do we need that many cameras?

We do not, Oly does. To keep their fingers on the pulse. And they are correct.

From a business perspective, innovation is the only way to grow these days in contracting markets

      • Lorenzaccio

Uh… innovation? You mean the number 7 instead of 6 (ah right, outside Japan we are stuck with 5… well, nobody noticed)

  • TinusVerdino

e-pl 1 to 7 they all take pictures but each consecutive one has more specs that won’t do anything for most people.

We know for a fact that “leaps” in technology come every 2-3 years in cameras (sometimes 4-5 years). While some may say this is camera pollution (a lame term from people who don’t like freedom of a plethora of choices, like Tom, apparently), the fact is that this is one more weight on the scale that tips technology forward. And thats good for everyone.

Another camera I don’t need, yawn. Maybe reasonably priced in 1 year when they run the fire sale.

The Olympus PEN E-PL6 is 1 year old — Olympus is doing its job correctly to release a “refresh” in this highly competitive market.

  • NoNonsense

    Yawn, m43.

The big leap was from the E-PL3 to the E-PL5. I’m not sure there have been any real improvements that would make getting an E-PL7 worthwhile. Unless they manage to shrink it down to GM1 size.

    • Global

It might be small, but every incremental improvement pushes us forward — and all photographers benefit from that. When companies sit on their asses for 5 years not releasing any upgrade, and then only a tiny upgrade comes out — that’s when we should yawn in their faces. These yearly upgrades with small features has had a tremendously positive effect on the market (which at one time did nothing but chase megapixels!). The fact that the big guys now have to be self-conscious about tilting screens, FPS, AF points, types of AF points, AF speed, etc, etc, because a bunch of little companies are each pushing forward in one or another of those kinds of small details — its a very good thing for photographers everywhere.

The only one’s against it are the companies that used to take more profit off the top of consumers by releasing no updates!

        What a lot of bollocks.

        • Andrzej Lukowiec

Thank God it’s just your opinion…

  • Danonino

It will also have the function we all just love: Shitter shock.

  • Eagle Of morningcalm

I want to see FN1 and FN2 button instead of zoom button

  • trevc

Yawn. Too many to choose from already. Where’s the lenses? How long ago was the 150mm Prime announced? When will the 300 prime show up? Sigh.
