I remember buying my first crop frame DSLR lens, a rather fine Tamron 17-50/2.8, some 5 or 6 years ago. Technology has moved on a lot since then and the the replacement model sports image stabilisation.

What’s the use of a slow, non-fixed aperture 18-50 DX these days? Except for a cheap and nasty kit lens to use as a temporary lens cap for a new camera body? Ah, that’s what Sigma must have in mind, but at a high price and a low resolution.

Thats true…but talking about the 17-50mm…the VC version is worse than the original…according to some reviews….and i do agree the OS in this lens should be included, unless the lens is only for Oly users….lol

That’s extremely interesting… Not the lens itself, of course, but the fact that it is clearly a kit lens. This might be an indication that Sigma is contemplating making a MILC. Would make sense, since they already have most of the experience needed from their DP range.

Oh boy, here comes the official “useless day” on the internet. Who’s running these websites, kids who like to celebrate April Fools Day? It’s gonna be a long 24 hours….

They should rather give us some decent MFT lenses.

I don’t understand. Who needs another one? Without IS? I can’t even imagine it to be meant for a system of their own. Sigma doesn’t seem to have the resources to do that. Considering the time they need between announcement and production of their camera’s.

I’d rather see them filling the gap of primes. A set of F2.0 lenses (28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, 135mm) would be nice.

Sigma have always had strategic aspirations to be more than an OEM or brand of third party lenses. They need to offer a stratified brand encompassing not only a full system, but a range of systems. They need to make the most out of Foveon.

If they want to make a mirrorless camera, they will probably have to come up with their own standard. A 4/3 sensor costs a lot to develop, Sony wouldn’t allow a totally non-Sony E-system and why join Samsung (assuming Samsung would let them)? No, the cheapest way is to take a DP and add a mount and a zoom lens.

I am surprised at the lens, though (hopefully Admin is kidding). A less sensitive sensor needs a brighter lens. No doubt it will have a shorter register than Leica M.

Wow, another crappy slow kit lens. Thanks Sigma. Just what everyone wants.

I can’t tell if this is an April Fools joke or just a really bad Japanese to English translation.

If it is real, then this has to be a kit lens for an forthcoming Sigma camera, since the specs are to low to be an upgrade to anything.
