    All-black +1

1000€ = street price of 850€ – they will sell these like nothing. I will get one for sure, maybe not in March ’11.

    Two things:
The VF magnification of 0.5 worries me a little bit.

If Fuji really believes the x100 is a test balloon for an upcoming IL-version, I’d have preferred a mFT-Version, I’m still convinced it’s easier to enter an open market than to build one by your own (except you’re Canon or Nikon). But I’ll buy the x100 anyway. fact.

You can get an idea of the impact of the x100 if you take a look at the poll over at Dpreview.com. Yesterday’s poll was led by he x100 with a steady 36% (10.000+ votes). Earlier today the poll was re-startet with the addition of the SD1, K5, GH2 and the x100 STILL leads the poll with 26% (6000 votes).

the poll tells you how people like it, not how they’d buy it. that’s highly price dependent and $1000 is too much. Half of that and I’ll buy it the moment it comes out. For this money… not interested.

Pavel, I understand the message of the poll.

$1000 is a serious price. But its a serious camera too. And if the IQ and overall handling lives up to the specs, the camera will become an icon.

Also a street price of 850€ would be *less than half* the price of a Leica X1 without VF and only a fraction more than a Sigma DP2s with VF (today).

Best thing that could happen: there will be competition and you will be able to pick up your dream camera for the price you find reasonable :)

Sorry, but this camera wasn’t designed with you in mind. $500? I think the Canon s90 is more for you. There’s a huge market of people willing to pay more than $500 for p&s and also u43. This camera appeals to the next level above that. I think Fuji is tailoring this camera to the folks that carry D700, 5DII, D3, 1D, etc. not the p&s crowd.

I have D700 ;) Plus multiple 2.8 lenses, so money in general is not the problem. The camera is just too expensive for what it does. It’s PnS with guts of cheap DSLR. It looks pretty but that’s it.
And it is camera for people like me who don’t need zoom, want small camera with decent high iso quality….. for price I’d not need to worry all the time I take it somewhere with me.
Of course, if I design it, I’d add IS, flash, WL flash control and a wider lens.
I was looking at Samsung TL500, Nikon p7000 and was even at evils, though I don’t like any of them. Oly PL1(?) looks the best.

It’s not always a features/price thing. A lot of us are tired of carrying around heavy equipment. A simpler machine with good image quality, solid build, viewfinder, top optics, no frills photography machine, and physical control is what we crave. Look, I have a heavy Nikon system and love the ergonomics of their controls but I cannot stand the weight any longer. I got a GF-1 for the simplicity, low weight, etc for shooting around, but it has too many compromises. I primarily have the 20mm on the GF-1 all the time. The closest machine to my desire is the M9, but there is no AF and is a financial ripoff. Then along comes Fuji and it looks like it fulfills my needs. I don’t even use the Nikon that much anymore. Serious photo demand the Hassy. The Nikon is reserved for fast action or when high-iso is needed or when my specific Nikkors are needed. There are no perfect or universal camera. I’ve come to realize that. I get the machine for the need. This camera fits so perfectly for everyday shooting. I will no longer have a need for the GF-1 and the one spectacular u43 lens. Fuji is fixed lens. I don’t care. For all intent, the GF-1 is a fixed lens machine for me too.

“Sorry, but this camera wasn’t designed with you in mind. ”

Well said. Couldn’t agree more. It is designed for the advanced photographer and pros looking for a carry-around camera, who value function over form, performance over gizmos. If you don’t get it, maybe it’s not the camera.

        • Posted September 21, 2010 at 6:09 pm | Permalink

Do you mean “form over function”?
A strip-down version with just A, S + M modes, no video, is also fine for me. (For $500.)

The x100 might do the same the LX1 did for Panasonic. Increase Reputation. The LX pushed the image of Panasonic and the x100 – and it’s successors – can do the same for Fuji.

Mmmh, I’d like to know how expensive the sensor/processors really are. Because else, there is not much difference.

I’m still wondering why the megapixel-war is still going on but the larger sensors don’t get cheaper. What’s the difference if you put a FF sensor into a D7000 – its the same size, uses the same mount as the D700, yet the D700 is twice the price.

Probably its 80% marketing and 20% material cost.

I agree…and we dont know(at least i dont) RD costs and etc, so….but if we see the price sfrom a LX5, it would insane to think that the X100 would cost the same price…

Film cameras had the same price distinction and the “sensor” was totally the same – 35mm film ;) Each level roughly doubled in price from the previous model.
D7000 and D700 has quite a few differences but also keep in mind, D700 came up with D90. The new D700 will be way better than D7000 and I assume it will cost the same as today D700 (plus minus)

    FUJI & SIGMA = Photokina winners !

