Sony today announced the rumored 24mm f/2 lens and two more primes: 35mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/2.8 for the Alpha mount. This announcement comes a day after several websites (see here and here) reported the rumor that Sony may stop producing full frame sensors. What’s next from Sony? I expect an indirect response (maybe in an interview) stating that they are committed to the full frame format and will continue to produce full frame cameras and lenses (now if those will have a Sony sensor inside is a different story).

Full press release on the three new lenses after the break:

Sony is expanding its already strong line-up of over 30 A-mount lenses with new models that will appeal to seasoned photographers and those new to DSLR cameras alike

The Distagon T* 24mm F2 ZA SSM (SAL24F20Z) features the acclaimed Carl Zeiss Distagon design and rounds out the existing Planar (SAL85F14Z) and Sonnar (SAL135F18Z) models also developed in conjunction with Carl Zeiss. It is intended to appeal to experienced photographers looking for a large-aperture wide-angle lens of real distinction.

The DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (SAL35F18) adds the important 35mm focal length to the ‘Easy Choice’ series. ‘Easy Choice’ is intended to provide great value, compact and lightweight lenses that are attractive to entry-level and advanced photographers alike. Each lens in the series is selected for a specific purpose, for example portraiture or macro.

The 85mm F2.8 SAM (SAL85F28) is another ‘Easy Choice’ lens, this time offering the 85mm focal length considered the standard for portraiture because of the natural perspective it provides. True to type it is extremely compact and light, weighing just 175g.

The Distagon T* 24mm F2 SSM (SAL24F20Z)
The Distagon T* 24mm F2 SSM (SAL24F20Z) functions as a wide-angle 24mm lens on full-frame cameras with 35mm sensors, or as a 36mm equivalent lens ideal for general use on cameras with APS-C sensors. Jointly developed with Carl Zeiss, it features the highly-regarded Carl Zeiss Distagon retro-focus lens configuration designed for wide-angle lenses.

This lens is distinguished by its fast response focus and extremely quiet, very smooth operation thanks to its built-in SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor).

It offers a wide and therefore highly versatile focal range from 0.19m to infinity, and features a nine-blade circular aperture that along with the large F2 maximum aperture contributes to smooth, natural bokeh effects.

In keeping with traditional Carl Zeiss design, the all-metal lens barrel has been finished to a very high standard resulting in a visibly high-quality appearance.

The DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (SAL35F18)
Part of the ‘Easy Choice’ series, offering photographers at all levels great value, compact and lightweight lenses, the DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (SAL35F18) weighs just 170g. It can be added to a lens kit system and carried without noticeably increasing the weight of the bag.

With an approximately 50mm (35mm equivalent) focal length on an APS-C sensor, this lens is ideal for snapshots and portraits under a wide range of shooting conditions. The high-speed F1.8 maximum aperture is particularly advantageous for hand held shooting in low light.

At just 0.23 metres, the DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (SAL35F18) has the shortest minimum focus in its class, making it an excellent choice for dramatic close-ups too. Whatever the shot, the internal Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) drives the focussing group directly and ensures responsive and fluid autofocus operation.

The 85mm F2.8 SAM (SAL85F28)
This is the first full-frame lens in the ‘Easy Choice’ range, so its launch represents an important development of the line-up as a whole. The 85mm focal length is a standard for portraiture because of the natural perspective that it provides. On an APS-C sensor camera the 85mm F2.8 SAM (SAL85F28) functions as a 127.5mm (35mm equivalent) telephoto lens – and features a Sonnar-type optical design that is considered ideal for mid-range telephoto lenses.

The lens is sharp center to corner, and features smooth defocusing thanks to its large F2.8 maximum aperture and circular aperture design. At 0.6 metres, the minimum focusing distance is the shortest in its class, and SAM motor technology ensures smooth autofocus operation.

The quality optical and mechanical features of the lens mean it is suitable for serious photography and should more than satisfy intermediate to advanced users.

CAMCORDER REDEFINED: SONY DEBUTS WORLD’S FIRST CONSUMER INTERCHANGEABLE LENS HD CAMCORDER

SAN DIEGO, June 13, 2010 – Following the 25th anniversary of its industry-leading Handycam® product line, Sony today announced the innovative NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Camcorder.
The new NEX-VG10 is the world’s first consumer camcorder with interchangeable lenses and the first Handycam camcorder to feature an extra-large Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor.

“The NEX-VG10 takes Sony’s Handycam line to the next level by allowing unprecedented artistic expression that isn’t possible with conventional consumer video cameras,” said Andy Bubala, director of Sony’s camcorder business. “With this camcorder, video enthusiasts and photographers can now capture cinematic full HD movies and premium stereo sound.”

