Some of the interesting sensor presentations from the 2011 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference are from Sony and Samsung:
"23.9 A 1/2.33-inch 14.6M 1.4μm-Pixel Backside-Illuminated CMOS Image Sensor with Floating Diffusion Boosting by Samsung
23.11 A 17.7Mpixel 120fps CMOS Image Sensor with 34.8Gb/s Readout by Sony"

Cue speculation on Sony’s a700 replacement in 5…4…3…2…
I was really hoping to hear about new advancements in CCD sensors and the next generation of Nikons would be CCD.
Sorry, but sometimes you are a bit too technical and literal — can you please explain “Why” something is interesting, not just make lists. I think we come here for your interpretation on developments, not just to read a list of developments without any explanation of why its important to pay attention to.
Example: Most people wont know why they should care at all about to the two sensors you listed, because you didn’t offer any education or interpretation. And that will also be why a majority of readers will just gloss over this post instead of feeling interested at all. Facts are important, but interpretation is invaluable.
I though that just listing the specs will be sufficient – the interesting parts are the two characteristics: 1.4μm pixel size from Samsung and 120fps from Sony. I will start adding more detailed description/interpretation in the future, while still trying to keep the posts short.
120fps sounds amazing. The 120MP by Canon and now this
Yes 17mpix is not even over the top.. beeing bit lower mpix than the 7d sensor allways sounds good in my head. (less processing magic needed) potential for cleaner iso like the D7000 proves
