First images of the upcoming Sony NEX-6 and NEX-5R mirrorless cameras

Those are the first leaked images of the upcoming Sony NEX-6 and NEX-5R mirrorless cameras (see expected specs here) - the new models have similar design to the NEX-7 and NEX-5N:

They really need to make more pancake lenses for these cameras.

Wouldn’t mind seeing some good lenses instead of a hundred new bodies… but then again, it’s my fault for expecting Sony to not do what they’re doing right now.

16-50 panckake zoom, 11-18 zoom, and 35mm F1.8 will also be announced with these cameras ..

A 35 1.8′s better than nothing but we need a better wide than the 16 2.8 and something smaller than the 24 1.8. The 16 was good enough at first but seeing how Sony’s releasing more bodies than lenses when the existing lineup of lenses could use much improvement, it’s obvious that they have their priorities mixed up. Seriously, I’m sure more people would jump on the Nex line if there were nicer and more usable lenses. There’s very little difference between the lower-end bodies like the 3, 5, C3, 5N, F3, etc. sheesh.

I have a Nex-5 and the 16 2.8 and I’m planning on getting the EOS M with the 22/2 pancake just for the lens. YMMV.

But a smaller lens would compromise the quality of the 24mm, which already is pushing the limits already with not so exciting borders (as a 35mm Zeiss for the Canon or Nikon mounts)

Besides, quality before form, I prefer that a million times. You say that the 16mm was good enough at first, but not now. In reality, it was never good enough because outside of the central circle, everything else is very smudgy. Now add that to the 5n, 5R, 7 and 6 cameras and it becomes a dog of a lens. If the 16mm was f2 and sized similarly to the 24mm, I would buy it in a heartbeat and, as you can see the still rare availability of the 24mm, many people buy it. In the grand scheme of things, NEX will become a quality set up with quality lenses and not just a pocket cam upgrade (thanks to the now introduction of the RX100)

No… a smaller lens wouldn’t compromise the quality. If microFourThirds can have the 12/2 which has the same field of view as the E 16 2.8, have a larger relative aperture and still produce sharper images, I see absolutely no reason why Sony can’t make a f/2.8 lens just as good if not better. And it would be smaller too because f/2.8 vs. f/2.

Also, microlenses have improved in the Nex line since the original 3 and 5 so I’ve seen the same Nex lenses perform better. Of course you can say the 16 was “never good enough”… dare you to name a lens that can’t be improved :)

    huh

Whinge whinge to the comments above… Sony know that people will use len’s from other companies with an adaptor. Go buy a Canon FD 24mm or 28mm etc and look at the results. Or use Leica glass. There are more len choices out there than camera bodies.

    • Arturo

Seriously?, so what’s the point of improving the autofocus system in the 5R? also if the whole point of the NEX system is to use other companies lenses then why the magenta fringing with wide angle lenses on most bodies?. The NEX are great little camera bodies, but a poor system.

Sony seems to aim a what gives them more money. There are less serious enthusiasts that will buy many lenses than compact upgraders without a clue about lenses who thinks all they need is the longest zoom range possible. The result is that you will be able to buy 8 different bodies but only 7 mostly average performing lenses.

The wide angle is the worst area here, with no good lens on the system and very problematic third party options.

        See photozone.de

They tested several of lenses for the NEX system with poor results.

        Same for X-Pro1.

So Sony and Fuji has to develope better sensors for wide angle lenses.
Their own wides give also poor results…

      Do you mean like this?

It’s fun to play with but what I need is a large sensor compact that fits in my back pocket (like the Nex 5 and the 16 pancake already does) and can take casual photos in relatively low light. I’m only complaining because every other manufacturer has come out with decent wide pancakes and Sony doesn’t care.

Putting Leica or Voigtlander lenses on a current mirrorless body doesn’t make a big-boy camera. You’d still be an APS-C noob if you think it’s a serious camera. And all those lenses give better IQ on FF Leica and Voigtlander bodies anyway LOL

    • jake

no, most people use native glass for any mount , I used to do like you suggested but I quickly found Leica or VM mount Voiklanders useless on NEX cameras because of terrible magenta and cyan fringes on the corners.
plus, it is time for us to get some good digital optimized glass.
and I want to get a mid range prime as good as the Oly 45mmf1.8 and 75mmf1.8.

Look at what Samsung is doing! Same sensor size and a lot of very good, affordable and in case of the 16mm, 20mm and 30mm small glas!

Their 60mm Macro is a very nice lens and the sony 30mm Macro is a lot of crap and look at the 50-200, which is smaller, cheaper, faster and better performing than sonys offering!

I like the NEX-5 of my father very much but wouldn’t trade his lenses for my NX collection!

    • bas076

NX 50-200 is wider and heavier then sony’s 55-210 and there is no some thing even close to sel – 50/1.8 oss. 30mm without stab not interesting not from NX nor from sony.

Interesting that the NEX-6 has an actual PASM mode dial, unlike all (?) of the other NEX bodies.

Also, I’m not super familiar with Sony/Minolta but is that a new hotshoe? It almost looks like a standard hotshoe with a multi-pin socket at its backstop rather than the non-standard sony/minolta shoe.

I do like the idea of the pin socket at the shoe backstop instead of what some others have done (Oly, Panasonic, etc.) with the accessory socket in front of the shoe where it requires some back panel space.

    • http://genotypewritings.blogspot.com genotypewriter

The Nex 7 has two dials… for those who like lots and lots of mechanical controls that you can accidentally change.

True… the shoe looks different. It’s almost as if Sony changed the E/Nex team from the original one to the ones who’re doing the Alpha A/DSLR/DSLT bodies who’re obsessed with coming up with useless stuff.

I produced NEX-6 from an image of NEX-7.
