Diagram of new AF system from Sony

Rumor: this new AF system from Sony will be part of the new Alpha 7xx series. Here is what my source was able to recollect:

  • 9 square AF marks
  • all simple cross
  • central double cross (like A 700 and A 900)
  • 10 linear (not selectable or visible) AF assistant
  • all sensors f/4 (yes, no f/5.6)
  • central sensor f/2.8

And this is the diagram I received with that rumor:

Sony is good, but not as good as Nikons.. The main thing how I don’t like about Sony is that their camera body designs are HORRIBLE.

Some comments that way about the new 3xx and 2xx series. But this rumor places it in a 7xx series.

The a700 body design is really sweet

I love my D300, but I gotta say that the ergonomics on the Sony a700 and a900 are noticeably superior.

I dig the way the A900 & 850 look as well (aside from the huge orange alpha logo). They look lean and mean to me, they’ve trimmed off all the excess space and paired it down to the bare minimum. Function over form.

The only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger and switching to Sony is their proprietary hot shoe mount. It may be better then the industry standard, but it’s not standard. I really, really don’t want to fiddle with hot shoe adapters. It’s a shame, those CZ lenses are sweet.

Heath, What is so HORRIBLE about the Sony A700 design?. It is one of the best out there. Improvement such as this AF system will make it even better.

The A700 design isn’t bad, I just wish it was a little smaller. I think the A850 and A900 designs are terrible looking. I’m hoping to upgrade to the A7xx whenever it comes out, I just hope they go more A550 sized instead of A850. I’ve been teetering on going over to Nikon, but don’t want to move until the A7xx comes out. The design/features in that model willmake my mind up for me- one way or the other.

Hehe, it’s quite the opposite for me – I prefer it to be a little bit bigger (but just a little) and perhaps heavier so that it would balance better with longer lenses…
About the design – well, I preferred “all-black” finishing like in A200/300/350 but in shape A5xx looks bit better.
Whatever Sony or Nikon looks better…. well – it depends on camera. IHMO one of the ugliest DSLRs around is D3x – there’s no angle it would look good from.

Luckily the a900 and D3x are not all that self-conscious, and are more concerned with getting the job done and doing it damn well. :P

I have some information about this, but the sensors are not f/4 they are f/7.1, I think there are a mistake.

Making them f/4 would make no sense at all. Who would buy a dSLR where the kit lens would not autofocus? lol..

The news is lovely! After ALL THAT TIME we’ll get Sony DSLR with all cross sensors! And what’s more – there will be support from linears too… and the f/4 sensor… it could hardly be any better! Seems that with this model all the bashing from Canikon fans about Sony AF will go away, hehehe ;)

FYI, a f4 sensor is WORSE than f5.6, not better… It would mean that no lens over f4 could focus (= all consumer lenses :-) .
    Very very unlikely… :-)

Well this looks just like the standard A700/A900 cam already. They already have the invisible helpers now, and the single cross in the center. Those bits on the outside corners make zero sense: the photographer would need to see those active and would need to know when those in particular were chosen.

I cry foul. This is merely a diagram from current product. New AF system will be… NEW.
