defined, based on distortion, peripheral illumination and color shading corrections.

Three levels of distortion correction are also available to combat barrel distortion on wide-angle lenses, and pincushion distortion on telephoto lenses. Users can select from Strong, Medium or Weak correction, or simply turn any correction off.

Peripheral illumination controls the amount of darkening at the four corners of an image. Eleven levels of correction can be applied from +5 to -5 (including “0”) with users given the choice of darkening the corners of the image to emphasise a central subject or lightening edges for more even illumination across the frame.

Finally, color shading correction allows each corner of the frame to be color corrected to combat any shift in color between the center and edges of the frame. Corrections can be made to red/cyan color shading and blue/yellow color shading from -9 to +9 relative to the green channel.FUJIFILM M-Mount Adapter key features

FUJIFILM Wide Conversion lens (WCL-X100)
The FUJIFILM WCL-X100, a wide conversion lens made in Japan and designed specifically for the award winning FUJIFILM X100, attaches directly onto the camera and increases picture taking versatility by multiplying the fixed focal length by 0.8x, converting it from 23mm (35mm equivalent) fixed focal length to a 19mm wide angle (28mm equivalent). The WCL-X100 delivers superb optical quality and maximizes versatility of the FUJIFILM X100 by ensuring comparable image quality even at the f/2 wide aperture setting, all while retaining all the original optical characteristics, including the attractive bokeh effect.

Using the WCL-X100
Achieving the very best results from the WCL-X100 is simple: select the ‘Wide Conversion Lens’ option in the FUJIFILM X100’s menu system (camera must be updated to firmware version 1.30 or later) or select the function via the Function (Fn) or RAW buttons.

VALHALLA, N.Y., May 1, 2012 – Today FUJIFILM North America Corporation announced that it will implement price increases for film and One-Time-Use cameras in the U.S., effective August 1st, 2012.

Prices for consumer and professional photographic film, including black and white, color negative, and color reversal films will increase by approximately 20%. Prices for consumer One-Time-Use cameras (OTUC) will increase by approximately 15%.

The price increases are a result of the continuing decline in demand for film products, the high costs of production, and the increased expenses associated with raw materials, including silver and petro-chemicals, and energy. Under such circumstances, and despite efforts to maintain production costs, Fujifilm is unable to absorb these costs entirely and must implement price increases at this time.

It seems that Fujifilm has fixed the "sensor blooming" issue in the X10 camera - dpreview received a new X10 version that did not show any of the previously reported problems. Last month Fujifilm promised new sensors for current X10 owners. If you care about DxOMark scores, the Finepix X10 got one of the highest scores for point and shoot cameras.

As previously reported, Fujifilm released firmware update v1.01 for the X-Pro1 mirrorless camera and lenses. Here is the list of changes:

1. Reduction of chattering noise from iris of lenses in shooting mode.
2. Improvement of phenomenon that parallax compensation does not work under condition of manual focus with OVF bright frame mode.
3. Improvement of phenomenon that OVF quality as low visibility due to too bright OVF under the condition of power save mode during pressing the shutter button halfway.
4. Improvement of phenomenon that delete function does not work after viewing continues shooting mode images.

Important: you must also update also the lens firmware for every single X-Pro1 lens that you own. Update the body firmware first, then the lenses. All firmware updates can found here.

The Vulcanised Fibreboard suitcase is handmade on original Victorian machinery at the Globe-Trotter factory in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. Vulcan Fibre was invented in Britain in the 1850s and is formed from 14 layers of specially bonded paper, coloured to specification. The brass rivets and locks and tan leather trim contribute to its luxury aesthetic. The case is finished with an embossed leather ‘Harrods Exclusively’ tag and brass plaque. Each case has handcrafted compartments to house the X-Pro1, the flash, filter and the camera’s three lenses and lens hoods: 18mm, 35mm and 60mm. The X-Pro1, the latest in X series range of Fujifilm cameras, is receiving phenomenal reviews for its image quality, versatility and cutting edge technology. Fujifilm issued a statement about the "white disc/sensor blooming" issue reported few months ago. In addition to the Finepix X10, the X-S1 camera is also impacted. A new firmware for the X-S1 will be released on March 21st. The second part of the statement is confusing - Fuji have developed a modified sensor that will resolve the issue and it will be available from late May 2012. Will all current Fuji X10 owners get their sensor replaced? Will the new sensor be included only in new X10 cameras?

The FUJIFILM X10 and X-S1 digital cameras were made available by Fujifilm late last year, and have been generally very well received by customers, who admire the excellent picture quality, manual zoom lens and viewfinder.

However, we did receive some inquiries concerning the so-called ‘white disc’ or ‘blooming’ occurrence, where exceptional highlights in the picture can appear as strongly delineated rounded shapes. This ‘blooming’ effect can occur with all digital cameras which use CMOS sensors, to varying degrees. It can also occur with the X10 and X-S1 when shooting in certain conditions, e.g. cars with front lights shining in dark night scene. The X10 and X-S1 are fitted with a very advanced sensor, which gives excellent picture quality and low noise, but which does give a different ‘blooming’ effect from other cameras.

Fujifilm has a long-standing history of delivering top quality products to the market. In response to our customers’ comments, we have worked hard to find an improvement to reduce the ‘blooming’ effect of the X10 and X-S1. Below are the actions we have undertaken.

1. In February, we announced a firmware upgrade for the X10 (version 1.03) which does reduce the white disc occurrence specifically in EXR mode. It works by identifying scenes that are likely to get ‘white disc’ blooming. When the camera recognizes such a scene, it automatically increases the ISO and optimizes DR (dynamic range). As the ISO increases, the white discs are less evident. * New firmware for the X-S1 will be available from March 21, 2012.
2. We will also develop a modified sensor, which will more universally resolve the ‘white disc’ blooming effect in all modes. We are working hard to make this new sensor available from late May 2012.

We encourage any customer with an X10 and X-S1 who has experienced the ‘white disc’ phenomenon to call their local authorized Fujifilm service centre.

The Kipon Leica M-mount lens adapter for Fujifilm X-Pro1 cameras is now available on eBay for $67.99. Few days ago Kipon announced a whole series of different lens adapters for the X-Pro1 mirrorless camera. Fujiilm will release their own adapter for Leica lenses later this year.

Kipon als has a Contax lens adapter for the X-Pro1.

Today the Chinese manufacturer Kipon announced that they will start selling their third party M-mount adapter for Fuji X-Pro1 cameras later this month (they will offer also Nikon and Contax versions). A DCHome forum member has posted several images (and samples) of the Kipon lens adapter. At the 2012 CES show Fujifilm confirmed that they will have their own M-mount adapter coming later in 2012.
