Tokina employees confirmed that a new Pentax full frame DSLR camera is under development and prototypes already exist. It seems that Pentax also confirmed their full frame DSLR camera plans in an interview with PentaxForums. Rumors about a full frame Pentax DSLR camera has been circulating since 2009.

Update: here is the video clip from the interview with PentaxForums:

Here is the translation/transcript:

In regard to full-frame cameras, at this point to be honest, even I also thought about whether we should make them or not, but right now I think that we should make them. Even within the company this idea had many opinions on it and some who thought it was a bad idea, but now many people are open to the idea of making full-frame cameras. The development of the technology is advancing and at this point it is being presented.

they are talking about FF since 2011…

I just hope it will be worth the waiting. Make it compact like K5 and with a reasonable price and i will buy it.

they need to wake up now, it is too late , they should make an ultimate APS-C D-SLR since both Canon and Nikon quit making any serious APS-C semi-pro models such as the 7D the D300s, the D7000,etc.
but hope they come up with some nice 645 mirrorless system very soon.

    • greg

It’s to late, but for You. I don’t get it, why enybody would think it’s to late. It is never to late. They don’t want to be a market leader.

Oh yes, they teach it at the best schools of economics that your goal is not to be a market leader, but an outsider. That’s funny, kids.

    • BP2012

From my point of view they already have an ultimate APS-C DSLR and It’s name is K-5 IIs. Best image quality on big prints (A2 size) and most intuitive and simple usage is enough to qualify that camera for the ultimate APS-C DSLR. Off course it’s not perfect because autofocus and flash control could be improved and new lenses could be cheaper but it’s the APS-C camera that is able to produce best results in hands of a semi-pro photograper.

      • Fants

        +1.

      • Karol Wojdyna

As for APS-C I agree with you. I would add, that AF should be A WAY BETTER, because it is very unreliable. It was so since the first AF Pentax I holded in my hands.

I’ll quote myself from 5 months ago: “There will be a FF from Pentax but it won’t be available before february 2013″.

As the matter of fact that prediction won’t be totaly accurate, but it looks like prototype based on Sony sensor is finaly here.

Folks, wake up, it’s real this time :)

it will be an instant buy for me, if price will not go above 2500 bucks. Anyway I’m really hapy with my K5 and fixed focal lenght range lenses (31, 50, 55, 77, 85, 100, 200) which all are compatible with FF. I see no reason to switch brands for FF only. But I will go with superior K mount camera for my lenses.

    • Karol Wojdyna

Try D700, not to mention higher, and you’ll see reasons for FF.

Regular DA lenses are all compatible with full-frame cameras. I use the 50-200mm f/4-5.6 on film SLRs and there is no major vignetting (unlike DX over FX) The corners and edges aren’t perfectly sharp, but that’s all.

Oh, yes. And my fiat’s punto engine is designed by ferrari engineers so it is JUST A LITTLE weaker than Testarossa’s one, but powers Ferrari replica almost as good as the original :)

  • jake

actually they said it would not be a D-SLR but mirrorless or hybrid finder camera.

    • Alex

No, they didn’t. Don’t make things up.

  • Karol Wojdyna

    Pentax, you are SMURFIN’ LATE!

    • mythbuster

Late for you maybe, but not late for a lot of potential buyers. Anyway, Pentax is doing so good in APSC, that I don´t think they need to go FF.

      • Karol Wojdyna

It is late for them since “a lot of potential buyers” is A WAY smaller “a lot” than could be. People switched brands, haven’t you noticed? You’re placing myths here AGAIN, Mythbuster

I’m testing one of the prototypes: 3 different configurations exist. The one I currently have has the same sensor as the D600/A99 … There is another model which has the same sensor as the D4 (much more expensive as a final product)… so far I’m loving it. Too bad I have to keep it taped up whenever I have it outside though. :(
ISO goes to 102,400 and is clean up to 12,800 (I mean, perfectly clean) Burst is still 7fps. Body is heavier than my K-5 IIs but is the same size (just heavier because of the larger mirror/prism. SR works like a dream, and the new features they are trying to implement… wow! (Bugs still have to be worked out with some of them… most of them…)

Not allowed… But I’ll ask if I can. (I’ll find a way around the NDA they had me sign.)

Meanwhile: It doesn’t mention the lens at all, 24-120mm f/4 ED [IF] DC WR … Focus is still slow, but actually pretty damn awesome piece of glass. Its not ultra-sharp at f/4, and it’s still not completely sealed in like the Nikkor 70-200 where not even zooming the lens will change its length, but I like it… I’d prefer it to be lighter though, as it kind of makes the body front-heavy… Would also be nice to include a tripod. I’ll post some photos taken with it, just don’t be disappointed (I was… Still sticking with my FA limiteds for now)

And one last thing: Battery grip boosts FPS. Just found that out last night. Goes up to 9fps
