Canon wants to be the #2 mirrorless camera manufacturer, will “ship a lot of mirrorless products” at the end of 2016

In a recent interview with the Japanese website, Canon President of Marketing Sakata Masahiro confirmed that they are planning to "ship a lot of mirrorless products" in the third and fourth quarter of 2016. This means a possible new Canon mirrorless camera announcement for Photokina (September). Canon has ambitions to take the second spot in the mirrorless market (currently they are at #3 after Olympus and Sony). Interestingly enough, Nikon is also rumored to announce a new mirrorless system in late 2016/early 2017.

Canon recently filed a patent in Japan for a 50mm f/3.5 Macro IS lens designed for a full frame mirrorless camera.

  • If you bring quality and innovation, you can, it’s just that it hasn’t been Canon’s motto lately, but hopefully they can change that for good. The more competition the better.

I’m sure Nikon is indeed planning on having something around the same time. Canon and Nikon seem to be on very similar timelines in recent years.

I’ll need a replacement for nx1 by 2018-19 with 8k, 4k@120fps, high speed burst, perfect af and today’s ff dr and iq in apsc sensor with specific apsc lenses at the price that was of nx1 at launch (or lower). Who’ll be able to achieve this first?

8K is 32MP motion picture. you are looking at 800Mbps bit rate. My 128GB card can only shoot 20minutes T-T. Also, my i7 4770 barely plays 4k at 200Mbps, hope you have a CPU 4x as strong in 2 years 😉

I have a 5820@4.4ghz. 6 cores (12 with hyperthreading). And when 8k gets mainstream, we’ll have gpu to decode it.

And nx1 does 4k@80mb/sec thx to h.265. So 8k can be about 320mb/sec. Nothing incredible.

Why not #1? I’m sure that Canon knows how to saturate market with a lot of crap.

    • Sean

They sure do, just look at how they screwed up the G1X II, then the G7X, G9X, and G3X. Oh wait, the Canonites are still amazed on each release and even better actually bought them. LOL

    • Jeff

You know what? If Canon actually released a very decent mirrorless, they could very well be #1. If the EOS-M made them 3rd, nothing is impossible. I actually believe they’ll become #1 if they can get something in the likes of the A6000 and the A7xx.

      • Tsais

Especially if they fix the a6300 and A7xx problems.

  • ZZ

WTF, Canon … #2? … seriously? … thought you were the 800 lb. gorilla … SONY musta ate your lunch … talk about aiming high …

  • Jeffry De Meyer

    aren’t compact cameras mirrorless?

    • Cinekpol

By mirrorless they mean compact mirrorless cameras, a specific type of bodies, not compacts, astrophotography CCD sensors, or nor any other gear that doesn’t have a mirror between lens and a sensor.

  • It doesn’t say by when Canon wants to achieve this. 2025?

  • MonkeySpanner

Then canon better come with something more interesting than the EOS M system. I mean they might sell a lot just because they are giving them away – but they need something….better.

The future is now, not September.

  • Jón Ingólfur Hermannsson

Samsung said they wanted to be the leaders :). And now out of the business. Canon will need to make a lots of lenses as few bodies will not cut it
Sony has made a lot of A7 bodies but just now releasing few more but pro lenses which are very cocky Their best seller has been the a6000 with a slim lens selection which shows that the biggest seller price point is below $1000.
So something for Canon to think about So far canon has not been impressive

Canon could easily take the no 1 place if they’re serious about mirrorless. They didn’t and still don’t. I don’t understand why they’re so protective about DSLR when in reality mirrorless costs less(higher margin).

  • PizzaKing

    good luck

  • Mikhail

Do I have it right that Fujifilm is behind Canon in the mirrorless camera manufacturers list? I am rediscovering the amazing world of statistics every day.

  • wonderdude

Probably only if they introduce a mirrorless full-frame EF mount camera…
