Updates on the rumored Canon full-frame mirrorless camera *UPDATED*
We already have several teasers, leaks and rumors about the upcoming Nikon mirrorless camera. Here are the latest updates on the Canon full frame mirrorless camera:
- Bloomberg Japan has just published a new article and according to it, Tanaka, Canon's CFO, says that Canon is going to release (a) highest grade mirrorless camera(s) in the second half of this year (this portion was not included in the English version of the article for some reason).
- Newswitch also reported that a Canon executive in a recent interview confirmed that they are considering a full frame mirrorless camera (Thanks Nakayamahanzaemon).
- CanonRumors reports that the new Canon mirrorless camera will not be announced ahead of the Photokina show that starts on September 26: "As for mirrorless, we’re told by those we trust that there is nothing coming camera wise before Photokina, not even an EOS M5 Mark II". Here is what else to expect from Canon for Photokina:
- Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM
- Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III (CR2 on this)
- A Second “big white lens”
- A new video camera body
Based on the above reports, it is possible that Canon will wait for Nikon to get all the attention at Photokina and then announce their new mirrorless solution later this year. Unlike Nikon, Canon is not in a rush to enter the mirrorless market since the company already has 50% global camera market share and is already #1 in the mirrorless segment in Japan.
An update from CanonRumors confirms my theory:
"We’re told that most of the mirrorless hype will belong to Nikon ahead of Photokina next month. A solid source is saying that no official announcement in regards to a full frame mirrorless camera from Canon will happen before Photokina next month."
