Awesome… new firmware for a virtually unavailable product!

I have one, so it’s available. Can’t you just order one and be patient?

They need to work a little faster in the firmware department. I’d sure like to manually focus this camera.

Yes please fix the manual focus on this camera

Too late, sold mine. Random lockups, slow write times. Useless.

You should use at least memory card class 10 30m/sec

It doesn’t matter what kind of card you use. The camera can’t write fast enough to choke even the slowest card out there. I have tried.

i’m using 45mb/s and it’s fine. shooting raw + jpg normal. it’s also somehow sped up operation of the camera

So did I (I have sold it), but also tested with slower cards, and the difference was almost none. A bit slower if you clock it, but the real experience was nothing to talk about.

Hopefully they’ve improved the AF speed.

Wow! Didn’t know there were so many complaints about this camera!
Goes to show reviewers should focus waaay more on other aspects of the product, not just IQ and how may buttons it’s got.

thats normal. i was looking forward for that camera for so long, then tried it in a shop fully excited and didnt bought it. It just didnt worked as i hoped so.

These concerns have been pointed out in any review by every trustworthy review site. If you didn’t read them or went for spec-sheet-reviews instead, that’s your problem. However, write speed really isn’t an issue, people just like to complain (i.e. everything that isn’t the best possible is bad).

Well said Matt. And also there are many ppl just spreading FUD without owning a product. I don’t have any problems with write speeds nor with AF. Ppl should just read user manuals to learn how to use their cameras. And maybe don’t expect dSLR speeds on non-dSLR cameras. You either know what you’re buying (and what for) or you don’t – but in that case the only thing you can complain about is lack of your own research/capabilities.

I have sold mine, but that was not because of write speed or AF. The AF is fine if you stay in single point singel focus and have some light. The reason I sold mine was because of absolutely useless manual focus.

Good Point!!! This thing MF is worst thing ever, seriously, if you like manual focus look somewere else.
I am hoping they can improve it via firmware, otherwise I will sell mine too

I have feeling that some people do not really read reviews, just skip to conclusion.

      From DPR’s X100 review:
      Appendix: Bugs, quirks and eccentricities

Tried for a week in Ireland, and missed so many pictures because of these 2 seconds warmup time that I gave it back with no regrets.

No firmware update can correct lousy buttons pattern and weakness in buffer size.

Sorry, image quality is not everything, when the camera won’t trigger.

quick start enabled reduces start up time to 0.7s. ppl really need to read user manuals – everything is there in black on white

Classic Fuji behavior: Shelling out an awesome technology, overprice it, bundle it in an enticing but useless product and then scramble to get it to work as it should have with firmwares and customer-non-disclosed fixes. Learned my lesson back with the S5… X100 is not up to snuff.

Overprice? Fuji makes niche products. Niche markets make for higher prices. It’s standard economics. The only comparable camera is the Leica X1, which misses the viewfinder and is more expensive. At least Fuji is willing to release firmware updates, instead of companies just letting faults be and focusing on new cameras instead.

At this point gonna wait for the bigger buffer, blades not sticking, all black version!

I have one with version 1.01 and have not yet updated it. However, for shooting on the street it’s perfect as it. Brilliant, lightening quick camera producing sumptuous files. I quickly got used to the weird focusing and I have no problem with it at all.

Wish it could do manual everything in movie mode though.

I hazard to say that these comment sections are so full of complainers because they:

1.) Don’t have the camera or lens and think a high posting count makes them expert, in their opinion, so they spout off and denigrate every little nit.
2.) The complainers are not out shooting because they sit around criticizing some one who designed and manufactured a complicated piece of machinery, while they have never contributed any real expertise to design or manufacture themselves. They are the true “consumers”. B&C all the time about everything makes them feel as if they are contributing and important in their eyes, but have never produced anything worth while besides hot air.

Never have so many said so much about so little.

Its a good P&S, best out there. Made to look retro and the IQ is very nice, but usibility is that of a P&S camera. Its great for slow thoughful photography. i would never use it for street, but there are different kinds of street I guess.

i don’t know what you mean by that, i guess it’s one of the best cameras for street. just use zone focusing and your problems are fixed (that’s how most of the street photography used to be done anyway and am sure lot of street photographers use it these days). it’s quiet, discreet excellent for candids. not sure where’re you coming from. just use MF, AF-L/AE-L button to lock focus, make sure you have smaller aperture to have good DoF and off you go, just shoot, no need to to focus again, unless the distance of your subject is out of DoF (which makes sense)

The X100 is no point & shoot. To call it that does a disservice to both the camera and those contemplating buying one.

    • Posted October 2, 2011 at 7:31 pm | Permalink

      WOW! Seriously?

Hands down one of the best currently available digital cameras for street photography……other than a Leica which I can’t afford. Sure it has it’s “problems” but so what. Learn to work around them and in the end it will even make you a better at what you do. My biggest issue was the fact that its 35mm equivalent, but now I’m getting used to it and in the end I became a better photographer.

In the old days I set my manual focus 35mm film camera to an average focus distance at about f8 and just shot away, half the time not even looking through the viewfinder…

In 2011, I would hope that a $1200 camera could auto-focus as intended.

That said, since it is basically unavailable (discontinued) it is a rather mute point.

I guess it’s only direct competition is the upcoming Nex-7+16mm? I am confident that camera will actually be in stores. Too bad about the shiny silver lens…

To each their own, but I love the X100. Plenty fast with a 45mb for the type of shooting it’s designed for (I’m coming from Leica). Can’t wait for the interchangeable lens model. Mine has paid for itself several times over already.

The People who always complain about new technology have obviously never used a medium format/35 camera before,I am sure it took as long to rewind”by hand” ,and that’s not even mentioning the processing of the film, believe me more than the few seconds that you might get with the x100,you either love photography or you don’t.
