The latest Samsung news

Samsung developed the world's first sensor that can capture both an RGB and range (or depth) image at the same time. (via Gizmodo)

There is a new patent for a Samsung Galaxy camera (via Androidandme).

Samsung also announced a new 8MP camera phone sensor with backside illumination, zero shutter lag, 1.4um pixel pitch with 120fps 720p or 240fps slow motion video recording capabilities:

    insane, can’t wait to see what they do to the sensor when they implement it to a proper camera body.

    the 3D sensing is a nice innovation, but the rest is a shame compared to what Nokia shown last week.

      It is depth image (Z axis). Depth shows different color.

    I guess we’ll start seeing pocket cameras with shallow depth of field… with range information, thay could just fake bokeh in a really convincing way.

      If I understood correctly, Lytro’s tech does the opposite: it can create images with infinite DOF.

      Here is the tech with potential to allow images with shallow DOF.

      If all goes well, fingers crossed, DOF argument against small-sensor cameras would be put to rest.

    The last bastion of FF the DOF control is ready to be controlled by software…

    Of course people will still claim FF does it better that it looks more 3D… Like they do with MF lenses and “Leica look” hahaha!

    Having distance data at the pixel level opens many more possibilities than just DOF- consider variable gain (ISO) applied to different regions of an image illuminated by an on-camera flash. The limitations of the inverse squared law could be made far less obvious.

    Give the software people new data and they will come up all kinds of interesting things to do with it in post-processing.
