Rumors are spreading around the Internet that the new Sony DLSRs may have Sony's Exmor R CMOS Sensor that debuted in the HDR-CX520VE/505VE Handycam line.
The new “Exmor R” CMOS Sensor is twice as sensitive as conventional CMOS sensors thanks to back-illuminated technology that places metal wiring beneath the photo diode instead of above it. Since light is used more efficiently, you can enjoy smoother movement in action sequences and higher image quality in dark conditions such as night scenes.
Two modes are provided for shooting in extremely dark conditions. You can choose the LOW LUX mode when shooting in dim lighting such as candlelight (minimum subject luminance: 3 lux). Or use NightShot in complete darkness, such as to capture wild animals without scaring them away.

That would be such a great improvement!
I herd this same rumor through the rumor mill a few months back as well, I was excited then that it might be true. If so, that would be very instrumental in selling me a new Sony, Alpha right now! Low light photography has been a huge problem for so long. An improvement of that caliber would really set the Alpha line apart from the pack!
Hang on Hang on – this means that the future Nikons (D4 and D800 perhaps?) are going to be EVEN BETTER at high iso?!! I can already see clean files through to ISO 12800.
and if sony doesn’t sell the exmor-r to nikon?
Hummmmmmmmm! Yea, then what?
of course they will sell them. those few pieces of A900 sold would hardly pay for R&D. If sony learned something is, that entry level buyers dont mind buying sony cameras because they are usually one lens no accessories, noname flash exP&Sers, but pros cannot be convinced to switch just by high resolution and low price.
If I remember correctly, Nikon delivers the machines that make sensors to Sony.
Also keep in mind that the sony-nikon cooperation is quite successful. And why would they change a good formula?
So far I’ve not seen any info on Sony actually making Exmor-R sensors anywhere near that large yet.
“of course they will sell them. those few pieces of A900 sold would hardly pay for R&D” – sony uses new exmor sensors in it’s main market – cameras – and that’s fair good enough to return R&D costs.
I’d gladly never see back-illuminated sensors in Nikon/Canon cameras.
Sony needs a good lens line-up to wean pros from Nikon and Canon.
yes in Sony there are only 15-20 lens… zero telephoto lenses
Well, there`s over 100 lenses types on Sony bayonet currently in production so it ain’t that bad – in matter of telephoto too.
