A new social network for photographers will be announced in the next few days. I will have more details soon. My understanding is that it will be a combination of Flickr, Facebook and Photoshelter.

= corporate social network. no thanks.
I’d rather go with a vimeo photo network !
photographer’s social network is worth nothing without customers.
pros have no time to blub on forums about gear or other crap.
only reason why facebook is attractive to us is that it brings customers
social network with just photogs is glorified forum – time waster
This social network has the tools to provide you with clients in a way that Facebook could only dream of.
Hopefully its better than Google+.
What moron at Google decided that you shouldn’t be able to post on your friend’s page — the single most beloved thing to do on social networks (being social). That back-and-forth is the BASIS of the communications that start up networks (not single posts on one’s own page).
Geniuses still haven’t added the feature.
> pros have no time to blub on forums about gear or other crap.
Does this explain why you are posting here?
love the term “pro”. pro state. pro nography pro letare probotomy.
zenfolio
@photoartbymark – Don’t you mean flikzenfolioplus500px?
(God – what a mouthful THAT was)…
And this news as I am half way though setting up a new photo web site for myself too.
DAMN IT Interwebs, can’t you leave anything the way it is for more than 5 minutes?
is anybody really waiting for this?
It seems to me like Google+ is social networking for photographers. In my circles, the only active people are photographers, but of those photographers, they’re all pretty popular (ie. have lots of people in their circles).
NOOOOO they took my idea…
It’ll offer something the other networks never will.
It won’t be corporate either.
If the site can redistribute my pics without permission I will avoid it at all costs.
It doesn’t do that at all. Imagine a website designed by photographers to meet the needs of photographers. That is the idea. All while taking the corporate crap out of the picture.
It must be either ad driven, sponsored or subscription based? I’m hoping it’s an elegant solution; It’s hard looking at photos while being bombarded by ads, friend request, pokes and prods, or be distracted by huge list of comments…
I’m excited!
To meet the needs of photographers? I as a photographer don’t need a social network just for my photography. Flickr does a good enough job. The fact that you, most likely the owner / admin of the site (Kevin) are posting about it on photo-rumors says enough that this’ll be a failure.
What kind of photographers??? Advertising photographers, Catalog photographers, Editorial photographers, Fashion Photographers Food photographers or just Retail Wedding, Event and Portrait photographers???
But unless photogs bring something unique to the table instead of posting the same round robin of crap everywhere, really what’s the point? Another place to log in – don’t need that. I’d prefer that photogs work on new unique content rather than worrying so much about the social bullsh&t. In the high end markets, number of followers won’t get you work – it’s what you produce that counts. A friend of mine hasn’t picked up a camera in two weeks because he’s all worried about adding friends, bigger circles et al.
@admin: I hope this is not about “Picturesocial” … not that I have anything against that site, it just does not seem the kind of thing that some here are suggesting (for professionals to sell, get new clients, socialize etc) as for me at least, it’s got a very “pre-Facebook” feel to it…
I don’t think so. The site I mentioned is not launched yet.
That’s ok.
Thanks for the reply.
More corpo bullshit pretending not to be, the urban outfitters of social networks.
I hope it is better than that dreadfully run’d Model Mayhem…Internet Brands has had it for over 3 years…and still cannot release an update without destroying 4 or 5 other items. Poor Customer Service.
There are a whole bunch of social web sites for models and photographers. I agree that Model Mayhem is a disaster.
The only site run by people who know what they’re doing these days is Model Insider.
And all copyrights are given to facebook. Billions of crappy images by people who wished they where photographers… No thankyou.
No, they’re not. Facebook does not claim copyright, nor could they outside of a separate, written agreement. They require, as to all sites, a license to show your uploads. That’s all. Please do not spread misinformation.
It’s not misinformatin. Facebook has already stated that once your images are uploaded to their servers they OWN that content. It should be simple. You should be able to upload and delete your photos at your will without having companies telling you what they can and can’t do with your photos.
No, Facebook has said nothing of the kind. You are, in a word, wrong.
Please cite the terms that make this claim. Facebook claims a perpetual royalty-free license. That is NOT the same as ownership and is NOT the same as copyright assignment. Please consult with your attorney if you are in any way unclear on this concept.
