Fuji X100 is now discontinued, X200 coming at Photokina?

The online retailer Crutchfield has listed the Fujifilm X100 camera as discontinued on their website.

At the same time the price of the X100 dropped to $999 on Amazon. I am pretty confident that we will see a new X200 announced at Photokina this September (the X100 was announced during Photokina 2010).

    Wohh…

If X200 comes with great autofocus speed and probably slightly faster (f1.8 or even f1.4 :)) lens that would be amazing!

    • Donji Hogfan

How about a proper manual focus implementation?

Get rid of this fly by wire useless gimmick.

      • http://haroldellis4444@gmail.com Harold Ellis

feel sorry for those who helped fuji to spread developing costs and bought their beta version of real camera

        • shin

dont be cause its bloody brilliant camera. af speed is ok now. its done what it suppose to do compact street camera. if you want dslr speed then bring your dslr to work, sunday walk, dinner with friend. iam happy with my x100 more so than my omd and d7000.

          • http://shashinkaichiban1.wordpress.com Shashinka

I still use my X100 nearly daily as a second camera to my X-Pro1. I have no regrets about Fuji at all, nor do I see 18 months of ownership as “beta”. I prefer X100 to now retired D3s for street photography, or when I need be out of office for more than 6 hours straight.

        • Camerageekslayer

Glad to see your spreading your crap around to other forums Harold. For the last two years the X100 was universally lauded for it’s photo taking ability yet you deem it a beta. Another classic Haroldism! Where’s your friend Nobody Special?

          • http://haroldellis4444@gmail.com Harold Ellis

i know, you are one of those “i wanted retro looking camera and use it in auto mode” dudes.

not one of those old farts like me, wanting finally digital rangefinder.

    • Paul

      Sign me up!
Fuji has been doing some great things recently.
I’m also looking forward to the X-Pro 2.

      • http://photorumors.com PR admin

I agree, I am a big Fuji fan too.

  • dmd

All I’d like to see is faster focus speed. Love my X100.

  • santa

I hope there’ll be an X200 (make it rugged!) but could it just be that the X100 will be phased out, and from Photokina on the world will have to do with a 23mm lens for the X-Pro 1?

    • Rabi

Seems unlikely. The X100 has been a phenomenally popular camera, and phasing it out for a significantly more expensive model would be a terrible move on Fuji’s part. The X100 isn’t just a smaller X-Pro1; they are fundamentally different cameras.

  • Matthieu

Another great Fuji camera whose name will live on long after it has gone, like the F30.

  • ben

Please… distance scale on the lens, iso dial, no blade dancing, less button and a Q menu, moist proof, 16mpix. Same lens BUT better grip. plzzzzzzzzz

    • anon

I agree with that. after extensively using the X100, it’s a very good camera. things I would like to see that they (apparently) can’t get perfect with the X100 via firmware updates:

-better manual focusing, especially with some kind of highlight system like the Sony NEX cameras have
-better sensor. I still much prefer my film cameras to the fuji because the images feel more organic. I want less contrast but more dynamic range with the fuji, and I can get it in adobe raw, but not to the point that film is at. especially medium and large format.
-”full frame” sensor, 38mm lens. probably not gonna happen…
-dedicated ISO mechanism…maybe even a small display like the Contax G’s above the jog dial, you press the dial in and scroll with it to set the ISO. or a more classic approach.
-more rugged…the front lens element feels very fragile. the text on the buttons wears off. the exposure comp dial and shutter speed dial seem to have minds of their own.
-a real distance scale would be nice although the display one is decent.
-faster, with less BS. going between shooting and playback menus, switching viewfinders, etc. all should be faster.
-make recording movies actually useable – manual focus DURING video, maybe a building stabilizing element? better sound, better IQ @720, etc.

I’m probably going to wait. I love the X100. I’m more concerned with the image quality getting better than anything else.

  • http://facebook.com/Fricetix Fricetix

X200 needs this to be successful:
    1) Faster AF
    2) Manual Focus that is actually useable

Now optionally this would be nice too:
    - Faster lens – F1.4 would be nice :D
    - More MPixels – at least 15

It would be also AWESOME if they put a full-frame sensor with real 35mm in it. That would improve SNR (singal to noise ratio which is quality), allow higher resolution without losing quality compared to the current APS-C in X100 and it will give you more DoF control. That would also be the first FF mirrorless and that would be a huge selling point. Fuji, please do it :D

We need FF mirrorless. Fuji, please listen to the people around the world.

    That was my $0.02
    David.

    • http://facebook.com/Fricetix Fricetix

One more thing. A DoF scale would be very useful. :D

    • aanon

Leica M9 beat ya to that……

  • SLRist

If they’re going to improve MF, then focus peaking is essential, otherwise it’s a total waste of time.

