The Street reported that Apple has picked a 8MP sensor from Sony for the upcoming 2011 iPhone:
"Apple has picked Sony's 8-megapixel camera chip for the 2011 iPhone, according to supply and manufacturing sources, said Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar."
OmniVision reported that Apple ordered 5MP sensors from them for the next, 2010 iPhone.
2010: 5MP
2011: 8MP
Why posting iPhone rumors here? Because the iPhone is now the most popular camera on flickr.

It’s 2010 right now…. the OmniVision 5MP sensor is claimed to be in the “next” iPhone (the 2010 model due out in a few months), the 8MP Sony sensor is claimed to be in the 2011 model (not the “next” one).
oops – thanks, I update the post
Because pumping megapixels into a pinhole cam will make all those shakeycam photos on Flickr sooooo much better…
Megapixels is a number that defines how good a camera is. It’s not a number about the amount of pixels, diffraction or increased NR for that plastic wrap look. IQ automatically increases, the higher this megapixel number is. Even the content in the photos gets better if this number is ludicrous in relation to sensor size, “It takes great photos!!”
How many megapixels do they need to cram into the iPhone to make the noisy shakeycam effect go away?
really? i better sell my d40 then and save up for this… ken will not be pleased!
Tiny hole -> less light -> bigger iso -> more noise
more MP -> more noise
more noise -> poor color
more noise -> poor definition
bigger definition -> finaly less defenition …
A) Is sarcasm beyond you?
B) You are missing an important step in there. Crappy Light + Piss Poor ISO performance -> Ridiculous Shutter Speeds -> Blur’o'matic photos
False rumours. Truth is, on my advice the new iPhone 2011 will sport the fabulous D40x sensor and will therefore be called the iRock.
Sure, some funny guy may try to convince you it will be call the iKen but we all know tha is just a cheap laugh.
Well I have to say that it’s important to remember first and foremost that it’s a phone that happens to have a built-in sensor that records images (and video) but it’s not a camera.
I use my ‘image sensor’ phone for images often enough – but it’s not a camera – it is amazing what can be done with it – and I’ve actually recorded some nice images, even though they can’t be enlarged to much size. Good for Mac, but it’s still a relative after thought when I consider a phone purchase.
