The E 16-50, which is a very popular lens, is a power zoom.

    Point ‘n Shoot NEX. :-/

The zoom lever is useful for video as long as zoom function is silent and an external microphone can be attached. It may a good alternative for shooting video on the cheap.

Also, it may be compatible with the new 16-50 power zoom lens when in manual focus mode, although compatible lenses need to be parfocal as I think 16-50 pz is.

This picture indicates 2 big changes in the nex line.

    1. Smart accessory port will be dismissed completely. I don’t believe that Sony will continue producing flashes and mics for just one model (nex-5). So the nex-5x will get the new MI-Hotshoe. This just makes sense, because the MI is more versatile and takes viewfinders and all possible Sony accessories (although there is not much available yet).

    2. More small PZ Lenses are coming. It wouldn’t make any sense to put a zoom lever on the body if there is just 2 lenses that support zoom via body. So my prediction would be a new small tele zoom within this year

whereas samsung is trying to be innovative, its almost comical how sony is now catering more to the point and shoot crowd. one step forward, two steps back. where are the lenses that we so desperately need sony?

at this pace, it almost looks like sony has lost direction and just blindly throwing the same recycled cameras at us for the past 2 years. looks like samsung will come out on top, just like they did with the tvs, cell phones, etc. maybe the samsung execs were right after all with their bold statement about how they will be the #1 mirrorless manufacturer by 2015

It is true that Sony has a lens issue, but they have excellent bodies covering the whole span from p&s-like to serious with all sorts of wheels and buttons. I can’t exactly see Samsung being vastly superior. They have the advantage of not having to waste resources on a doomed slr line, the same problem that is holding back Olympus.
In some sense, though, Samsung is already the biggest camera maker in the world, followed by Apple. I know, they don’t make the cameras themselves, but still.

“whereas samsung is trying to be innovative, its almost comical how sony is now catering more to the point and shoot crowd.”

And the Samsung mirrorless cameras aren’t point and shoots? The Nex-5, 6 and 7 series are point and shoots? If Samsung wants to be innovative, why don’t they innovate better sensors? :)

For the record, I do hope Samsung comes up with cameras that are just as good, if not better than what others have… it can only help those who want to take photos.
