Samsung NX20 now shipping in the US

The new Samsung NX20 mirrorless camera is now shipping in the US and is currently in stock at Adorama. Unlike many of the recently announced cameras, there won't be any shortages of the NX20.

Samsung updates

Samsung published a press release this week to announced the US pricing for their latest NX mirrorless cameras - not sure what they had in mind since the prices have been available from the day of announcement:

Samsung NX20: $1,099.99
Samsung NX210: $899
NX1000: $699 (also available in white)

Engadget and The Verge recently posted hands-on review for the new Samsung NX cameras.

After talking to Samsung's Senior Vice President of Mobile Entertainment, Engadget now reports that the company will continue the developing and manufacturing of point and shoot cameras. A week ago the WSJ reported that "low-end compact camera offerings will gradually be reduced, as we are now concentrating on the mirrorless segment".

Samsung to slowly abandon point and shoot cameras and concentrate on mirrorless

Samsung reminded us again that they want to become "the biggest mirrorless camera vendor by 2015 with a more than twenty-percent market share". In order to achieve that, the company will be slowly phasing out its point and shoot cameras production and concentrate entirely on mirrorless solutions: "low-end compact camera offerings will gradually be reduced, as we are now concentrating on the mirrorless segment" according to the WSJ.

Samsung recently announced three new mirrorless NX cameras and is planning to announce more mirrorless products during Photokina 2012.

Samsung at Photokina: two new NX lenses, a new flash and a mic

At the Photokina 2012 show that will take place in Germany in September, Samsung is expected to announce two new NX lenses, a new flash and an external mic that have already been shown at CES 2012 (see picture above). One of the new lenses could be the 16-80mm.

Samsung had the following lenses on their 2012 roadmap:

After the NX20 pictures, here are few freshly leaked images of the upcoming Samsung NX1000 mirrorless camera (click on images for larger view). The NX1000 will have 20.3MP sensor, built-in WiFi and will probably be priced cheaper then the NX20. The camera is expected to start shipping in May.

Samsung NX20 and NX210 updates

The above image was taken with the upcoming Samsung NX210 camera. I had to strip the EXIF data in order to protect my source, but here is a screenshot of the main parameters:

The Samsung NX210 will be very similar to the current NX200 model ($899) but with built-in WiFi.

A quick update on the NX20 specs: the camera will have an electronic 1st curtain shutter; the maximum shutter speed will be 1/8000 (and not 1/6000 as initially reported); the new EVF should be very similar in performance to the one used in the Sony NEX 7 camera - this is why the NX20 camera was delayed: Samsung wanted to improve their new EVF after the NEX 7 was announced.

Samsung is expected to announce four new mirrorless cameras in 2012: NX20, NX210, NX1000 and potentially a fourth model that could be called NX300 or NX1.

Samsung could be next to release an Android based digital camera

After Polaroid, Samsung could be the next manufacturer to release an Android based digital camera. They already filed a patent for a Samsung Galaxy camera. Engadget was recently at Samsung's Korean headquarters and reported that the company is considering an "open" camera operating system:

"One interesting bit of discussion: Samsung is considering an "open" camera operating system. It's still early days and nothing is confirmed but, given the company's support for Android on other platforms, that OS would be a logical choice. What we know is that Samsung R&D has been researching bringing Android to its digital cameras -- a move that would be far from shocking, considering that development teams do tend to collaborate, and the company clearly has experience with the Google OS. And while there are likely to be such open OS prototypes buried deep within Sammy HQ, they're mere experiments at this point -- at least from a production perspective."

In addition to the Samsung NX20, NX210 and NX1000, there is now talk about a fourth mirrorless camera called NX-300 that will have the same design as the NX-20 but without the EVF. The NX-300 is expected to be released in July, 2012 - this is according to a dpreview forum member who back in June of 2011 posted about the upcoming NX200 camera few months before the official announcement. Here are the details:

Samsung NX210 will be the same as the NX200 but with added Wi-Fi capabilities, available in April 2012.

Samsung NX20, available in May 2012. The NX20 has a retro Konica IIIa design with 1.8M EVF, manual control and swivel AMOLED display. It has the same NX-200 sensor but with a better processor and buffer. The retail price for NX-20 body only is $950. There will be two new lenses, the 16-80mm and 12-24mm and a new flash.

Samsung NX1000 will be a cheaper NX model, available in May, 2012.

NX-300 has the same NX-20 design but without EVF. It will be released in July, 2012.

I also received some tips that Samsung is preparing a new APS-C 32MP CMOS sensor for the NX system with RGB-W aleatory pattern, no low pass filter, a new gapless microlenses array with edges optimization and a new on-chip noise reduction architecture.

The Samsung NX20 could be announced in the next few days - there is a Samsung event in Prague this week. The NX20 is rumored to have the same sensor as the NX200, 10 fps, dual-core processor, EVF and AMOLED swivel display, priced around $1000. Two new lenses (12-24mm and 16-80mm) are expected to be announced together with the NX20.

Panasonic and Samsung also interested in Olympus

Reuters reports that in addition to Sony and Fujifilm, Panasonic and Samsung have also "decided to propose capital ties with disgraced medical equipment maker Olympus Corp". Both companies declined to comment on this report. Olympus will make a decision for their future strategic partner after a new management team is chosen on the shareholder meeting that will take place on April 20th, 2012
