Does the Fuji X-Pro1 X-Trans CMOS sensor perform better than the Nikon D7000 and Canon 5D Mark II?

The Italian website dday posted an interesting slide about the performance of the X-Trans sensor inside the X-Pro1 mirrorless camera. The graph, provided by Fujifilm, shows that the X-Pro1 has better resolution and signal/noise ratio than the Nikon D7000 and performs even better than the full frame Canon EOS 5D Mark II (only in terms of resolution, not noise). The article contains also several high ISO samples from the X-Pro1.

Christian Fletcher published few samples taken with the Fuji X-Pro1 camera. The image above was taken at ISO 6400 (click on image for full resolution). Christian will be posting new images over the next few days, so bookmark his website.

I guess Fuji was serious when they said about the X-Pro1 that "resolution and low noise will surpass rival 35mm full size sensor".

The official X-Pro1 website doesn't include any sample images taken above ISO 1600.

Fuji X-Pro1 body listed in Japan for ¥135,000

The Fuji X-Pro1 is currently available for pre-order on Amazon Japan for ¥135,000, which is around $1,746. The Fuji X10 for example, is listed in Japan for ¥56,800 (around $734) and the US price is $599. By following this ratio, the US price of the X-Pro1 may actually be lower than $1699.95.

Fuji X-Pro1 will start shipping on February 18th in Japan, price still not confirmed

Fujifilm Japan officially announced the release date of the X-Pro1 mirrorless camera for the Japanese market: February 18th, 2012. New sample images taken with all three lenses have been uploaded to the X-Pro1 microsite.

Several online stores around the world have listed various prices for the new X-Pro1 products, but Fuji has not yet made an official statement. I already mentioned that the US MSRP will be very close (if not identical) to the already leaked prices on Amazon:

This week Kodak is suing Samsung

Last week Kodak filed a lawsuit against Fujifilm for patents infringement. This week it's Samsung's turn. Any guesses who is going to be sued next week? Here are both press releases - I have hyperlinked the related patents:

Kodak Alleges Patent Infringement Against Fujifilm

ROCHESTER, N.Y., January 13 -- Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against Fujifilm Corporation, alleging infringement of certain patents related to Kodak digital imaging technology.

The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, alleges that certain Fujifilm digital cameras infringe patented Kodak digital imaging technology.

“Kodak has long been in discussions with Fujifilm, asking the company to do what more than 30 other companies have done already and take a license for their use of our pioneering digital imaging technology,” said Timothy M. Lynch, Chief Intellectual Property Officer, Eastman Kodak Company. “Kodak has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in developing this technology.”

“Not only have we failed to reach an agreement, but Fuji resorted to filing suit against us in October in what was a thinly veiled attempt to redirect attention from their continued use of Kodak patented technology.There’s a basic issue of fairness that needs to be addressed. The failure to appropriately compensate Kodak for the unauthorized use of our patented technology impedes our ability to continue to innovate and introduce new products.”

Kodak has licensed its digital imaging patents to more than 30 leading technology companies, including LG, Motorola, Samsung and Nokia, with all of the licenses royalty-bearing to Kodak.

The complaint against Fuji alleges infringement of the following five patents:

Kodak Alleges Patent Infringement Against Samsung

Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., alleging infringement of certain patents related to Kodak digital imaging technology.

The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, alleges that certain Samsung tablets infringe patented Kodak digital imaging technology.

Kodak has licensed its digital imaging patents to more than 30 leading technology companies, including LG, Motorola, and Nokia, with all of the licenses royalty-bearing to Kodak.

The complaint against Samsung alleges infringement of the following five patents:

DxOMark: Fuji X10 vs. Nikon P7100 vs. Canon G12

Detailed Fuji X-Pro 1 camera hands-on report

I had a chance to get some more "hands-on" time with the Fuji X-Pro 1 camera at CES.

If you are a Fuji X100 user (like me), the first thing you will notice once you pick up the X-Pro 1 is the bigger LCD screen (3.0-inch RGBW LCD monitor, approx. 1,230,000 dots).