Personally, I couldn’t care less about MF. Just improve AF.

    • Shigzeo

I’d much rather a 100% window that can be moved around. Rather than ruining tr entire image with focus peaking, keep the optical framing and use the hybrid finder to overlay a user-set magnification. That, or use the AF sensor to implement a digital rangefinder with matching images. Anything but focus peaking which works in a pinch but absolutely ruins framing.

      • http://haroldellis4444@gmail.com Harold Ellis

        why ruining?
focus peaking and zebra have been essential features in fast documentary cameras since ever and people are still forgiving such feature in “modern” EVF powered cams?

it is good to see that the recession is over and world overall have such strong buying power on toys, but i would prefer that global market gives the companies strong feedback about that they should do their homework better.
but yea, what do i care. fools and their moneys… have been always like that. better spent then on tobacco or women.

      • anon

that’s an interesting idea. personally I’d rather have a real rangefinder, but a digital overlay on the optical viewfinder sounds cool.

  • Andy

The X100 is a great camera but certainly not perfect.

Stuff I’d like to see but probably won’t:
    1) Smaller size
    2) Weather sealing
    3) Tiltable flash (like the RX100)
    4) Electronic cable release or even wireless (I hate manual cable releases)
    5) Improved optics
    6) 1/3 stop aperture control ON the aperture dial.
    7) face detection AF
    8) dedicated ISO Dial

    Stuff I expect to see:
    1) Higher res sensor
    2) Higher res screen and/or viewfinder
    3) Faster AF
    4) More responsive in general

  • shin

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
another BIG hole in my pocket, x100 is my favorite camera more than my d7000 and my omd.

  • mythbuster

If if has good manual focusing with in viewfinder focus peaking and a more luminous lens (in the tele end), it will be difficult not to buy.

  • mythbuster

Sorry, I was thinking of a zoom lens camera and this is not the case. I want to say a more luminous lens will be welcome…

  • grumps

I seriously doubt they have improved their Autofocus. In fact, they will probably go with increased MPs and better higher ISO which is normal for sensor technology evolution. Biggest problem for me, is that it will still be effectively 35mm and not 50mm!

    • http://photorumors.com PR admin

I don’t see a reason why they won’t improve the AF speed – the technology is already out there. I think they will use the sensor from the X-Pro1 in the X200. I don’t think they will add true manual focus – it will still be focus by wire.

  • hopeful

Please Fuji, make a FF mirrorless!!!!!!!!!!!!
    This is my dream.

  • goose

hope it’s an “analog” manual focus

  • Camaman

Why do most of you think there will be X200?
My guess is a another cheaper X interchangable is where they are going…
And the anouncement of a fast 35mm eq lens.

    • http://shashinkaichiban1.wordpress.com shashinka

I think that too. Think whatever replaces X100 will use all new XF-mount lenses. Maybe kit camera for use new zoom lenses. Low price X-Pro1.

  • coz

Good riddance! Maybe the new one will focus properly? Also manually?

  • Ke

There’s no way it’ll be FF – no matter how much people wish.

We’ll probably see slight improvements like we did from Leica’s X1 to X2, but nothing revolutionary.

I just want better firmware so the bugs are gone & it doesn’t take an age to buffer or start up, improved AF – what’s been done in the NEXs would be great, & half-decent MF. Then I’ll buy one.

  • http://Amitmay.com/sp.htm AM*shoots*SF

There is virtually no chance they will drop the format- a fixed lens camera- to make a cheap interchangeable. Why would they when the x100 is such an iconic camera? They should also keep the same name, x100; maybe make it a mark II. They have built such a successful brand so fast. When Mazda was successful with the miyata sports coup they kept the basic design intact for years. Same with the revised mini cooper. Fuji would be idiots if they drop the x100.

I expect body to be virtually the same. Probably reconfigure buttons on the back- drop the useless rocker switch and add a Q button (thank god they modified the current SW so the useless raw button is now customizable.)

Personally I’d like the shutter to be faster and w/o delay. The new Sony rx100 has a leaf shutter and no delay, why can’t the x100? To me, thats the biggest problem shooting street- there is shutter delay even in manual focus! I’d also like a battery meter that actually works. I’m sure they will incrementally improve the sensor and autofocus too (to me those are less important, as the output is excellent as is.) the only way I’d consider shooting street with AF is if a) it’s virtually instantaneous and b) there is excellent face recognition. Otherwise zone focusing works well for my purposes.

I’ll probably sit this revision out. Who knows, the original x100 may be the next classic cult digital camera like digilux 2 or epson rd-1. Only time will tell!

  • jojo

Hoping for a major redesign of the manual focus system. Please drop the electronic crap. It doesn’t belong on a $1200 piece of machinery.

