Similar to the Leica i9 concept and the WVIL hoax, this Apple iCam concept created by Antonio DeRosa uses the iPhone as the core for a mirrorless camera system:

In comparison the Japanese camera makers just plugged a sensor into their old boxes. Inside it looks like a grandfathers clock, just to drive the stupid mirror. The required software to run the digital part is written in some butchers shop, eg. an old version of DOS. Little has gone forward just to protect the stone age investment. The next best thing in their product collections would be sleeping bags.

      Enjoy yourself!

No matter how hard you try, you can’t quash your unfulfilled need for an iPhone by making uninformed comments about it.

I love my iPhone and think this would be a fun toy to have if it ever actually materializes. If it does actually get made and doesn’t cost more than the phone, I’ll get one!

When I received my iPhone4 (when it first came out) I was enthralled by its design, camera image quality, and processing power. Then I discovered Hiptamatic, and fell in love even more… There were many times I wished I could simply ‘plug’ my iPhone into my Nikon D300 and combine the better IQ and professional lenses of my DSLR with the connectivity and ease of use of my iphone.

Recently I purchased Snapseed (love it!), and I can see how a concept camera like the one in this article (or even the Leica i9 concept) could be a near future reality.

I for one would welcome the ability to plug my i-device into a better sensor/lens body, and then using a program like Snapseed (or whatever lies ahead) to intuitively post process my image(s) on the fly, and then instantly share them with the world.

    : )

I really like the idea to use a smartphone as a core for cameras, car entertainment etc.

But Antonio DeRosa shows again that he does not understand the design principles behind brands like Apple or Leica. Dedication to purpose, simplicity and a craftsmanship that pleasures all senses.

What DeRosa did is simple a mash up for self promotion. Good to know, that this won’t be produced.

i don’t get why they have to look into an Icamera when there iphone will do the job, sounds like its just a corporate ploy to milk more money from consumers “i have an Icamera” give me a break!

And why in the hell wait for that iCam, if you already can use your iPhone 4s as an SLR with SLR lenses (which I suppose the iCam won’t use, meaning, it’s a fixed lens, defenitely NOT a reflex system).

Those of you wishing to mesh the connectivity of an iPhone with the IQ of their DSLR might want to look at the Eye-Fi memory card. The newer ones can create a direct link between many existing DSLRs and your iPhone/iPad and I think Android phones too. I used one on an old D80 to email photos directly out of my camera back to my office with a iPhone 4 in my pocket. When paired with my wife’s iPad, I can show clients a quick and very slick proof on it’s IPS screen. Datacolor also has an App to let you use the Spyder to calibrate the iPad for more accuracy.

The question is… if it can’t lock AF, will it abort or tell the user to go buy a flash?
