Pentax Q price drops almost 40%

When the Pentax Q was announced a year ago, the price for a kit with a lens was set at $800 which was pretty high considering the camera's specs. After the recent Pentax lens price increase, the price of the smallest mirrorless camera dropped by almost 40% to $499. The two lens kit now sells for $750.

Maybe Ricoh-Pentax will announce a new version during Photokina? Rumors about a new cheap mirrorless camera are already floating around.

still too expensive for plastic china junk without real mechanical or optical parts.

    • camerageek

Ahh I love it when common fools like you comment. The Pentax Q is not made of plastic. It’s nearly all metal, magnesium alloy actually the same stuff they build Nikon D4’s and Canon 1DX’s from.

      Thank you for showing the whole world your incompetence. As a reward for your idiocy can you please;

      1) Sterilize any children or grandchildren you may have to prevent the further genetic pollution of the human race.

      2) Castrate yourself for the same reason. Usually I would ask you to kill yourself but complete idiocy that only comes from dancing around in your grandma’s panties while smearing yourself in orange marmalade is rare.

Still too expensive considering what you can buy this days with that money.

While this camera has not been popular in North America, I see many copies of Q around in japan. Mostly purchased by young/younger females. It attracts many same users that own Holga/Dianna cameras. Also see them owned by females who like to shoot with 6×6 medium format film camera.

For my shooting it is too expensive, and would just use iPhone to create it style of images. But for real photography, my D4 and X-Pro1 work much better. Despite high price, Q still sells well, but price does not make it attractive when compared to other Pentax mirrorless.

        • Harold Ellis

well young, younger females are buying whatever retailers tell them to buy.

          • Dan

Not my experience. Most young women know at least more than young men at the same age. And I have never seen a retailer push the Q – but then I don’t live in Japan.

And I really don’t see why people keep calling the Q “plastic”. I wont buy the Q for many reasons but one thing you really cant complain about is the build quality and handling. It more or less equals DSLR’s like canon 60D or Nikon D7000.

With the new price it is actually interesting. What you get is a compact camera with a price premium for superior build and handling.

        yea right…

Pentax Q is just a half scarfskin of alloy, but is inside the plastic truly.

Nikon D4, D3, D700, d800, D300 and Canon 1D (without 5Dx), these are inside the alloy build, not scarfskin alloyed.

Your comment is so badly informed that you clearly have never even held one of these, let alone tested it well enough to opine.

Pentax is preparing market for the new mirrorless camera that should be positioned between Q and K-01

This is a well built camera with surprisingly good IQ, like the K-01. Also, it doesn’t appear quite as ugly as the frontal product photos, nor does it feel awkward to hold. I was planning to buy one second hand for use with C-mount and for long lensing. This price change simply makes it very affordable for me to do so.

Yeah, I’m thinking the same, and as an added bonus, due to Q-mount short flange you can adapt easily even D-mount cine lenses.

  • Kevin

i like the idea of this camera but it’s just too niche of a market.

this camera competes with the S100 IMO, along with all other pocketable cameras so the competition is pretty fierce and may not sell enough to keep itself alive for a long time.

  • Herege

    Still too expensive.

I see aPentax iQ coming .
i for some type of wireless feature .
and also some social media feature , ie Facebook , Twitter , ect ..

I really do not get it … why Pentax made this and what was the target they had in mind …
Probably the biggest digital system failure to date …

    • Harold Ellis

probably because “Pentax is one of the biggest digital system failure to date …”

compare what pentax is now to what pentax was years ago.

some managers just have talent to ruin down great company
