Reuters reports that Sony plans to increase its sensor production by 50% in the next 2-3 years. On Monday Sony opened its fourth CMOS sensor line in their Nagasaki factory. In addition to its own camera lines, Sony supplied sensors to many other manufacturers like Nikon and Apple.

Is this to be a 300mm fab?
Unless this is a new plan, they were already talking about doing this…
Sensor tech is frustrating. It doesn’t seem to be getting good as fast as other technologies. Why are large sensors still so expensive? Why can’t anybody make a sensor bigger than 645 for photography? It doesn’t even have to have super high resolution. I’d love to see a 30mp 6×7 sensor in a digital Mamiya 7 body.
