fuji xpro lenses are crap lenses, same as m43 subquality lenses. they are in-camera software corrected, meaning you get cheated out of a quality lens.

    • matgay

oh and the autofocus is subpar

    • Mark

We are all now dumber, having had to read your comments.

      • Pablo Ricasso

Actually, I appreciate being warned about how the lens has an incredible amount of distortion and that the image is only somewhat corrected by using image robbing in camera software that only works in jpeg and not raw. The company made some of the best medium format lenses available and this is a disappointing surprise that I would not have expected, particularly the way everyone has been raving about the said quality of the system.

    • E

      Wow……

      Ummm wow…..

      Can someone help out here.

Subquality??……crap??? They are better than most of my nikkors.

      • Pablo Ricasso

What kind of nikkors are those? I haven’t shot the lens but I trust photozone and from what I can see it can be beat handily by any number of third party zooms. I also notice that the camera is using it’s computer to tweak away a substantial amount of light fall off that persists at all apertures.
That things not going in my collection like THAT.

        • matgay

yes but the non-aa sensor is superb – just the “native fuji lenses” that are crap. the fuji lenses’ image quality are comparabe with kit lenses. only buy if you are satisfied with mediocre quality, guess they had to hit a set price point. i would still buy the xpro for the sensor – but with an m-mount adapter and attach some leicas/zeiss ZM lenses.

but just dont know how i would manual focus it though. sony nex7 have focus assist over this.

Have any of you people ever used the camera or are you just parroting whatever sh!t you read off of Ken Rockwell. Like listening to a bunch of country hens clucking about something they know nothing about.

      • Mark

Actually Ken Rockwell’s review was posively glowing. Who knows what these knucklehead trolls are reading. I’m assuming they’re just jackasses.

        • Pablo Ricasso

WOW. If one had even read the conversation and were mentally competent then they would know exactly what the “knucklehead trolls” were reading. But I digress. 4.8% barrel distortion will be perfectly fine for YOUR photos. Buy two of them.

Don’t take things out of context next time. Here’s the final verdict from that article you linked to >>

The Fujinon XF 18mm f/2 R is certainly a cool little lens for the Fujifilm X-Pro mirrorless system. After all small is beautiful these days. However, performance-wise it is a bit of a mixed bag. The center performance is great throughout the mainstream apertures and the border quality is also very decent. However, the corner quality leaves something to be desired at f/2 and f/2.8. This may be acceptable given the typical applications at such large apertures though. The corner quality is technically pretty good at f/4 but due to some field curvature you should stop down to f/8 to achieve good results here. Lateral CAs are a bit on the high side. Same goes for the distortions which are fairly extreme when looking at the pure output of the lens but if you stick to camera JPEGs or the Fuji RAW converter this is taken care of for you (at cost of corner quality). While we didn’t really look deeper into the technical quality of the bokeh it seems to be quite nice based on what we have seen during the use in real life situations.

The build quality of the Fujinon is very high and it matches nicely with the Fujifilm X-Pro1. It still stays a little short of the carved-out-of-rock-like Leica quality but then we are also talking about a different price level here. A weakness of the Fuji system is certainly the speed of the AF which is slower compared to the state-of-the-art elsewhere. Given the optical performance the price tag is a little too high although the comparatively high speed and the pancake-style may ease some pain here.

They don’t strictly malign the lens for the reasons you do. And this is NOT new information. Fuji is not the only company making internal camera-based corrections for specific lens properties. And those same corrections can be made from RAW in post already using specific software.

The final results are what matter.

      • matgay

if i agree with u and say u r right, then the final results were 2.5-3.0 stars out of a possible 5.0 stars for image quality. that was a failing grade of “F” in high school.

  • matgay

final results = 2.5-3.0 stars of out 5.0 stars for image quality = failing grade

    • ChrisP

Matgay, I find it interesting that you decided to comment on the worse review of the three, instead of the excellent review of the 35 mm lens. Are you perhaps employed by one of the companies to which the Fuji system represents a significant threat?

      • matgay

yes i worked for fuji then defected to nex7 dept, but here are facts:

the image quality of fuji’s 35mm:
3.0-3.5 rating out of 5.0 (too ordinary)
the image quality of fuji’s 60mm:
4.0 rating out of 5.0 (decent)

as you know fuji is releasing a 14mm, and a 18-55mm. Both of which would be even HARDER to maintain distortions than the 18mm prime, thus the 18mm example is legit. …soooo it can only get worse from there. the in-camera correction can only get heavier. i shoot everything in RAW and hate camera correction. garbage in garbage out. if the image is already highly corrected, how would it look if you correct it further in post? why not fisheye every lens and then just post process it?

        • Pablo Ricasso

Well, that lens might BE a good fisheye, but let’s not start any new bad ideas…
And yeah, that camera does look nice.

  • Mistral75

On Fujifilm X-Pro1, the Leica Super-Elmar-M 18 mm f/3,8 Asph. doesn’t perform better than the Fujinon XR 18 mm f/2 R and the former is almost two stops slower.

Why this matgay character needs to troll every Fuij post is kind of creepy and sad, the guy is either completely obsessed with Fuji or is a troll-for-hire from a competing company. Either way, the Fuij X-Pro is an incredible camera with very impressive image quality, I have been using one for months now along side a 5Dmkiii, and wish I could drop the canon all together if it wasn’t for the fuji’s lack of video features.
