The next Fuji X100 firmware update to be released in the next two weeks?

Online chatter indicates that the next Fuji X100 firmware update may be released in the next two weeks which matches exactly with the end of our X100 camera giveaway :) Last week Fujifilm Japan already confirmed that they are working on a second firmware update.

Yeah! Awesome! Someone will be sooooo happy this summer. If I’d win, I’d start year long Photo-A-Day project with this camera.

What, that comment came to a totally wrong post. How is that possible. Sorry.

I was told unofficially by Fujifilm technical support that they were anticipating a new firmware update soon, but they weren’t aware of the exact timing.

    Manual focus fix. **fingers crossed**

What’s the deal with the manual focus? Is it as bad as slow as the X1?

Manual focus is better than the X1 that I used. The problem I highlighted in my review was movements in the ring do not always translate to change in focus. It is a little laggy and not as good as a direct physical coupling. It could do with fixing, but may be fundamental to the physical construction, rather than firmware. I have found that the easy workaround is to press the AFL button to prefocus then manual focus. That means less rotating the ring to change all the way from the last position focused to the other end of the scale. Twist twist twist twist twist.

People have also criticised AF.S mode focussing speed. AF.S does not constantly pre-focus, so it’s a little laggy (not too bad, but not as fast as a F300EXR). I have two workarounds. One is simply to use AF.C mode which works fine.

The other workaround is to remember that the both the home position and default AF distance in AF.S mode is 2.2m. If you are photographing in a situation of poor light and with a subject of low contrast, position yourself between 1.9m and 2.6m away and shoot. Your subject will be in focus, even at f/2.

In brighter light, when I’m shooting candids or kids, I manually select a smaller aperture and take advantage of the increased depth of field. At f/16 and at the default focussing position the X100′s focussing scale shows that the DoF is from 1.4m to 5.0m. DoF Master software calculates it to be even deeper, from 0.95m to infinity. In practice, I can usually accept 0.95m to infinity. Given the camera’s ability to take clear photos in high ISO, it’s rare that I cannot shoot daylight shots indoors or out and not be able to use hyperfocal focussing to get the shot. This is instantaneous focussing with zero lag.

Sometimes you just have to really get to know your camera, quirks and all, in order to get the most out of it. You have to go beyond the manual, experiment with it, take measurements and make tests. Or you can read about it from someone who has already done all the work. I wrote about all this months ago on my Twitter blog. Click through my ZDP-189 name to go to the blog here: http://twitter.com/#/zdp189

I quite agree with your comment. I have not much expectation on the AF performance but quite eager to see a better synchronization of the MF ring with the real focusing movement. At least, Fuji should provides an option of slow, normal, fast options for the MF coupling. Just like the mouse speed can be adjusted in Windows. A lot of people just see X100 is an alternative of Leica with fixed prime lens.

I’m very happy with my x100, I have a quick question: I shoot most of my pictures using the OVF but I’d like to watch the playback of the pictures on the LCD screen, is there anyway to do that? can they fix it with a new firmware? thanks
