I think your average consumer will the camera that has more of those megga-things. Unless the Canon is much cheaper, I see this as a win for Nikon.

No, Nikon is stupid for putting 24 megapixels on a consumer camera. Thats a 40 inch print! what is a consumer going to do with a 40 inch image?… I even bet that the D3100 has better image quality.

Well, what about the fact that the Sony 24MP sensor simply stomps all over Canon’s aging 18MP sensor in terms of performance?

Yeah, 24MP’s probably a bit much on a low-end body like the D3200. But it’s got advantages even if you don’t print big. And well, it’s just a better sensor than anything else in APS-C except maybe Sony’s 16MP sensor.

What really surprises me here is that Canon is still recycling their 18MP sensor. Yeah, it was pretty good when the 7D came out, but today it’s out performed even by the latest 4/3rds sensor (yes, the Canon is cleaner at high ISO than the 16MP m43 sensor. But like their 15MP APS-C sensor Canon achieved good noise performance by wiping out the fine detail at high ISO, their 18MP sensor barely outresolves a 12MP sensor at ISO 6400, the 16MP m43 sensor outresolves it at ISO 6400, or if NR is added the smaller 16MP sensor will be cleaner at the same amount of detail resolution).