Sony’s NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Handycam® Camcorder is equipped with the same Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor used in the “NEX-5″ and “NEX-3″ digital cameras and compatible with the high grade “E-mount” series of smaller, lighter lenses optimized for video shooting with silent operation and AF. It is also compatible with a wealth of “A-mount” interchangeable lenses used by Sony’s existing α DSLR camera lineup via a mount adapter (sold separately), including award winning Sony G Lenses and Carl Zeiss® branded lenses.

Coupled with Sony’s powerful BIONZ® processor, the camcorder’s Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor realizes high resolution video and 14 megapixel still images. Approximately 19.5 times bigger than the standard sensor found in conventional camcorders, the APS HD CMOS sensor enables an extremely shallow depth of field. This allows videographers to achieve cinematic results with stunning background defocus (bokeh). Users can also enjoy DSLR-quality photo capture with features like Auto HDR, Handheld Twilight, and Anti Motion Blur, as well as catch fast action sequences with a continuous burst rate of up to seven fps.

The NEX-VG10 can capture full 1920×1080 high definition video at up to 24Mbps for amazing clarity and detail, ideal for recording on to Blu-ray Disc™ media. It also comes with an E-mount 18-200mm lens optimized for video shooting that offers a powerful 11x optical zoom in addition to a silent auto-focus system and Optical Steadyshot™ image stabilization with Active Mode for superior versatility.

Satisfying the needs of serious videographers, sound quality matches the stellar imaging performance of the NEX-VG10. Its Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone uses advanced processing algorithms to combine signals from four individual microphone capsules. The result is exceptionally clear stereo audio with high directional response, allowing videographers to capture more sound from their subject and less background noise. The camcorder also features dedicated inputs for optional external microphones and headphones to monitor sound levels.

The camcorder’s TruBlack™ technology brings remarkably higher contrast and brightness to its 3.0″ Xtra Fine LCD™ swivel display, delivering more natural, realistic colors and easier viewing in bright conditions. The LCD is supplemented by a high-resolution adjustable electronic viewfinder that helps framing, monitoring and capturing clear images.

Compact and easy to handle, the NEX-VG10 gives videographers the flexibility of a removable lens with the ergonomics and operability of a Handycam camcorder. An intuitive jog dial and hotkeys make it easy to navigate menus and adjust shooting parameters, including full manual control of Iris, Shutter Speed, Gain and White Balance for professional results.

Dual accessory shoes (Alpha Hot Shoe/Universal Cold Shoe) allow for many still photography and video accessories, such as the ECM-CG50 shotgun microphone and external flash lighting. There’s also a choice of rechargeable battery options, including the NP-FV100 that provides up to 315 minutes of continuous HD shooting (may vary), and a specially designed soft carrying case.
Included with purchase as a download voucher ($99 value), Sony Vegas® Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 video editing software includes powerful tools for video compositing, color correction and sound mixing to produce cinema-quality HD movies with ease. You can also share your creations via DVD, Blu-ray Disc™ media, or upload to the web – all from one simple program.

The NEX-VG10 accepts both Memory Stick PRO Duo™ (including Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™) and SD (including both SDHC and SDXC formats) media. Users can record up to four hours of high definition footage (1920×1080, FH mode) when using the 32GB memory card.

Sony’s Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX offers an industry leading 30MB per second transfer rate, which means Handycam users can upload video clips in a fraction of actual playback time.

Price and Availability
The NEX-VG10 will be available in September for about $2,000 and presales on www.sonystyle.com will begin July 14. They will also be available at Sony Style® retail stores and at authorized dealers nationwide.

SMILE AND SAY 3D: SONY INTRODUCES WORLD’S SMALLEST 3D DIGITAL STILL CAMERAS
Models Offer Superior Auto Mode, Background Defocus, Low-Light Performance and AVCHD Video

SAN DIEGO, July 7, 2010 – Sony today unveiled two new Cyber-shot® digital still cameras (models DSC-TX9 and DSC-WX5) that are the world’s smallest 3D cameras, capturing 3D images with a single lens system using a sweeping motion.
“Sony is focused on being the leader in 3D technology, leveraging its expertise to create the best 3D products, content and unique entertainment experiences,” said Kelly Davis, director of the digital imaging business at Sony Electronics. “Sony is making it easy to create personal 3D content that can be enjoyed with friends or family on compatible 3D television systems.”

Full press release after the break:

Create Your Own 3D Panoramas
Both models offer a 3D Sweep Panorama™ feature, which lets you take panoramic pictures in one press-and-sweep motion. The high-speed burst of frames is stitched together using innovative processing techniques to automatically create detail-packed 3D panoramas. These images can be enjoyed in 2D or stunning 3D on compatible 3D televisions (3D-compatible HDMI cables and 3D glasses are also required and are sold separately.)
The DSC-TX9, which has a 3.5-inch 921k resolution LCD touchscreen, and the DSC-WX5, which has a 2.8-inch LCD screen, also let you view images in a whole new way. Unlike 3D Sweep Panorama mode, which lets you view your 3D images on compatible 3D television systems, Sweep Multi Angle™ lets you view images moving in simulated 3D right on the cameras’ LCD screen by tilting the camera back and forth. This new shooting feature captures 15 images at different angles and then compiles them into one photo, creating a 3D-like effect on the display.

