No new Samsung NX cameras this year

Some interesting points from a recent AP interview with Samsung Digital Imaging Sales and Marketing Vice President SH Lim after the announcement of the Galaxy Android camera:

  • Future Samsung Galaxy cameras will feature a larger sensor if consumers demand it.
  • Samsung may extend Android technology to the NX system cameras.
  • Samsung will continue to offer cheaper Wi-Fi enabled low-end compact cameras.
  • Samsung will not announce any new NX cameras this year.
  • In the future Samsung will concentrate on compact system cameras, not DSLRs, however the company doesn't rule out future alliance with other DSLR companies.
  • It took Samsung one year to develop the Galaxy Android camera that is assembled in China.

    Oh boy…

I had some hope for Samsung, I guess it’s not going to be this year. But this may be good, I think they are rethinking their strategy. Samsung has delivered some variety of lenses – when compared to Sony’s E-Mount – but what have been lacking is good quality cameras.

Samsung’s NX cameras don’t exceed in any particular area and even lacks some things. It has some lags, it takes too much time to buffer, the IQ is not that good and for me, most of all, they are expensive when compared to cameras in the same category.

I thought they would come with a pro NX camera this year, something like NX1, but it seems that after NEX-7, Fuji XPRO1, Olympus OM-D E-M5 and more to come, Samsung is rethinking how they should approach the market.

I would say to price it in a more competitive way, correct this hardware/software flaws, the AF has to be quick, the IQ on par with other APS-C cameras, better buffer, no lag whatsover, etc. Keep releasing the lenses because they are doing a good job on that, at least in variety of fast primes.

With the NEX-6, GH3 and Fuji X-E1 things are getting worst for Samsung. If Sony can release that rumored 35mm f/1.8 and announce some other prime like a 85mm f/1.4~1.8, for portrait, the NEX system starts to get interesting because their cameras already are. GH3 needs better DR, colors and IQ, can Panasonic deliver it? Fuji won’t get better video, but it should get better AF/MF, just wished that the old lenses are able to take advantage of that a well.

    Not surprised.

The NX system is pretty much a dead end.

Competition is so fierce right now, and now that Canon, Sony, and Fuji have raised their game, not sure why anyone would buy a Samsung NX system.

The technology has moved forward so fast. We have phase-detction on sensor right now, Fuji has moved beyond simple bayer sensors, Sony is introducing RGBW sensors, etc. It takes a lot of money to be fighting in this arena.

At the compact end, a lot of people are just using their cellphones. Which folks think seem to be ‘good enough’. Right now, you really have to work hard to justify your existence as a camera maker and Samsung has fallen short on this.

I have been hearing that since the last year.
Samsung announced the NX20, NC210 and NX1000 few months ago but now because there is not another camera for this year (just 4 months) Samsung NX is dead… amazing…

Samsung is missing the all important holiday season. I think there is a very deliberate reason why Sony, Canon, Fuji, et al have announced new mirrorless products to be released in the next few months.

You mention the NX20. The camera is the perfect example of why Samsung is failing.

You have a $1,000+ camera, its an over-priced camera with mediocre features. Video is stuck at 30p (cheaper Sony cameras half the price already hit 60p), image quality doesn’t beat cheaper cams, low-light and dynamic range aren’t any better than any other camera, lenses aren’t as good as the competition. There is not a single thing about the camera that would justify the purchase.

Its a camera only Koreans would buy.

Wow, you dont sound biased. Actually the lenses are quite good for the price, unlike the sony shite lenses. so lets not be overly dramatic, samsung does have a tech problem with the cameras and their prices are too high, but the image quality isnt as bad as you make out and the lenses are heck of alot better in terms of price performance wise than most. I aint gonna fork out 500 for some panny pancake lens when i can get a samsung one for 199 sale. its about the pocket book as well, screw the best iso crap,i dont need to shoot mice in dark pubs at iso 10000000.

I wait until Samsung brings a decent cameraphone. Maybe the next NX line will bring a mix between a smartphone and a compact system camera :-)
