Pentax to announce another cheaper mirrorless camera

Nikkei.com reported that Ricoh Pentax will announce another low-priced miorrorless camera (priced at  ¥50,000, around $600). Pentax already has the entry level Q model and the recently announced K-01 mirrorless camera, while Ricoh has the mirrorless GXR system.

Why don’t they try designing one for enthusiasts? All this consumer-oriented, low-price stuff is really getting old. Don’t point-and-shoot upgraders have enough options already?

I wouldnt mind if it was a smaller, cheaper than k01, mirrorless with k-5 sensor. god, even if it was k-r sensor i would seriously consider buying it considering the amount of pentax glass i have

  • rainwilds

They need to release an update to the K5 already!

  • BP2012

    Another one with tiny sensor?
    Cmon we want FX mirrorless.

  • A FULLFRAME PENTAX!

    FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

GIVE THE CUSTOMER WHAT THEY WANT PENTAX! A FULLFRAME MIRRORLESS CAMERA! ENOUGH WITH THE CRAP! NO MORE Q, 645D, K-01!

AT THE VERY LEAST A FULLFRAME DSLR REPLACEMENT FOR THE K-5!

    • lonoise

are they……Really? I’d like to see them produce one but I wouldn’t buy it, I couldn’t afford it, would you?

    • Raffwal

645D crap? Certainly not. However, I agree that the potential customer base for it is rather small and it is not what most are waiting for.

K-01 crap? I actually think they made many right decisions with this camera. The excellent Sony sensor. SR. A clever new way of using the legacy K mount while making new lenses that protrude to the camera body making the combination smaller. Where they failed – and ruined the whole camera – was the lack of any kind of a viewfinder.

Q crap? Absolutely. Combining the worst aspects of P&S and system cameras. A violation to all the senses.

        +1

Excuse me…but have you actually used the Q?
I doubt it very much. I suggest you do before making ridiculous comments like the one above.

  • Marcin

All I need in photography is FULLFRAME by Pentax !!

  • AnuN

I hope it’ll have the Q mount. It’s much more interesting that the K…

I just came from the photo lab with a developed and scanned film. I’ve been shot in parallel the same subjects at the same time with K5+Sigma 17-70 (very good lens) and K-1000+Pentax 35-105+ordinary Kodak color plus 200.
Believe me or not almost all scanned film frames without post-processing looks better than post-processed K-5 files.
Excellent contrast, sharpness, colors, beautifull bokeh and better overall look.

WE WANT FULLFRAME DIGITAL CAMERA MADE BY PENTAX!

  • Gex

A mirrorless camera even cheaper than the K01?!? Way to go Pentax…

  • Philippos

    A CHEAPER CAMERA ???? YEAHHHHHH!!!!

Wait! What! Lenses are now more expensive than ever? And they are going to get more expensive still? And what is that? A modified firmware-locked mount that only accepts DA and DFA lenses – so no more cheap second-hand lenses? WTF???

Pentax has been bought by a company that relies on printers and they have just applied their modus operandi to the camera department.
Sell cheap printers and expensive inks = Sell cheap cameras and expensive lenses.

I have been (and still am) a Pentax fanboy. Their products have always suited me and I have been more than satisfied by them. I even placed an order for a K-01 to use as a VideoDSLR, despite my objections on it’s design.
However, I am feeling less and less excited with every new product release. K10 was a great camera. K20 was good, and it would have been great if there never was a K10. K5 is very good and it would have been even greater too, if there never was a K7. It seems true innovation is not anywhere near the minds of Ricoh (or Hoya). The last great project of the brand was the 645D that was started before Pentax was bought off by anyone.

Caring for profit is not bad for any business. Caring for nothing more than profit is a crime. For the first time I feel like abandoning my favourite brand. I know there is a K5S(uper) on the way, but as a K5 owner, I don’t know if it will be enough to revive my faith to the brand.
Don’t get me wrong, I love all my Pentax gear, I never had any problems with it, every bit of hardware I have bought the last thirty years is as functional as it was when I bought it and I have no plans to sell any of my gear. But it is not only artistic inspiration that drives me to take photographs. Just like a new car or a new motorcycle begs us to take it for a spin, so do new cameras. My most productive periods in photography have always been the ones following the purchase of a new camera or a new lens. If I find my future cameras to be boring, or uninspiring, the drive to make new images will be weaker, and that can lead to being not satisfied from tha brand anymore and eventually abandoning it.
I still hope the people at Pentax have something up their sleeve to keep me faithfull.