It’s been well known for sometime even if you delete photos from facebook they aren’t deleted from facebook’s database or server’s. That is the issue I’m pointing out. Many people have deleted their entire profiles to find their photos still remain. It is an issue.
Kevin, now you’re changing the subject. He said that Facebook takes ownership. It does not.
Your issue is, indeed, an issue, but it’s not the one we were discussing.
not interested.
social networks are for little girls. if you have market for little girls, you are there and without expenses grab some share for you.
i dont want my clients seeing other photographers.
i dont want my photo budies seeing my clients
so if your market is (again) amateur photographers exchanging free old and ugly models and nicely rating other’s crappy pics to get your crappy pics top rated, well then you will have hard times to make any moneys out of it.
and you will need moneys to run it. Software is not everything. 1000 users, which is DAMN NONSENSE LOW for social network of any kind means you need beefy server and will have lot of issues.
so, .com bubble is burst, try to find some better thing to do.
for example
Deviant Art’esque site for invited artists with auctions. there is market for it and i would pay 1000eur monthly for working service like that.
The best part about this soapbox/high horse post is the hypocrisy. You are on a social network whether you want to admit it or not. This forum is a social network. What’s it like to not have your crap not stink?
Like we don’t already have enough social networking sites for photographers…
Anyway, if ‘a combination of Flickr and Facebook’ means that all images on Flickr will also be on Facebook, then I’ll immediately cancel my Flickr account.
Flickr may soon be a Microsoft site (they are in talks with Yahoo to buy them).
If that happens I’m definitely going elsewhere.
Microsoft (Windows) isn’t that bad when you learn how to use a computer properly
Any of you fellas ever consider this – if you don’t like the idea, don’t sign up. What’s with all the trolling over a site that isn’t even open yet? Go take some pictures and stop your whining!
I think you are all in for a shock when it’s released.
no, last time i was shocked was when i got first erection.
there is little on this world which can really shock somebody
but we seen lot of tryouts…
even offering of some 100TB of space wont cut it. Because such proposition is always untrustworthy.
I skimmmed most of the comments here. g+ has more than photographers, I have created a shoppers circle and zazzlers circles and pets and wildlife things. I got into brands and g+ news things.
I am a small business online and a professional photographer. As most of us we live in crappy towns with too many photographers makeing it and others who want to make it can’t. I can not work outside my home all I have is my photography. So I promote with social sites because I have the time and know how to do it. I am always looking for more places especially free ones. The more places I am in the more my photos and products get seen. I wish people would take me serious to hire me or buy bulk orders sell them in thier gift shops and like vendors. I am looking for publishers and all kinds of companies that will help get me out there.
If the social networking places can make this happen for us and any business do better and get sales then its a good thing. Everything out there is NOT perfect. They can only do better by thier mistakes.
I do all my promoting for free I teach on it. How many pages are you in google I am almost 5,000 due to a company who found me and hired me and is markeing my products every where. Amazon, Sears, ect… And I thank god for her. Yes she begged me for my photos and I signed a contact and it will be renewed because I am making them money as well.
In a nut shell we need to get rid of the bad make it better learn from it teach it,and help others too.
I am just a simple every day person knows right from wrong and its just my opinon good or bad.
Love how a photo website had to resort to a photoshopped paste-a-random-camera-on random-dude picture. We can’t even see his hands!
You know that is the cover to the movie “Social Network”, right? And that random guy is the main character, Mark Zuckerberg (played by an actor whose name escapes me). The image makes tons of sense, I just wonder about the legality of it….
I just signed up on a new DigitalRev site. Just as I was getting started, they went down for upgrade. I wonder if that is the one referenced here, or if there is another.
No, it’s not DigitalRev
It’s been a week (well 5 days) now since you posted the teaser, but so far, only derision (a good word don’t you think?) for the new as yet, to be launched and unnamed site and … no more.
I think this site has decided to pack up and go away… or has it?
I do not have a firm launch date, I just know it will be in the first week of December.
Ah… So you mean NEXT week – the second week of December…
I’m just being pedantic as today is the Friday – the end of? – the first week of December… Of course, it all depends on how you look at it, are we talking about the 7th day of the month or NEXT Friday, which is the second Friday of the month…
