Canon working on a new “Super G” compact camera?

canon g12 Canon working on a new Super G compact camera?

The last Canon Powershot G12 was announced in 2010

Valentin Sama of DSLR Magazine wrote on his blog that Canon is working on a new "Super G" compact camera that will probably be announced at the CES (January, 2012) or CP+ (February, 2012) show:

Canon is working on developing a digital compact camera, far superior to anything that might now be in its catalog of more than compact. The new camera can hold the letter "G" in its name, but in reality would not be a successor to the G12 , but a sort of "Super G"

This probably explains why Canon did not update their 2010 G12 model in September as they usually do. Here are some rumored specs for this Canon "Super G" or "Power G" camera from CanonRumors:

  • 12mp (Larger CMOS Sensor)
  • 6.5x Zoom
  • f/2 The Largest Aperture
  • 1080p HD Video (Upgraded Video Features)
  • Optical VF Removed
  • 3″ Articulating Screen (High Resolution)
  • $600 USD

Right. it’s the same I suggested some days before, at the 19th December, on my article at the link under… in Portuguese

Guess one does not need a crystal ball

Why a small sized sensor for a large compact camera? I hope the next new sensor is 2/3″ NOT 1/1.7″

You call 1/1.7 “small”, but not 1/1.5 (2/3″) ? Get real.

He is probably talking about canon answer to mirrorless

It had better be pretty ‘super’ if they want to take the top dog’s spot. Standards have moved on a lot.

    Lemme guess… 1 inch sensor ala Nikon 1? That’d be interesting….

That’s what Chuck Westfall hinted at in the interview at dpreview in November. G-series “need improved image quality”
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2011/11/11/canonppeinterviewsuposedly to compete well with mirrorless.

So I guess no Canon mirrorless anytime soon?

No, looks like smaller dSLRs and better G-series is it for now although they could make more than one larger sensor compact, e.g with different zoom range and/or lens speed.

        I did not know that the Canon G 12 had a mirror…

this mirorless naming is a bad choice . creating a category name on some feature that the camera does not have

without a aps-c sensor the interest = 0 , enough of those stupid small cameras with tiny sensors

My guess: evf, fixed zoom lens, and sensor the size of Nikon 1
If it looks good and has good ergonomics and buttons/dials it will be a win.

After that Nikon 1 let down I had high hopes for a Canon mirrorless…. bummer!

I think the concept would be similar to Fuji X10.
If Canon can do it much better than X10.
That would be a mirrorless killer..

Who need to change the lens with small sensor ?
    Nikon 1 ??
    Pentax Q??

Maybe Canon will return to the Powershot Pro 1 class—2/3 sensor L quality lens, raw capture, 28mm-200mm (field of view) zoom.

That camera will end up being too big for most people, and probably too expensive as well. Canon’s bind with the G12 replacement will be size and/or cost.

      • Posted December 28, 2011 at 8:25 am | Permalink

I think Canon could reduce the Pro 1, but is the 2/3 sensor enough? The market has significantly changed since its release. I owned the G3 (paid $1300 back then) and own the Pro 1.

If mirrorless systems are taking a byte out of the G series, a good solution could be to upscale the camera to a larger sensor, put in their best technology—L class lens, stabilization, a video mode that can yield high detail, etc.

This “super G” should not replace the G12, 13, 14, it should sit on top—king of the heap.

I once had a Canonet QL17 GIII. Best little thing ever, if you could keep it working, which you couldn’t.

Canon should build an APS-C compact with a 23-55mm f2-f3.5 zoom lens. Not a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, a camera with virtually every focal length you’re going to want in one package, for travel, indoors, streets. That focal range would cover 35-85mm, perfect for travel. An add-on wideangle adapter could bring it to 24mm equivalent with some loss of quality.

    I’d buy one.

With the lenses of the X10 28-112 mm / f/2-f/2.8 and its manual zoom.

It’s about time Canon takes a decision about Mirrorless Cameras! But it would be nice to get some real news from them, instead of rumors.

I own a G11, and I love it. It allows me to get great 16×20 prints from a relative small and unobtrusive body size. I would love a larger sensor, and wouldn’t mind a slight increase in body size. But for me it is the relative values of size, zoom range, and image quality combined that make the G series a great walkaround, street smart camera. Of course, the optical viewfinder is important too, specially for quick documentary shooting. My G11 originally was a backup for my dSLR. But now I use my G11 as my primary documentary camera.

Some have suggested it’ll be a APS-H sensor, which I suppose is possible?
