another good stuff that most of us don’t need

Do they make a LockCircle body cap for this camera? If not, will probably buy a different camera.

A fantastic camera and a huge event for both the motion and still photo businesses. The camera is a game changer. Now if RED would see fit to make a prosumer camera that the Scarlet was suppose to be, and now isn’t…and priced for mere mortals….that would be fantastic! The perfect time-lapse camera.

I always laugh when Red makes the news.
Their cameras may be nice but the company
    is a joke.

Why, because they aired the entire development of the Scarlet – including the setbacks and bad decisions? To me it simply shows that Janard and his crew were passionate about making a camera that more people (ie underfunded indy film makers) could afford. It was frustrating to watch, but a noble effort.

If they are a “joke”, it’s a mighty good one – their cameras are quickly becoming a common site on production sets…

Let me guess, you were recently fired from their company as the coffee boy and gopher?

Just never sure what to believe when it comes to Red. Kind of heard it all before and then some. I get the impression that the cameras are something special but their PR/Marketing is third world. Which if I suppose is a much better balance than the other way round! But their credibility on deadlines is zero. I just find it fascinating the way this company has managed to polarise people through their own actions as the product cannot be anything other than admirable. It’s almost like they’re snatching defeat from the jaws of victory! If Red put out an announcement that Christmas is scheduled for 25th December I would absolutely doubt it.

Cue ‘professionals’ berating anyone who doesn’t believe or belong to the niche. These zealots kind of remind me of Apple Mac Pioneers back in the 80′s. If you don’t ‘get it’ you’re an idiot. Or even worse ‘uncool’! Me? I’ve seen amazing things done on humbler kit than Red so i’m curious as to what all the fuss is about. Is it worth the money? Time will tell.

No doubt about that. I dare say that great movies can be made with something like a Cnaon S95 or even a phone. I guess you just use the best that you can afford.

One thing I find odd, though: the APS-C DSLRs are far better video cameras than the Canon 5D, yet the latter is trumpeted as some kind of wunderkamera. It’s the worst of the bunch! So we have this irrational situation where the 5D gets more praise than it deserves (7D etc. are better) and the RED gets bagged because it’s apparently hard to tell the difference between HD and 5K cameras on a 2K display (which won’t be true with the 5D).