When I tried the autofocus of the X-Pro 1 the first day, I was not convinced that it's faster than then the X100. I went back to the Fuji booth the next day and did some side-by-side comparison with the X100 that was on display right next to the X-Pro 1. I am now convinced that the AF in the X-Pro 1 is faster, I was even able to focus in some tricky lighting conditions:

Fuji did not make any improvements to the manual focus in the X-Pro 1 - there is still not focus confirmation or "focus peaking" (like in the Sony NEX or Ricoh GXR systems), which could be problematic if you are planning on using the camera with Leica M-mount lenses.

The body of the X-Pro 1 is slightly bigger than the X100, the new X lenses are significantly bigger:

The Auto ISO selection is now added to the ISO menu. This is very useful when the ISO selection is assigned to the Fn button (the X100 did not include the Auto ISO option).

The X-Pro 1 has a new Q menu that allows quick access to the main camera settings - this worked pretty good, going trough the X100 menu to change a selection is painful:

Compared to the X100, Fujifilm also changed the menu navigation - the different functions are now grouped by multiple tabs for faster access:

Fuji did not make any changes to the video capabilities of the X-Pro 1, they remain unchanged from the X100 - you still get continuous AF during recording, without manual override (you can still change the aperture during video recording).

Fujifilm definitely took notes on the feedback from X100 users and addressed all issues in the X-Pro 1, except the video mode and manual focus - those are really my only two complaints for the X-Pro 1 so far (based on what I've seen at CES).

As I already mentioned, Fuji did confirm the upcoming Leica M-mount adapter.

There are a lot of online speculations regarding the price of the X-Pro 1. Fujifilm's rep at CES confirmed that the MSRP will be very close (if not identical) to the leaked prices on Amazon few days before the announcement:

European prices will probably be slightly higher.

In the US, the camera will start shipping at the end of February, 2012.

Fuji X-Pro1 coverage from CES

Fujifilm had several X-Pro 1 cameras on their booth at CES. I could not take any sample photos with those units, but they were fully operational. One of the representatives confirmed to me that the new X-Trans CMOS sensor is made by Fuji. Nobody could give me details on the pricing, but the general feedback was that it will be very close to Amazon's listings from few days ago. There will be no lens kits for sale, just body only (maybe this is only for the US). The M-mount adapter for the X-Pro 1 will be announced/introduced later in 2012.

Setting new standards in image resolution
Fujifilm has developed a new CMOS sensor called the X-Trans CMOS^TM. The X-Trans CMOS^TM sensor is capable of delivering resolution that is superior to other APS-C sensors and equal to even some full frame sensors.

The new color filter array paves the way for an ideal sensor that does not need an optical low-pass filter. While the optical low-pass filter is indispensable for the reduction of moiré and false color generated by conventional sensors, it also degrades resolution. Fujifilm has developed a new color filter array that is inspired by the random arrangement of fine film grain, removing the need for an optical low-pass filter to solve moiré and false color issues. In the array, RGB pixels are arranged in 6x6 pixel sets with high aperiodicity (randomness). Increasing the degree of randomness eliminates the fundamental cause of moiré and false colors – a problem that occurs in conventional arrays when shooting stripes and other repeating patterns. The presence of an R, G and B pixel in every vertical and horizontal pixel series minimizes the generation of false colors and delivers higher color reproduction.

As a result of using a film-inspired array, a more powerful processor is required to process the image signal data. So Fujifilm has developed the EXR Processor Pro. This technology will maximize the full potential of the X-Trans CMOS^TM sensor, delivering high speed and high precision image processing.

Prime FUJINON XF lenses deliver the highest image quality
FUJINON lenses have long been associated with delivering high quality images, with optics used for both broadcast TV and medium format cameras. Now the expertise borne out of this enviable optical heritage has been put into lenses for the FUJIFILM X-Pro1.

Three compact XF FUJINON fast aperture prime lenses will be available at launch. The “XF18mmF2 R” (27mm equivalent) f/2.0, “XF 35mmF1.4 R” (53mm equivalent) f/1.4, and “XF60mmF2.4 R Macro” (90mm equivalent) F/2.4 are all bright and compact and designed to deliver sharp, clear images of uncompromising quality. They offer precise control over depth-of-field and deliver excellent bokeh effects thanks to the design of the molded aperture diaphragm blades. The blades are curved to create a circular image at all aperture settings, while the very edges of each blade are meticulously rounded off rather than simply cut off, which delivers a sharper image. In addition, the solid feel of the high-quality metal barrel and detailed exposure setting in 1/3 step increments using the aperture ring fuel your desire to capture more photos with every shot.

