Panasonic DMC-FZ150 camera listed as discontinued

In addition to the Sony a900, B&H now lists also the Panasonic DMC-FZ150 camera as discontinued. The FZ-150 was announced in August, 2011 - this is probably the shortest lifespan of a digital camera I have seen - only 7 months.

It is funny. This is a great camera that has generated a lot of hype lately. I am not sure why DPReview, and other places waited to so neat the end of it’s life cycle to push it.

This happens all the time, a camera is listed as discontinued and then reappers (and never disappear in other stores). Panasonic have upgraded their high end superzoom every year in the late summer, I’d expect a replacement in July/August. Unless Panasonic decide it will do for another year. It doesn’t have any real competition at the moment except for the zoom range which is only 24x.

Surely the end is near for small sensor “superzooms” as CSCs offer so much more photographic scope in a no bigger package and at not much more cost?

I acknowledge that bridge cameras were far behind DSLRs in the past. However, sensor, microprism, and optical technology has moved on and they make very good images in all but the lowest light. A small sensor and large zoom range now offers results that are hard to beat without a particularly expensive and bulky system camera and have none of the dust problems that interchangeable lens systems suffer from. Thus they are a good option as a safari camera, for sports or other amateur applications. To suggest otherwise is an oft-repeated fallacy.

I just wish they had continued with the FZ30/50 type body. Brilliant body and lens combo. I’ve taken many great photos with that, and Flickr “award winning” macros (some with help of Oly Mcon 40 aka B macro). Still have two of these cams, and going to be turning them into Photobooth cams. Shooting Nikon DSLR now, but will never part with this gem of a bridge camera design.

Absolutely right! The FZ50 is probably my favorite Lumix – and I have 5 different ones!

“Surely the end is near for small sensor “superzooms” as CSCs offer so much more photographic scope in a no bigger package and at not much more cost?”

Not necessarily…as long as people like long zoom range and eye-level viewfinders these will probably continue to find buyers — lenses to give that kind of range to a interchangeable-lens camera generally cost more than these cameras…and the bodies at that price level generally lack viewfinders and aren’t ergonomically well-suited for use with those long tele zooms.

I don’t know whether this model is actually being discontinued at this point but it does seem like the reviews for this model (generally positive) are just coming out now, probably shortly before it will be replaced with an ‘improved’ model.

I have the FZ30, and really have enjoyed it, but terrible video, and want a larger sensor. I have a Canon xh-a1 20x video cam to, to big to carry around. I looked at the GH2….and was hoping that someone would come up with a new model this year….say the size of Canon 60D…that has the full frame sensor , with 40x zoom…built in lens……shot 24mg photo, like a combination of the xh-a1 and superzoom cameras. I dont want to change lens anymore, and want something I can carry, but feels good in my hands
. 1080P, 24fps. Great audio. Maybe it would be mirrowless. Why cant someone do this. Is this unreasonable?. I looked at the BlackMagic cam and think..wow…they could….I think?

The lens on a full frame would be HUGE if a superzoom. Closest is Nikons 28 -300 full frame, or the upcoming 18 – 300 DX. Or maybe something from Sigma / Tamron in future.

Jivee is right, never mind FF, even APS-C would require a gi-normous lens for that kind of zoom ratio (FF Nikkor 28-300 is 10.7x, Tamron 18-270 is 15x).

Jeff, not sure whether you were merely fantasizing, but I think the closest thing to what you describe is probably the Fujifilm XS-1. Body size & ergonomics are SLR-like, but uses 2/3″ sensor – larger than most compacts but smaller than most interchangeable lens cameras.

        Thanks Guys,
        Guess its not possible…;-(
I looked at the Gh2, 60D, D7000…..that price range…….but all the reviews say that the video is bad, or there is some problem with the cameras. I see that all the camera companies are coming out with there new stuff this year….so maybe someone will get it …”All”..right…in one package. Even the Nikon D800 has video moire…..for 3k you would of thought they would of figured that one out by now. So hoping for something GH3ish……? haha!
