Abstract: We propose a method to realistically insert synthetic objects into existing photographs without requiring access to the scene or any additional scene measurements. With a single image and a small amount of annotation, our method creates a physical model of the scene that is suitable for realistically rendering synthetic objects with diffuse, specular, and even glowing materials while accounting for lighting interactions between the objects and the scene. We demonstrate in a user study that synthetic images produced by our method are confusable with real scenes, even for people who believe they are good at telling the difference. Further, our study shows that our method is competitive with other insertion methods while requiring less scene information. We also collected new illumination and reflectance datasets; renderings produced by our system compare well to ground truth. Our system has applications in the movie and gaming industry, as well as home decorating and user content creation, among others.

Think Tank Photo Speed Demon v2.0 bag preview

Few days ago Think Tank Photo released new and re-designed versions of their Speed Convertible bags. Those are hybrid bags that can be worn on the shoulder or as a belt pack. The new Speed Convertible series will be released on June 8th, 2011. You can sign up to this website and Think Tank will notify you once they get them in stock. This is a quick preview of the Speed Demon v2.0 from an early factory sample (click on each image for larger view). Check also the bigger Speed Freak v2.0 and Speed Racer v2.0 versions.

The Speed Demon can easily hold two flashes (Nikon SB-900), a pro body, a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens (reversed hood) and another lens (in this case the Nikkor 24mm f/1.4). The top lid has a small opening for quick and easy access:

In a typical ThinkTank fashion, there is a large external pocket that includes a rain cover and multiple smaller compartments:

The bag strap has a new non-slip design that I have not seen on another Think Tank product:

The waist belt can be completely tucked in the specially designed zippers compartments. There are also two additional side pockets that can easily fit an addition lens or a water/beer bottle.

Think Tank Photo to Release Redesigned Bags in New Speed Convertible Series

Santa Rosa, Calif. – In June, Think Tank Photo will release its redesigned Speed Demon™ V2.0, Speed Freak V2.0™, and Speed Racer™ V2.0 as shoulder bags in its new Speed Convertible Series. Each Speed Convertible bag features a “disappearing” belt that tucks away into the sides of the bag, significantly reducing bulkiness. Within seconds, the shoulder bags seamlessly convert into belt packs once the integrated belts are deployed.

Features include a flip-top lid that folds away from the body for rapid and convenient access to gear. A fully padded shoulder strap with embedded non-slip material is included, which also supports the bag while in belt pack mode. The soft kidney-shaped design contours comfortably around the body. Today ThinkTank Photo announced a new Retrospective 5 bag. This is the first bag from ThinkTank especially designed for Micro Four Thirds or rangefinder camera systems. I got an early pre-production version few days ago and here are some images:

Think Tank Photo Sling-O-Matic 30 hands-on

Three weeks ago Think Tank Photo announced their latest sling bag line called Sling-O-Matic. Thanks to the nice people behind Think Tank, I was able to try (exclusively?) a pre-production version of their Sling-O-Matic 30 model:

The opening is on the side which provides quick and comfortable access while the bag is on your shoulder:

A Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 (the lens on the left) easily fits in with the hood on. Behind the main opening, there is a separate compartment for a laptop (up to 15.4”).

Sling bags in general are very comfortable since they can be worn over one shoulder. However, because the weight is not evenly distributed on your back, this sometimes can cause fatigue. Think Tank solved this problem by providing a sliding rails on top of the bag that allows you to switch the position of the main strap and carry the bag over either shoulder. There is also a smaller sliding rail at the bottom to compensate the movement of the strap. The main compartment opening is always on top, independent on which shoulder the bag is carried.

Accessories: Think Tank Photo Sling-O-Matic 30 comes with additional harness system that prevents the bag from sliding. The additional straps can be attached at three different positions on the main shoulder strap. The tripod holder is located on the opposite side of the bag's opening and it comes with additional straps:

Typical to Think Tank bags, you also get a rain cover and plenty of dividers (in this case 9 in addition to the ones already inside the bag - see top pictures)

The ThinkTank Photo Hydrophobia 70-200 water resistant cover has been in development for over two years. It comes with two versions: one for shooting with flash (with a special pocket for the flash unit) and the other is the "normal" version which will be covered in this post. The fabric used on the Hydrophobia is ten times as water resistant as normal fabric. Instead of a "spray" coating, a "film" is applied to the underside of the fabric as well as tricot mesh to protect it, making it a far more impenetrable three-layer fabric. In addition a waterproof tape is applied to all seams, providing an even more water resistant barrier.

Few readers asked me if another lens will fit inside this water cover. The short and unofficial answer is yes. For example the new Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VRII will definitely fit inside - it's 10.5 inches in length and I measured 16 inches from the eyepiece edge to the front (lens+hood+DSLR-mount should fit in 16 inches):

The only problem I saw when using a wide angle lens is with the internal lens strap - if the zoom/focus ring is too close to the mount, there may not be enough space for the strap to go around:

Since I was late reporting this as a rumor before the official announcement, here is a quick preview of the latest product from Think Tank Photo:

Last week Think Tank Photo announced the Airport Takeoff backpack which shares features from the previous Airport rollers and backpack models. I will be posting a more detailed review after I have the chance to use the bag for few weeks but here is a quick preview:

this is a carry on size rolling bag that can be used as a backpack - when not in use the shoulder straps are conveniently stored in a zipped pocket
this bag is BIG, and when filled with equipment can get heavy, but the shoulder straps are solid and can handle the weight
the Airport Takeoff comes with specially designed straps that can be used to attach a tripod on the side and a security cable lock (3 digits combination)
the standard Think Tank rain cover is also included
this product looks like any other carry on language on the outside and nobody will know that you carrying few thousand dollars worth of equipment in it
I counted 25 adjustable Velcro pieces inside the bag which would allow endless layouts to fit your gear
