Times zoom is the new MegaPixel. I think these lenses are mostly aimed at the consumers who want the best of the best, but know not that much of photography and what makes a lens good. There is a growing number of people just looking at the MP-count and the zoomratio.

difference between 600mm equivalent and 1200mm equivalent is none. especially if it comes with reduced sharpness and slower lens. It is just cheap way to wow masses but have no real use.
besides, if pic is good, you can always crop, especially if you are not going to blow it to 80×60, but you cannot go wider if you cannot.

Hopefully, when Canon release this camera, it will come with a ten pound tripod in the box :-)

1116mm at f/5.74 on a small sensor is indeed not doable just handholding in slightly dim weather.

I would suggest, that this lens is not for a p&s photo camera, but for a pro/semipro video camera instead.
