RED EPIC-M now in stock; EPIC-X delayed, price increased

Jim Jannard announced that the EPIC-M is now in stock. EPIC-X is delayed, some prices went up as a result of the tragedy in Japan:

  • There is no waiting if you want to buy an EPIC-M starting Thursday, July 14th. Supply is limited. EPIC-Ms have a 2 year warranty.
  • The EPIC-M program has helped us tune up for beginning EPIC-X production late August and full swing production early September.
  • Given the tragedy in Japan, EPIC-X production was delayed. The other side effect is that prices of many things have gone up. Given this, we are announcing a price increase on some items that will take effect on January 1st, 2012. If you have your order and deposit in before Dec. 31, 2011 you will get the old price. I kind of feel sorry for those guys that put down early deposits for stage 2 Epic-X, fully expecting to be the first people in the world to own and rent them… Now anyone and there dog (with $58k!) can jump the queue.

No one will say it on REDuser, of course…. “price rises… great! wow! you’re the best company ever”

What exactly is the difference between the “X” brain and the “M” brain? It must be substantial given the cost difference.

Also, do they provide any mount you want for the stated price?

And, most importantly, what does a whole, operable, ready to shoot camera, less glass cost?

I understand the modularity and its flexibility for varying configurations but it also makes it tough to understand what actual “on top of the tripod” cost is.

I can’t figure out the difference between X and M – not from looking at their web site, anyway.

Total cost sans lenses would go something like this:

        Body
        + Display (and cable)
        + Media
        + Power
        + Rail
+ Lens mount (if necessary – F mount is $500)

There is no difference as far as I now in terms of specs between the Epic-M and Epic-X brains. The M simply is hand made (M standing for hand Machined). The X is the mass produced version. They decided to produce the M to roll out the Epic faster instead of waiting to tool up the facotry for the X brain.

    Hahahaha…. Red.

    Guys,

There is no difference in specs between an “M” and an “X” – the main difference is that it’s “machined” (hence the M) versus being made on a traditional production line.

The premium for the M was basically … getting it early (more rental income) … possibly more durable … longer warranty … and perhaps a bit more prestige. These are not all great reasons, but since these cameras are in high demand for rentals, it has been worth it to pay extra for an M.

The package price for an M is $58k – but that includes Redmotes, EVF, SSD media, Touch LCD, etc. If you’re a stage 3 owner, you can get a minimum working package for probably about $35,000 or so. Those in Stage 4 (before the price increase) you’re probably looking at $40-45,000.

If that seems expensive, consider that the Alex is around $70-80,000 for a similar package … with less resolution … lower frame rates … and other lacking features.

There’s a reason why Vince LaForet got one, Philip Bloom is looking to get one, and many “pro” DSLR shooters are finally taking Red seriously. And it’s not because James Cameron or Peter Jackson bought a 30 or so each :)

I’ve held it, tested it a little, and been on set for some work with it, the Epic is truly an amazing camera.
