Samsung NX20 announcement next month?

I received a tip that the release date for the Samsung NX20 mirrorless camera will be in the second half of February, 2012. The camera will start shipping in April (for Asia) and May (for Europe/US). Samsung will also announce new NX lenses, flash unit and filters.

This week Kodak is suing Samsung

Last week Kodak filed a lawsuit against Fujifilm for patents infringement. This week it's Samsung's turn. Any guesses who is going to be sued next week? Here are both press releases - I have hyperlinked the related patents:

Kodak Alleges Patent Infringement Against Fujifilm

ROCHESTER, N.Y., January 13 -- Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against Fujifilm Corporation, alleging infringement of certain patents related to Kodak digital imaging technology.

The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, alleges that certain Fujifilm digital cameras infringe patented Kodak digital imaging technology.

“Kodak has long been in discussions with Fujifilm, asking the company to do what more than 30 other companies have done already and take a license for their use of our pioneering digital imaging technology,” said Timothy M. Lynch, Chief Intellectual Property Officer, Eastman Kodak Company. “Kodak has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in developing this technology.”

“Not only have we failed to reach an agreement, but Fuji resorted to filing suit against us in October in what was a thinly veiled attempt to redirect attention from their continued use of Kodak patented technology.There’s a basic issue of fairness that needs to be addressed. The failure to appropriately compensate Kodak for the unauthorized use of our patented technology impedes our ability to continue to innovate and introduce new products.”

Kodak has licensed its digital imaging patents to more than 30 leading technology companies, including LG, Motorola, Samsung and Nokia, with all of the licenses royalty-bearing to Kodak.

The complaint against Fuji alleges infringement of the following five patents:

U.S. Patent No. 5,493,335 (“Single Sensor Color Camera With User Selectable Image Record Size”)
U.S. Patent No. 6,292,218 (“Electronic Camera For Initiating Capture of Still Images While Previewing Motion Images”)
U.S. Patent No. 6,573,927 (“Electronic Still Camera For Capturing Digital Image and Creating a Print Order”)
U.S. Patent No. 6,441,854 (“Electronic Camera With Quick Review of Last Captured Image”)
U.S. Patent No. 5,164,831 ( “Electronic Still Camera Providing Multi-Format Storage of Full and Reduced Resolution Images”)

Kodak Alleges Patent Infringement Against Samsung

ROCHESTER, N.Y., January 18 --
Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., alleging infringement of certain patents related to Kodak digital imaging technology.

The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, alleges that certain Samsung tablets infringe patented Kodak digital imaging technology.

Kodak has licensed its digital imaging patents to more than 30 leading technology companies, including LG, Motorola, and Nokia, with all of the licenses royalty-bearing to Kodak.

The complaint against Samsung alleges infringement of the following five patents:

U.S. Patent No. 6,292,218 – “Electronic Camera For Initiating Capture of Still Images While Previewing Motion Images”
U.S. Patent No. 7,210,161 – “Automatically Transmitting Images from an Electronic Camera to a Service Provider Using a Network Configuration File”
U.S. Patent No. 7,742,084 – “Network Configuration File for Automatically Transmitting Images from an Electronic Still Camera”
U.S. Patent No. 7,453,605 – “Capturing Digital Images to be Transferred to an E-Mail Address”
U.S. Patent No. 7,936,391 – “Digital Camera with Communications Interface for Selectively Transmitting Images over a Cellular Phone Network and a Wireless LAN Network to a Destination”

Samsung NX200 RS “retro” version to be announced this weekend

Samsung is expected to release the NX200 RS camera for the South Korean market this Saturday. The specs will be identical to the NX200 model ($899). The new camera will feature a silver top plate that is suppose to give it a "retro look".

Samsung at CES

Samsung did not announce the previously rumored NX20 or the TL-500/EX1 replacement at CES. The company however did confirm to AP that they are working on a high-end compact system camera (NX1?). The Vice President of Digital Imaging also confirmed the upcoming replacement of the EX1 model. Samsung also made some headlines that it may consider an alliance with Olympus who will be selling newly issued stock to cover their financial losses.