In addition to Sweep Multi Angle, the 12.2 megapixel TX9 and WX5 models offer new features including Background Defocus, which simulates depth of field control and Superior Auto mode, which provides low image-noise levels previously only available from DSLR cameras.

Superior Quality, DSLR-Like Artistic Photos
Superior Auto mode also makes it easier to get cleaner, sharper more dynamic pictures and fewer missed shots. An extension of Intelligent Auto mode, the Superior Auto feature takes multiple shots to reduce image noise and extend dynamic range. The cameras automatically recognize the correct scene, then quickly shoot and when needed, combine up to six shots to produce images of greater quality than possible with a single shot.
Superior Auto is the world’s first auto mode that utilizes multiple shots. While there are other cameras with multi-shot technology, only Sony cameras know when to take multiple shots automatically. Only Superior Auto can evaluate the scene and automatically engage multi-shot technology to get the best shot.
The Background Defocus mode, featured in the TX9 and WX5 models, provides artistic photos like those taken with a DSLR by making it easy to blur the image’s background, putting the emphasis on your subject and creating a bokeh effect. The camera takes two shots, identifies the background and applies a defocus effect keeping your subject crisp and clear in the foreground.

The Natural Flash feature also improves image quality and captures colors the way the eye sees them. This feature takes a reference shot without flash and then uses that as a color reference correction, resulting in more lifelike images.
These cameras also help you focus on moving subjects. By selecting your subject on the LCD screen, the camera will keep focus even as the subject moves closer or farther away. Another new feature, Soft Skin mode, recognizes skin tones and reduces the appearance of imperfections without affecting the rest of the shot. With Sony’s “Exmor R” back-illuminated CMOS sensor technology, the new cameras provide excellent low-light performance and 10fps burst shooting.

Full HD Video
With the AVCHD format, used in Sony’s high-definition Handycam® camcorders, the models can record movies in 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolutions in 60i at up to 17Mbps for smooth movement during playback. They can also capture videos in the MP4 format (up to 1440 x1080 30p 12Mbps) for online sharing.
In addition to its AVCHD video capability, the TX9 and WX5 cameras have Optical SteadyShot® image stabilization, helping overcome camera shake.
With a Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® 4x zoom lens, the compact TX9 camera lets you focus as little as 0.4 inches from your subject for extraordinary close-up shots. The 4x (25-100mm) wide-angle lens is perfect for capturing a wider view of your subject at closer distances.
The WX5 camera is an ideal choice for DSLR owners who also want to carry a compact, high-performance point-and-shoot camera. With a Sony G lens (5x 24-120mm), the WX5 camera can capture an unusually wide range for its compact size and features a wide aperture (F2.4), enhancing low-light performance.
Sony also introduced today the 14.1 megapixel DSC-T99 camera—an affordable T-series Cyber-shot model that will be available for about $250. With a CCD image sensor, the camera offers Sweep Panorama® mode, a 3-inch touch screen and a 25mm-wide Carl Zeiss® lens.
To give customers greater choice and enhance the overall customer experience, the TX9, T99 and WX5 cameras feature a memory card slot compatible with both Memory Stick PRO Duo™ and class 4 and above SD/SDHC formats.

Pricing and Availability
The cameras and a range of accessories will be available in September online at Sonystyle.com, at Sony Style® retail stores (www.Sonystyle.com/retail), at military base exchanges and at authorized dealers nationwide.
• The TX9 will be available for about $400 in (dark gray and red)
• The T99 will be available for about $250 in (silver, black, pink, green and violet)
• The WX5 will be available for about $300 in (silver and black)

Today Sony announced the long rumored α290 and α390 DSLR cameras – both are considered entry level with 14.2MP sensors and no video. Full press release and detailed specs comparison after the break:

DSLR-A390 with 14.2 megapixels, Quick AF Live View and 6.7cm (2.7-inch) tilt LCD; DSLR-A290 with 14.2 megapixels
Compact, stylish body with new grip design and revised button layout for comfortable handling
Quick AF Live View with tilt LCD (α390) for live image preview with fast, accurate autofocus
Friendly on-screen Help Guide and Graphic Display
HDMI output and BRAVIA Sync
Sony adds two new stylish, affordable entry-level cameras to the α (alpha) Digital SLR range.

Ideal for first-time DSLR users, the DSLR-A390 (α390) and DSLR-A290 (α290) offer a dramatic step up in picture quality and creative options from point-and-shoot compact cameras. Just as importantly, they’re incredibly easy to use, even if you’ve never handled a DSLR before.