FUJIFILM original “X-Mount” maximizes lens performance
Specifically designed to maximize the mirrorless design of the body the X-Mount has a short flange back distance of just 17.7mm. This means the rear lens elements are as close as possible to the sensor. The wide opening allows the lens to be mounted deeper within the body – up to 7.5mm (approximately) from the mount surface – reducing the back focus distance of each lens to the minimum possible, thus achieving high resolution all the way to the edge of the image.

Hybrid Multi Viewfinder – seeing is believing
First introduced in the FUJIFILM X100 digital camera, Fujifilm’s revolutionary Hybrid Viewfinder has the ability to instantly switch between an Optical Viewfinder and Electronic Viewfinder. The Hybrid Viewfinder has added a new dimension to the pleasure of composing photographs. For the brightest viewing image, and to keep shutter lag to a minimum, users should choose the Optical Viewfinder. Those wanting focus confirmation, exposure information, white balance information and depth of field indicators should switch to the Electronic Viewfinder.

The Electronic Viewfinder provides an excellent “Live View” of your composition. This fusion of technologies allows users to enjoy composing their images through a bright viewfinder, but has the option to overlay vital picture taking information should this be required.

Changing between the two viewfinders is simple, thanks to the switch on the front of the X-Pro1 body. When attaching a FUJINON XF-series lens on the X-Pro1, both the viewfinder magnification and bright frame size automatically switch to support the lens focal length. Viewfinder magnification switches to 0.37x for the 18mm lens, and to 0.60x when the 35mm or 60mm lens is mounted, letting you compose your shot with the bright, crystal clarity of an optical image. The X-Pro1 also gives you the freedom to manually set a focal distance and switch between viewfinder magnifications.

Cutting edge technology in a beautiful camera body
The X-Pro1’s magnesium alloy chassis and improved user interface is a testament to Fujifilm’s unyielding attention to quality and the photographic needs of the professionals. From the exact and deliberate placement of the buttons to the precision milled dials, the X-Pro1 beautifully encompasses all that is needed to deliver high quality photography. The top and base are made from die-cast aluminum alloy which, combined with high quality touches like precise engraving on the top-plate and hand-enameled lettering on the lenses, illustrates how the entire X-Pro1 system was designed and built without compromise.

This eye for detail extends to the shutter speed dial and exposure compensation control that is precision milled from solid metal. Details like the shutter speed dial lock mechanism and the recessed exposure compensation dial are designed to prevent accidental movement of settings. The knurled finish on the sides of the dials feature rows of minutely milled squared pyramids for superb grip and confidence.

As a well-known mark of quality, the “Made in Japan” printing confirms that every part of the construction has had to meet Fujifilm’s highest standards.

The lightweight, precision-milled lens hood (included with the lens) has been exclusively designed and machined from aluminum for the FUJINON XF lens. Its compact size delivers superb light shading performance in a design that perfectly matches X-Pro1 styling. Diameters of the aperture ring and focus ring of the three FUJINON XF-series interchangeable lenses are only slightly larger than the barrel for sleek uniformity of design. Precision machined from metal, the reassuring click of the aperture ring at each setting and the comfortable torque resistance when operating the focus ring enhances the shooting experience.

The X-Pro1’s leather-like finish is designed for a quality look and durability. The synthetic leather offers resistance to the elements and high durability, while an original manufacturing process produces a texture with the look and feel of authentic leather. The X-Pro1 has also been designed with the photographer’s comfort in mind. The natural fit of the eyepiece provides excellent shielding from light leakage, and an optional dioptic adjustment lens can also be attached.