Other cameras to be announced at PMA@CES 2012

Here are some more leaked cameras that are going to be announced at PMA show next week:

Samsung: six new cameras WB850F ($349) with 16MP BSI CMOS sensor, 21x optical zoom, 3-inch AMOLED screen, 1080/30p FullHD video and GPS. The DV500F model will have dual screens ($299). No word about the NX-20.
Casio will introduce the Exilim EX-ZR200 ($380 suggested retail) with 16.1MP, 12.5x optical zoom (24-300mm), up to 30 fps, FullHD video, HDR and more.
New GE cameras - not worth mentioning.
Kodak: new EasyShare M750 ($170) with 16MP, 5x zoom plus Wi-Fi.
Olympus will announce 5 new digital cameras: SP-620UZ ($199) with 21x zoom, 7 fps, HD video. The SZ-12 ($199) will have 24x zoom, 7 fps, HD video, 3D capabilities. The TG-320 ($179.99) will be the new Tough line addition.
Panasonic will also announce 5 new cameras: Lumix SZ-7 and SZ1 will both have 10x optical zooms with Leica lenses. The DMC-SZ7 will have 14.1MP and FullHD recording. The DMC-SZ1 will have 16.1MP and 720p HD video recording capabilities.
Vivitar will also announce new point and shoot cameras. Their top of the line model iTwist F129 ($90) will have 14.1MP, 4x zoom, 2.7-inch rotating LCD screen, 720p HD video recording.

What to expect during PMA @CES 2012 next week?

What to expect at PMA 2012 show next week?

Nikon will introduce their top of the line D4 + a new Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G lens.
Canon will probably announce new lenses and maybe a DSLR + compact(s).
Sony will show only few new Cybershot point and shoot cameras.
Panasonic may announce a new Lumix GH3 camera and will probably have their upcoming Lumix X lenses on display.
Fujifilm will have their new mirrorless interchangeable lens camera on display (see the latest leaked picture). The official announcement will probably happen in February 2012.
Samsung already announced one new compact camera. Expected is also a TL500/EX1 replacement and the mirrorless interchangeable Samsung NX20 camera. There could be a surprise from Samsung - they may introduce a second NX camera.
Update: Sigma will probably announce new mirrorless lenses.

Nikon and Fujifilm will basically steal the show this year. Olympus and Pentax/Ricoh also have new cameras scheduled for 2012 release (K-r is discontinued), but I don't think they will show anything new at PMA.

Sony, Samsung, Fujifilm and Panasonic have press conference scheduled for January 8th.

Samsung to announce TL500/EX1 camera replacement at PMA 2012

The current Samsung TL500/EX1 model

Samsung is going to announce a replacement for their TL500/EX1 high-end compact camera (price: $348.88, see review) at PMA 2012 which starts on January 9th, 2012 in Las Vegas. The new camera is rumored to have an EVF and a new, bigger CMOS sensor.

At PMA 2012, Samsung is also expected to announced their new NX20 interchangeable lens camera.

Samsung NX200 now shipping in the US

The Samsung NX200 is now shipping in the US and is currently in stock at B&H. The camera was announced on September 1st.

Update: B&H is sold out, currently Adorama has the NX200 in stock. The new Samsung 85mm f1.4 ED SSA iFunction NX lens is also now in stock.

Samsung NX1, NX20 listings briefly showed up on support site

Samsung's Global Download Centre had listing for the unreleased NX20 and NX1 cameras. Those model names are now removed. The Samsung NX1 is expected to be announced in 2012 and will probably be the top of the line NX camera. Few months ago there were rumors about a new prototype camera called R1 with the following specs:

APS C size sensor
24.3 mega pixels
Interchangeable lenses
Mirrorless system
Magnesium alloy body
Retro Styling (their words) i.e. direct access buttons and dials for controls, similar look to Fuji x100, black and chrome
10 fps
Max shutter speed 1/8000 sec
Phase autofocus
Swivel LCD screen (although this didn’t get good feedback)
Price £616 including kit lens

The Samsung NX20 is expected to be announced at CES 2012. The new camera is rumored to have electronic shutter.

There were even some speculations that Samsung may be working a medium format digital camera.

This is the Samsung NX 12-24mm f/4 lens

The circled lens on the picture above is the actual prototype of the upcoming Samsung NX 12-24mm f/4 lens that is listed on the Samsung NX 2012 roadmap. The final version will have ED glass and a new VCM (Voice Coil Motor) specially designed for video recording. The lens is expected to be released in the first half of 2012.