  • Dummy00001

    My list to Fuji is:

    - Improve AF.
    - Do NOT increase the MP count. 12MP is plenty for such camera.
    - Add image stabilization.
    - Fix the quirks/Run few more rounds of real-world QA before release.
    - Add a built-in lens cap (lesser known, but IMO killer feature for any smallish camera with fixed lens).
    - Add weather sealing.

    • pooh

It’s bound to be 16MP. Not that they are increasing the MP count beyond “plenty for such camera”, they just have to use the newer Sony sensor…to transfer it from the D90 to the D7000.

      • Dummy00001

        > It’s bound to be 16MP.

But, on the blogs, we are allowed to wish :)

    • Ash

Yes, weahter sealing and IBIS are the killer features to add. With those it becomes the perfect travel camera.

The sensor is almost certianly going to be the 16mp x trans from the X Pro 1.

I would alos like to see them add the control panel and film emualitons from the X Pro.

  • Nq

Nobody ever mention it so I will. What about a bi-focal lens ? That’s our wish with a photographer friend of mine

    • http://haroldellis4444@gmail.com Harold Ellis

pocketable fake TLR with EVF would be awesome. One lens 35, one 105 and i would sell my house for it lol

  • nycPete

I just picked up one on Craigslist for $500. so far so good. its a great camera to keep in the car glove compartment.

  • Sterno

    Dear Santa:
incorporate the Q button of the X-Pro and make it customizable-better sensor- improved menu structure, improved manual focus & AF, 35 MM F1.4 lens, Last-looking at the poor QC on the x10- I hope Fuji has learned from their mistakes- this x200 (or what ever its called) can really be an affordable low end Leica’esk. Which I believe the X100 already is- I am sure the Leica brain trust has learned a lesson from x100′s leading Hybrid viewfinder. Last-being they are very good marketers, I would not be surprised if they release a premium black only in the fall for $$premium cost…

  • http://twitter.com/mkrigsman Michael Krigsman

The x200 will not ship until late this year at the earliest; more likely in the first quarter of 2013. In addition, Fuji will announce a lower-end camera, probably between the x10 and x100. They will not announce an X-Pro1 replacement at this coming Photokina.

    i love my x 100….

now an x100n or mark ll as was said ,……….. now af is passable with the firmware fixes , but a little faster still and surer in low light please……..buttons that dont wear off in 2 months in the new model please,………… a dedicated 2x sliding element[similar to the nd filter] to provide 70mm fov mapped to a real button button for portrait use………..a more robust battery,……….a sanely priced black body option would be nice ………12mp is fine, but advance the art on the already very good high iso noise properties in the new camera………. the mf should have a finite throw like the 12mm olympus m4\3 lens with distance scale like that fine lens
beef up the cheesey buttons and rear wheel, a blot on the otherwise fine build
the embarassingly cheap strap lugs and too small rings are sawing thru on my camera…this needs to be addressed the size and layout are near perfect so what ever you do fuji, dont undo what you actually got right ,
and lastly , pretty please, an option to see the composed image in mf mode without that overbearing and near useless strip of bogus distance information cluttering the lcd and evf display that cannot be turned off!!!

It won’t be full frame, that will come in a couple of years as part of the x pro system.
It may have x pro 1 sensor and Q menu.
It will have improved AF and will hopefully have improved manual focus with focus peaking.
Design will be similar, lens probably the same. Some weather sealing would be good.
Not much else will change. General responsiveness needs some improvement.

  • TaoTeJared

If Fuji really wanted to mess with everyone they would release the X200 with a 50mm 1.4 lens. I would pick that up in a heartbeat and then have a 35 & 50 there. Add the Wide angle converter and a 1.7x tele converter for the 50 (85mm) and your bag is set.

I’m still surprised so many want MF. I don’t get it. If I want that I just set it at F8 @ 8 feet and let the camera do everything else. MF is not fun for sure. The AF is much improved but you have to have the settings correct for it to work at optimal speed.

Not sure if I would pick a new one up or not. If it had the new sensor, AF was lightning fast, and/or was a 50mm 1.4 I probably would. Otherwise, there is really not much else I need or really want.

That is assuming they would update the menu system to the Xpro’s system. Kicking the FPS up and better buffer would be really nice and assumed as well.

    • http://luisdafos.weebly.com/ Luis

I don´t think it will be a 50mm version. That would be nice, but then, why to discontinue the X100 and it´s successful 35? I guess (and hope) they will just keep the same same lens (may be and improved-faster version) and add the sensor on the X-pro1 plus better af, Q button and stuff, but same layout, same concept. The kit you propose would be awesome but I don´t think we will see it for a while…
      Anyway, there´s rumours also about two new X cameras. 1) 35mm X100 II and 2)… ?
