Sigma confirms: no plans for mirrorless interchangeable lens camera for now

In a recent interview with IR, Sigma representative confirmed what they already mentioned few months ago - the company has no plans to introduce a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera for now:

Q: We are seeing a lot of momentum with mirrorless or compact system cameras in general, and we are excited to see you continue to release great lenses for those mounts. There is an interview with someone from Sigma China a little while back that got a lot of coverage when the representative was reported to say that Sigma had no plans for its own mirrorless camera system. Can you confirm whether that is true?

A: Currently, we're not planning to make a mirrorless camera, because we're prioritizing support for existing systems, our SD and DP cameras. We have to take care of our existing customers. But that doesn't mean that Sigma will never make compact system cameras in the future. Right now, it is true that we don't have any plans to do so.

Should the DP Merrills be interchangeable lens cameras the battery life might be as low as 30 shots per charge…

  • Opps!

    Shame

Yep. I for one would buy Fevon sensor Sigma e-mount mirrorless camera.
I’d buy SD-1 Merrill if not the fact that it’s using Sigma bayonet, so I end up with no lenses or option to adapt anything on it. With E-mount version I could at least use all my lenses. Which is a huge deciding factor for me as I don’t see any future for Sigma mount (yea, it likely won’t fade away completely any time soon, but it’s not making any progress either).

More importantly, when is their 35mm F1.4 going to be available for order?? and at what price.

What’s the point of making an announcement if they don’t have that information

I’ll never understand all the secrecy in the camera industry — seriously consumer unfriendly and annoying

The reason is actually quite simple: To prevent you from buying a competing product.

And it’s not only camera companies! Many tech companies do this in some way (early announcements) or other (a “paper launch” with only a few available units, for example).

Some companies even announce products that don’t even exist but that can backfire dramatically if the company isn’t able to deliver them punctually. These products are often called “vaporware” by the public and get a bad name and regularly suffer bad sales numbers.

You call it “unfriendly and annoying” – they call it “necessary for survival or increasing profits”. You may blame the companies but you can really thank the shareholders for this behaviour.

(Note, that I’m also only a consumer and don’t condone this.)