Nikon : inovation but nothing really new in terms of sensor ameliorations.

Canon : boring as hell this year.

I will certainly convert to Sigma which concentrates my attention since a long time now. The foveon sensor is the best idea since digital slrs came out, its just a pain that dont have the monney to go further.
I would buy a Full Frame 15MP Foveon camera in 1 blink !

You’re forgetting one important thing – you can buy Nikon or Canon now but Fuji maybe next year and Sigma….? Judging from SD15 multiple announcement and the fact SD1 is not finished product with announced release date at all… :(
Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea of Foveon since it came out 10 years ago but the cameras it was in and the results were quite disappointing.
Put this new sensor on FF and into Nikon, Canon, Pentax body and if it has good quality, I put it on my list.

foveon in a Nikon would be great. foveon (or bayer, or whatever) in a sigma is wasted. sd14 started at almost 2000 euros and ended at 300 € circa. guess why…

If a G12 is $500 with a 1/1.7″ sensor then this Fuji with an APS sensor is completely justified at $1000. You might not like it, might not be able to afford it, but it is worth every penny.

      • pavel
        Posted September 21, 2010 at 7:03 pm | Permalink

How does that make any sense? Cheap DSLR with the same sensor cost as little as $400 new. With zoom lens. Exchangeable lens. 1/1.7 sensor cost probably like $5 to make, APS-C sensor maybe $10.
It’s all only about how much Fuji decide to charge. they won’t be loosing money on the camera priced $500 or $1000. But they will be making profit maybe $100 vs $400 per camera. The question is, will it be $100 x 100.000 vs $400 x 10.000? Better or worse? Hopefully, marketing department at Fuji knows better what they do….

They clearly realized that 1700 euro was insane. 20% is tax, some import fees (5%?). Official importer takes at least 10%. Seller buys for 25% less then sells…. Fuji would get 700-800 euro per camera and sells like….? Nothing?

Well.. 1000$ would not be really expensive..
you have to compare it with gf1 +20mm for example.. here in germany street price between 700-750€ introduced at 950€
so 1000$/1000€ not that bad if you consider the quality..

if you want to spend less.. right now i would by a samsung nx100 (same sensor size) with the really great 30mm f2 prime.. price not out yet but should be introduced around 550-650€.. i think thats best price/value! : )

I agree Chris. The Samsung NX 100 not only looks fantastic but the 30mm f2 is a terrific lens. I saw that the price of the NX100 with the upcoming 20mm lens will have a suggested retail of $649 but I’m sure it could quickly be had for less. Samsung has terrific looking primes lined up. Still, I think I’d rather spend a little bit more and get the X100. :-)

  18. chris
    Posted September 22, 2010 at 8:02 am | Permalink

it is not really pricey.. basically same price as gf1 +20mm + viewfinder
but x100 should be better quality.. and damn.. just look at it.. the x100 looks really really nice. and i bet it would somehow be more fun too shoot with it : )

i think panasonic/oly or m43 in general would never come out with something like that because this setup with optical/electronic viewfinder combination in such a small body only works with fixed lens..
so if you build it with mount than you lose optical viewfinder.. and i think that the whole point of this camera.. there isnt really anything better than m43 or samsung nx100 but it has optical viewfinder build in and really nice direct control. basically like 3 wheels (direct aperture / shutter speed access + wheel on the back)

Yeah, it just put a smile on my face the moment I first laid eyes on it.

All of the right touches and accents. I was almost disappointed when the little lever on the front didn’t turn out to be a manual self timer and the corrugated window wasn’t a photovoltaic meter cell :-)

has optical viewfinder build in and really nice direct control…..direct aperture / shutter speed access…

This is so perfect (for me anyways).
Turn the aperture ring and set the shutter speed knob for manual control. Turn the aperture ring to ‘A’ and you’re in Shutter Priority. Turn the shutter knob to ‘A’ and you’re in Aperture Priority. Turn them both to ‘A’ and work in Auto Mode.

And a classic viewfinder styled camera that I can focus down to 10cm. Wow, that beats the heck out of my 1936 Kodak Retina Type 122 where I have to screw on a close-up filter and then add a baseplate with an extended wire frame.

This camera won’t replace my DSLR but it excites me like no new camera I’ve seen in years. Fuji built the camera for me and my checkbook is already out.

Yes, $500 *would* be more reasonable…

…but this is a Corvette ZR1 vs. a Ferrari situation. You’ve got a less expensive machine that has generally higher performance figures, the sacrifice is in the precision engineering, attention to detail at every angle, and, of course, the marquee attached to the hood.

The ZR1 is $100,000. $50,000 would be more reasonable. The sky is blue. Grass is green. Awesome. Hell, why we’re at it, free would be more reasonable.
