The rumored new Tamron lens that will be announced on November 7th will be a replacement for the current 200-500mm f/5-6.3 ($949). Next week Tamron will only announce the development of the lens, the official release and the pricing will revealed in 2014 (probably in Q4). The new lens will have an increased zoom range (150-500mm?) and will feature Vibration Compensation (VC) technology (the current 200-500mm doesn't have VC). Tamron already filed a patent for a 150-600mm f/5-6.3 lens.

I’m not trying to blame Photo Rumours for faithfully reporting the scuttlebutt.

But c’mon Tamron. A 12-month pre-announcement for a slow zoom lens that’s really more of a refresh? I pity the interns who get sent to this press conference. Don’t eat the donuts… they might be weeks old themselves.

They must think this very “pre” pre-annoncement will get people to hold off buying an existing lens from the competition. Sad if true.

This rumour is the announcement that we think there’s going to be an announcement that they might be releasing a lens sometime in the distant future.

The illustration could be wrong. There is no way a 200mm/f5 (wide end) lens has a diameter of this big. A 200-500/f/2.8-f/6.3 is more reasonable.

Obviously you know more about lens design than the engineers at tamron.

If they double the price for adding range and VC, I won’t be bothered that Tamron do not release lenses for the K mount.

good point, I have forgotten about that patent

It was in the “Related posts” ;)

600mm f5.6 would likely weight 3kg based on other similar lenses (Pentax 600mm f5.6). That combined with the longer focal length means this lens is not handholdable. I don’t consider this a replacement for the 200-500mm or a direct competitor with the Sigma 50-500mm.

Are you sure about that? I thought the 600mm/5.6 Pentax was a “645 lens”? Doesn’t format also dictate weight?

    Hey, I guessed right!! =)

I guessed it was the 200-500… that they’d be adding VR, because the current version without VR/IS is on sale at Amazon right now.

Its a good price at around $900, but the Sigma 50-500 OS is probably as good or better for around $1500. So they really do need to update this puppy.

I hope they make it brighter at the tele-end, because this is pretty dark right now, considering its not even a 3x zoom.
