BCN Ranking Japan: Canon is #1 in the mirrorless market for 2018

BCN Ranking published their digital camera ranking for the first half of 2018:

  • Fixed-lens cameras: #1 is Nikon with 31%
  • DSLR camera: #1 is Canon with 58.9%
  • Mirrorless camera: #1 is Canon with 30.1%
  • Video cameras: #1 is Panasonic with 44.1%
  • Action cameras: #1 is GoPro with 72.9%

Olympus was the #1 mirrorless camera maker in 2017 with 27.7%, but in 2018 Canon took the lead (no surprise here). The actual surprise is that in the first half of 2018, Nikon got at the #1 spot in the fixed lens camera segment with a market share of 31% (Canon is now at the #2 spot). Nikon doesn't have any interesting Coolpix offering (except the P900), while Canon continues to produce high-end compact cameras.

There is no mention of Sony or Fuji in the BCN+R article. BCN+R collects sales data from approximately 2/3 of all Japanese retail stores.