Samsung NX lens roadmap for 2012: five new lenses, NX20 and NX1

This is the Samsung NX lens roadmap for 2012. Five new lenses are listed, two for the first half and three for the second half of 2012:

55mm f/1.8 iFn pancake
12-24mm f/4 ED iFn VCM (Voice Coil Motor)
80-400mm f/4-5.6 OIS SSA iFn
135mm f/2 OIS SSA iFn
24mm f/1.8 ED SSA iFn

Only the 12-24mm and 55mm pancake are ready to be released. The NX20 will be totally different then the NX10. Samsung is also working on a NX1 model (is this the Samsung NX1?).

The 2012 roadmap will be officially announced in January, 2012 (probably at CES).

Rumor: Samsung is implementing an electronic shutter in their sensor

Samsung is rumored to be implementing an electronic shutter mode in a new APS-C batch production. It is not clear yet if it is for NX200 or it is a completely new sensor for the upcoming NX20.

High speed rolling shutter technology is already implemented in the new 20.3MPx APS-C sensor on the NX200, but electronic shutter mode is not activated on it.

According to Amazon UK, the Samsung NX200 mirrorless camera will be released on October 1st, 2011. B&H is currently taking pre-orders which is another indication that the camera will start shipping soon. The NX200 was announced on September 1st.

What is Samsung R1?

Is this the Samsung R1?

36exp is a "group of professional photographers who actively work in our fields of expertise". Few hours ago the owner of that website went to several online forums and posted this:

"Last night I attended a market research session on a new camera design, they showed a mock up and spec of a new camera with a dSLR like spec and 24MP APS C size sensor, in a small retro body, with interchangeable lenses"

There was also a link to a post on 36exp that was removed shortly after it went viral. Unfortunately, Google cache did not capture the post, but Mirrorlessrumors was able to obtain the original text:

"Last night I attended a feedback session run by a research company on behalf of a major camera company. They were looking for ‘advanced camera users’ to give feedback on a new camera design.
They showed what looked like a very well progressed mock up and spec of a camera, which was about the size of a Canon G12, or mirrorless camera, but had styling very similar to the Fuji X100.
The spec of the camera that we were asked to give feedback on was given as:
- APS C size sensor
– 24.3 mega pixels
– Interchangeable lenses
– Mirrorless system
– Magnesium alloy body
– Retro Styling (their words) i.e. direct access buttons and dials for controls, similar look to Fuji x100, black and chrome
– 10 fps
– Max shutter speed 1/8000 sec
– Phase autofocus
– Swivel LCD screen (although this didn’t get good feedback)

They didn’t reveal it as Samsung initially, but the discussion got onto which brands we trusted and everyone mentioned Nikon, Canon, Leica etc as brands with heritage that they would trust if buying into what seemed to be a premium camera. When someone mentioned that they would be less likely to buy it if it was from Samsung a guy appeared (who been observing the session from behind one way glass) and announced that it was a Samsung camera, and asked our thoughts on this….
Couldn’t get any pictures or bring anything out unfortunately. It may be called the Retro R1 or similar as the mock up had Retro etched on it, but tape over the rest of the name.
I really liked it, seemed to have SLR spec in a smaller body, hopefully it comes to fruition."

Few months ago several Samsung camera prototypes appeared on a promotional video and one of them indeed had a retro design. In addition, I recently received some rumors that Samsung may show a second NX camera at CES 2012 in addition to the NX20.

Samsung NX20 to be announced at CES 2012 (January)

Samsung NX11 system camera

The Samsung NX20 will be an advanced upgrade of NX10/11 model that will have a new design and improved performance. The new NX model will have an EVF. The camera will be announced at CES 2012 which will take place in Las Vegas from January 10-13, 2012. The 16-80mm zoom lens will also be presented and will probably be the NX20 kit lens.

In 2012 Samsung will announce several new NX lenses, at least one of them will be a pancake. Samsung is also working on two more APS-C sensor, one of them is suppose to be customized for video (probably new or improved processor with the same 20MP sensor).

The most interesting rumor I received is that Samsung may announce a second NX camera at CES 2012 but I have no further details at that point.
