i see a lot of happy Pentax users waiting for this

  • Spy Black

November? They really know how to torture their user base.

    • Licheus

Well people been waiting for 14 years, guess a few months more won’t hurt much.

      • MdB

Yes, but how long have Ricoh taken to do it? Not long.

        • Zos Xavius

          This

Mine was mostly a joke, but they did announce that camera way prematurly if you ask me.

Ten months from they announced they develop a FF camera to release just makes us plan better (skip the K-3 II). They said “at the end of the year” so we knew the time frame all from the first message. There is no delays as we know of yet.

Beyond that, it makes people like me start planning. I’m a Nikon guy and super unhappy. I’ve been waiting for a new body I like but it doesn’t exist yet. Perhaps this Pentax knocks it out of the park first try like Nikon did with the D3. If so, maybe I don’t just ‘settle’ for another Nikon that comes close, but isn’t for me.

Also, I don’t expect to buy the first one, but maybe I hold out for a year or two till 3rd parties get in on the Pentax action and help make it viable. Pentax currently has the best value IMO in the industry. Maybe they release something amazing and cheap just to get market share.

I believe the Pentax FF actually is two models from the start. One lower end that matches or just surpases 6DN, D600 and A7 on specs, but at 20% lower price. The top model will have all the bells and whistles at the price of Df and 5DIII.

I’m curious as to why you’re unhappy with your Nikon.

I need high fps because I need the entire sequence (action sports) and 8fps is the absolute minimum. Any less and a board can rotate enough between frames that you can’t tell exactly what happened from frame to frame. I still use a D300 for that because it’s 8fps, but it’s glitchy now and can’t recognize NMH batteries so I have to use disposables, which I don’t like. It’s also terrible beyond ISO 1000 and is 12mp etc. I’m not spending $6,000 to jump to 16mp @ 11fps since I don’t like 16mp, and there is no flip screen. I shoot a lot of low angle stuff and a flip screen is awesome. I also shoot table top product stuff from a tripod and I’m short so I can’t see the back of my screen properly without a stool. I also sometimes shoot overhead, and live view sucks when you are looking at the screen at a 150 degree angle, ya know? The D4 is aging and is 16mp, with a fixed screen. The D810 is too slow and has no tilt screen, plus it’s just uncomfortable in my hands. The D610 and D750 have a slow sync speed and only hits 1/4000 sec shutter speed. I use 1/8000 often when I’m outside and opening up the aperture. I don’t always want to have to fiddle with a variable ND, especially if swapping lenses. I also will use 1/8000 for action if it’s bright sun out. A dirtbike’s spokes are different at 1/4000 vs 1/8000. I’m not bringing a lighting kit do a dirt track. The D750 is also has the same cheap plastic mirror box the D610 has. Trust me, I’ve broken the mount off after dropping the body with a 70-200 from about 1 foot. That wouldn’t happen on my D300.

There are other nitpicks as well. Basically, Nikon has features in different cameras I like, but nothing that checks off all the buttons for me. I want 20-24mp, tilt screen, 1/8000, 1/250sync, 9fps or higher. 4K would be nice, but it’s not a deal breaker for me. 4K basically gives you reduced resolution (8mp), compressed 24fps sequences. The D810 would be okay if it had high fps in crop mode but Nikon won’t give it the firmware, plus it’s an aging camera too since it’s basically a D800. It’s also not the best in low light. And no tilt screen. And I’m not a fan of the ergonomics. I’m one of the few who actually uses all the features I whine about. I’d pay damn near any price if my dream camera existed. I’m not knocking Nikons current stuff, but they just haven’t hit the sweet spot for me since the D300 (although even back then it pissed me off nobody had tilt screens because I came over from the video world where they’d existed on $300 video cams for ages by that point.). It’s 2015 and much of what’s come is subpar compared to what’s possible. Ergonomics too. Burying the CLS settings, which Nikon wants you to use, in the menu below things you’ll only set once and forget, is brain dead. The ergonomics of the cameras is pathetic. I also like where Pentax puts the camera mount button. It can be pressed with your right hand so you don’t even have to move the camera from your eye to change lenses.

I really think Pentax has the chance to knock one out of the park here like Nikon did with the D3. If so, then I’ll be first in line. I had a K10D back in the day (still do, actually), and it blew away what Canikon had at the same price point. I’ve been hoping Pentax would step up their game and go pro. Hopefully they will.

Sorry for the novel Frank, but you asked 😉

          • Frank

Thanks. Always interesting to read how people use their gear.

      Closer to November.

  • jojo

“Please don’t leave me, I can change, I promise….Just give me another 6 months, and I’ll tell you what I’m going to do…. I promise…”

    Be realistic, just leave him/her!

    • MdB

Well Pentax is finally owned by someone who cares about him/her, this has made a big difference in a short space of time considering.

  • TinusVerdino

They’ll probably announce it in halfway September and it’ll start shipping in November.

    • Neopulse

      Just in time before xmas