Extending Fujifilm’s photo film legacy
In film cameras, capturing multiple exposures is the unique photographic technique of superimposing one image on another by double exposing a single frame of film. Through advanced digital processing the X-Pro1 can simulate this technique by simply selecting the Multiple Exposure mode and taking the first shot. By viewing the image via the Hybrid Multi Viewfinder or on the LCD screen, you can see how the finished multiple exposure will look and then precisely frame the second shot. Further enhancements have been made to the Film Simulation modes with the new Professional Color Negative Film Modes (Pro Neg. Std and Pro Neg. Hi) designed for X-Pro1 users working in the studio. The X-Pro1 also offers Film Simulation bracketing, along with AE, Dynamic and ISO bracketing; plus the ability to capture the colors and tonal qualities of popular FUJIFILM emulsions through the vibrant colors of Velvia, the softer skin tones of ASTIA and the natural look of PROVIA.

Replicating the effects of monochrome film photography the X-Pro1 lets you use color filters to expand your photographic interpretation. Heighten contrast with the yellow filter and red filter, or brighten greens and deepen reds with the green filter. Just as professional film photographers once selected a filter and printing paper to complement their creative vision, you can easily fine tune image quality with these filters. Fujifilm is proud to announce the new model changes the rules in the new interchangeable lens system: Fujifilm X-Pro1. This camera is aimed at a professional audience and advanced amateurs and incorporates advanced technologies such as Trans-X's unique sensor CMOSTM megapixel APS-C 16, a new X port for mounting the lens, a viewfinder and three hybrid optical the base.

X-Pro1 sets new standards in image resolution

For this camera, Fujifilm has developed a new CMOS sensor called X-TransTM CMOSTM which is able to provide a response similar to that of a sensor "full frame".
The new array (CFA - Color Filter Array) opens the way for an ideal sensor that does not require an optical low-pass filter. This filter is in fact essential for the reduction of false colors and moiré generated by conventional sensors, but at the same time, also degrades the resolution. Fujifilm has developed a new matrix that is inspired by the CFA random arrangement of the grain in the film, eliminating the need for optical low-pass filter to solve the problems of false colors and moiré. In the matrix, RGB pixels are arranged in groups of 6x6 pixels with high aperiodicity (randomness). Increasing the degree of randomness eliminates the root cause of the false color and moiré, a problem that occurs in conventional matrix elements during the filming of rows and other repeating patterns. The presence of a pixel R, G and B in each series of horizontal and vertical pixels minimizes the generation of false colors and provides superior color reproduction themselves.
The use of a matrix inspired by the film has necessitated a more powerful processor to process image data for this FUJIFILM EXR Processor Pro has created this project to optimize the potential of the Trans-X sensor CMOSTM providing high speed and high-precision image processing.

Fujinon XF for the best image quality

The Fujinon lenses used for television broadcasts and medium format cameras, have always been associated with high image quality. All the experience in the design of the optics has been used in the study phase of the objectives dedicated to X-Pro1.
The targets are launched with the machine, and three are part of the new XF series Fujinon: "XF 18mm F2 R", "XF 35mm F1, 4 R" and "R XF 60mm F2 Macro 4". These objectives are compact, very bright and offer precise control over depth of field effect and the possibility out-of-focus bokeh thanks to the design of the curved blades of the diaphragm. The slats are curved to create a circular image at all apertures, while the edges of each blade is carefully rounded for a sharper image.
The feeling of solidity and the precise mechanics of optics will satisfy the desire of photographers to capture multiple images with every shot.

FUJIFILM Attack "X-Mount" to maximize performance

Designed specifically to maximize the design "mirrorless" of the body, X-mount flange has a short distance posterior to the sensor plane, equal to only 17.7 mm. This means that the rear lens as close as possible to the sensor. The wide opening allows you to attach the lens deeper inside the body - up to about 7.5 mm from the mounting surface - minimizing the distance of "back focus" of each lens for high resolution to the edge of the image.

Hybrid Multi Viewfinder

FUJIFILM's revolutionary hybrid viewfinder appeared first in the X100. With its ability to instantly switch between optical viewfinder and an electronic viewfinder, the viewfinder hybrid has added a new dimension to the pleasure of composing photographs.
The user may choose to use, depending on your mood or need, depending on the optical viewfinder for a picture as real as possible and have all the information electronically in real time.