With a resolution of 14.2 effective megapixels for flawless, low-noise images, both cameras offer the speedy shooting responses that are prized by DSLR users. The α390 adds the extra benefit of Quick AF Live View. This unique system teams the convenience of live image preview on the tilt-angle Clear Photo LCD with speedy, accurate phase-detection autofocus.

The most affordable new DSLR from Sony, the α290 offers the same 14.2 effective megapixel resolution as the α390 in a compact body that weighs just 456g (excluding battery and media).

Both cameras feature a sturdy new grip design that allows even more comfortable handling. The upper control area of both models has also been revised with a clear, uncluttered new button layout.

Even DSLR novices will find it brilliantly simple to explore the generous creative features of both new cameras. The intuitive Graphic Display makes it easy to understand the relation between shutter speed and aperture, plus the effects of your chosen exposure settings on the final picture. The Help Guide offers clear, concise explanations of camera functions, illustrated by a sample image to show the results you’ll achieve. Quick access to shooting and playback function menus is streamlined by colourful on-screen icons.

The α390 and α290 both include a mini-HDMI terminal for direct connection to any HD Ready TV (requires optional cable). Support for PhotoTV HD ensures even better-looking still image reproduction on compatible BRAVIA™ models. BRAVIA™ Sync allows control of slideshow and other camera playback functions in comfort using your TV remote.

The stylish, easy to use new α390 and α290 DSLR cameras from Sony will be available from summer 2010.

An article with pictures and a few specs about the new Sony A290 and A390 appeared today in a Swedish photo magazine, “Digitalfoto för Alla” #9 (possibly published one tay early?)
The much criticized grip of the A230/A330/A380 series is gone, and replaced with a more conventional and apparently with much better ergonomic.
The Smart Teleconverter button is moved out of the way a little, up onto the camera top.
Resolution of the low end model is increased with 40%, so now both are equipped with 14 Mp image sensors. Couldn’t find any mention of it being CCD or CMOS, but have made a quick browse only so far.
And A390 has Quick LiveView, while A290 has not (thanks Sony, for not confuse us unnecessarily!).
Still no video.

Introductory prices in Sweden (approximately converted to Euro)
A290 + 18-55 mm 600 Euro
A390 + 18-55 mm 800 Euro
There will also be dual kits with the 55-200 mm too.

Common specs for both A290 and A390:
9 AF points
ISO up to 3200
In-camera SteadyShot
2,7″ Screen
Either Memory Stick or SD memory cards (no dual slot, but a single combo slot).
New Help Guide + Tip Function (very clever, says the magazine writer).
HDMI Output

Update: I forgot that Canon also filed a patent for a touchscreen DSLR few months ago.

The first patent is about a touchscreen DSLR from Sony:

PhotographyBay has the whole story, here is a part of the patent application:

The touch panel 332 functions as a touched position detector that detects the touched position where the user touches the display screen 33f of the rear monitor 33, whereby a user’s operation can be inputted.

The thus configured rear monitor 33, when the approaching eye sensor 15 detects that an eye of the user has approached, is shut off to prevent glare produced by the display screen 33f and reduce electric consumption thereof. In the touch panel 332, however, some touch buttons (icons B1 to B5 in FIGS. 6A and 6B) remains active (turned on) while the other touch buttons (tracking AF frames Bp in FIGS. 6A and 6B) are turned off, as will be described later. – US Patent Appl. No. 2010/0134676

The second patent is for a camera voice recognition from Canon which is probably targeted at the p&s market.

Many Sony lenses will be updated next year: the SSM & SAM lenses will stay unchanged, “but anything currently with a screw drive focus will be replaced with a motor”. In general Sony will offer more all-round zooms lenses, and will focus on fast glass, prime and special purposes lenses. Some of the expected lenses are:

16-80mm with SSM (or a revised 16-105mm)

10-24mm SAM

18-270mm SAM OSS

70-300mm f/4-5.6 SSM OSS

60mm f/2 SAM

The Sony Alpha 7XX (750?) will have 1080i video and the same sensor as the NEX5/3, 7fps, panorama mode and wide range 3-shot HDR. The optical viewfinder will be comparable to the A700, and it will have SSS. Prototypes of the camera were shown with a CZ 16-80mm lens.

“We are also developing new models in the Alpha range. This year we will introduce some new models of SLR.”

He specifically confirmed that there is a room for new Alpha 200 and 300 series (Sony a290 already leaked). Mr. Katsumoto also said that HD video recording for DSLR is currently in development but he doesn’t have a set release date. Sony will continue to manufacture cameras with both APS-C and full frame sensors and the plan is to integrate 3D in their future camera product line (they added digital cameras to their 3D end-to-end solution few months ago).
