White, ultra-wide, small, cheap. Guaranteed to be a success.

9mm on 1″ is not ultra-wide, it is 24 mm equivalent, as a lot of kit lenses out there (including the tiny Panasonic 12-32 zoom). And it is not even faster than those zooms. Fail.

I assume 24mm is the border of “ultrawide”, starting from which the perspective distortion begin to take serious impact. Maybe I’m too old to consider it otherwise, I’m still in the ’50s when 35mm is considered “wide” and 28mm is as much as you get.

The thing is small, and is marketed toward the selfie users, who don’t care how “fast” a lens is. It just has to be white. If you have any idea how the (ridiculous priced and poor-speced) Casio Tryx/TR series sells in Asia you’ll have an idea of what I actually mean…

But Nikon has the S1, which goes for $280 (compared to $450 for the Samsung with same sensor size) with the very small 11-27 kit lens. And they have a 10mm f/2.8 (faster than this Samsung 9mm). So I don’t see any reason at all to get this Samsung.

Nikon S1 is old. Battery life less than half, no tilt screen that can flip 180 deg. The 11-27 is big compared to Samsungs lenses. 20mp vs 14mp and wifi. Plenty of reasons to get this.

Specs are rather irrelevant here, I would say. Few would have any idea of what is an aperture (which is half stop faster on the Nikon one but the lens is narrower. Remember the ad above along the flip screen encouraging selfie use) to begin with. Marketing plays 80% part in this segment, especially in (East) Asia – as I said in my last post.

Perhaps I should have added “in certain parts of the world” to the “success” in my first post. They are investing into two different sensor sizes – like Sony, but with different lenses. It’s weird but they have the cash to burn – this part marginally better than Sony, who could take no more losses. Let’s see how Samsung play this out

  • preston

If anybody buys this for kit for $450 then Nikon will know for sure that their marketing strategy is to blame for the lack of Nikon 1 system sales (especially the J and S lines).

when Samsung 16-50mm F2.0-2.8 came out?

“9mm f/3.5 prime lens will be bundle with the sales package”

Stupidest POS possible. Even the old $300 Pana LX7 shreds it to pieces.
