What’s exciting about a ‘light’ version of an existing produkt for a lower price ? I wouldn’t would call a bargain exciting except if it’s limited in quantity. Does it make a product exciting when it’s cheap ?

Yes – cause Sony is crossing the border set by Canon and Nikon on how much should FF camera cost.

A 24 megapixel full-frame camera that comes in at $2000 or less would certainly be exciting to many.

Any full-frame sensor with 12-24 MP at $2000 would be welcomed by the crowd.

The audience for this lens really would not care about video, as most probably don’t.

FF at a reasonable price would sell a lot of cameras.

There are pros and wide-angle enthusiasts who really need it.

And judging from the Nikon Rumor forums, lots of people who just WANT full frame.

Me, I’m happy with DX, and don’t want to get suckered into buying anything from Sony. No need to go into it here, but I just loathe that company.

but in the long term would lead to Nikon to NEED to have an affordable FF too :-)

The d700 is already somewhat affordable as it is ($2300USD), so it seems it won’t be all that long before it sits at the $2000 mark.

dude.. just by buying DX you’re buying Sony product. Sorry, man… but that sensor and motherboard belong to S O N Y… you can’t escape them, love them or hate them… they’re just everywhere. Your choices are going to have to lie outside of Nikon bodies… and outside of pretty much 65-70% of the point and shoot cameras out there, including every single Canon Powershot. Avoiding Sony in digital imaging is like avoiding gravity at the gates of a black hole.

It’d be weird to have an A850 without an A800
It just might be an A730 or A800 to replace the A700 and an A930 updating the A900 with Live View and perhaps video

Doesn’t Nikon use Sony sensors ?

Well just a update with Nikon : Their D5000 is failing and it is getting recalled. Wow…

Nikon will pay for shipping/repair tho…

This is a power cell issue, not a sensor issue. Hence the cameras that are already using the D5000 sensor (see the A700) do NOT have a failure issue. Therefore this is a strictly Nikon issue. Sony’s had sensor recalls in the past… this one’s not on them.

Most exciting = something better than Canon 1Ds Mark III or Nikon D3X , if not I don’t find it exciting at all

Well the A900 outresolves both the 1DSMkIII and the D3x in linear resolution for considerably less money. It has better onboard flash processing and color accuracy than the Canon, and is far simpler to set up and use on the fly than the Nikon.. and it offers 3.5 stops of stabilization built in, something neither Nikon nor Canon can offer. It may not have the ISO 3200 output of either company but for $5k less I find that to be far more exciting than either the D3x or the 1DsMkIII… and that’s on an existing model.

I only touched the A900 once on a Sony booth, but I felt it was really appealing.
The viewfinder was much brighter than any other from Canon/Nikon. I still prefer the viewfinder of my Pentax 67ii tho.. MF rulez da world :) )

“The A900 outresolves the Nikon D3X”????
Try to look at bit on: http://www.dxomark.com/ and see that this is simply not the case. Not that the A900 is a bad, it’s very good for the cost, but I guess that to some extend you get what you pay for….

UP TO 3.5 stops. 2stops if more realistic. And certainly not 3.5 stops for tele stuff.

Disagree. Can hand hold the 70-400G at 1/15 approx 80% of the time (depends on my caffeine intake)… and that’s 5 stops+ Trust me. In-body stabilization works JUST fine. And, frankly, show me a stabilized fisheye lens or any other angle of coverage wider than 24. People say you don’t need it…. oh but you can SO use it well…

And to STJ: I would tend to agree with you on a certain level but I think it’s pretty clear that, for the money, the A900 offers quite a bit more value for the dollar. The D3X is simply not worth anything more than, POSSIBLY, $5999. Period. I don’t care how much Sony is charging for that sensor.

        @dyna
no the A900 do not outresolves Nikon and Canon and I prefer a Canon 5 D Mark II than the A900
Let’s see what will come from Sony and Leica … the Leica S2 at 18000 euro (or dollars) is not in competition with Nikon and Canon

I’d rather see something better than the D3 or 1dIII. Sony certainly lacks a speedy camera to compete!
