The rumor is that JVC-Kenwood Holdings is in talks to buy Pentax (source - Google translation). Hoya (the parent company of Pentax) quickly denied that report (source). It is not a secret that Hoya has been trying to do something with Pentax, based on previous history of comments from C-level executives (see here and here). HOYA CEO said "It's unnecessary to keep Pentax camera division in the HOYA Corporation" (source).

I could be wrong (what else is new), but if memory serves me JVC is a unit of Matsushita, which is better known as Panasonic. Panasonic no longer wanted to play in the DSLR realm, so there is no point to this rumor.
JVC has been spun off by Matsushita (Panasonic). They merged with Kenwood in October 2008.
Thanks for the updated info.
Actually, celebrate for you are correct
BUT this is only partly true as JVC has the ability to act independently of Matsushita as long as they can demonstrate viability. However, I do think the idea of JVC buying Pentax is a bit far fetched. The two companies are very, very different. Maybe that’s the key, though? JVC has been so bland for so long, perhaps Pentax’s ability to think out of the box could help?
Yep, I was “right”
umm errr that I could be “wrong”.
Mistral75 posted an update above and he/she was correct.

The merge was a defensive one between companies struggling for their future. JVC Kenwood Holdings, the parent companies, is listed on the Tokyo stock exchange.
“The parent company”, sorry for the typo.
hoya has been trying “to do something” or “to undo samsung” with pentax?! Samsung would have been the best future for pentax, they did business with pentax before entered like the devil (un menage a trois). samsung’s only fault is that they are not japanese.
… before **hoya** entered like the devil (missing word typo above).
Seeing recent news from Samsung to develop it’s own mount, I can’t help but thinking this rumour has some truth to it.
Probably Japanese is still Japanese afterall, only to sell to fellow country-mate.
“only to sell to fellow country-mate”
Some background info on Pentax which might be of interest:
Pentax started as a German camera name (Pentaprism + Contax), which was acquired by Asahi Optical Co. Asahi’s U.S. marketing partner was Heiland, a Denver-based manufacturer of flash equipment. Honeywell/Heiland was acquired by 3M. So, depending on year of manufacture, what started as the Asahiflex may be marked Asahi Pentax, Heiland Pentax, or Honewell Pentax. It’s not a premium version, just later manufacture. A 1964 Pentax would be marked Heiland. I’m not sure when the badges changed to Honeywell. Honeywell had acquired Heiland in 1949.
