May 2024 CIPA numbers: camera shipments hit a three-year high

CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association in Japan) published their latest camera production data (orange: 2024, black: 2023, blue: 2022):

May 2024 CIPA numbers by ZoetMB

Compared to last May (just for that one month), mirrorless units were up 8.4% and lens shipments were up 8.1%.  However, year-to-date unit and shipped value numbers are down compared to last month, except for full frame lenses, which are up substantially.   Note that YTD shipped value for compacts is double that of DSLRs.

CIPA has predicted 5.89m ILCs, 1.52m compacts and 9.57m lenses for calendar 2024.  Based on 2023 shipping patterns, ILC’s could conceivably come in at 6.6m units. (That’s lower than we predicted last month).

That compares to:*

2023: 6.001 million bodies (+1.25%), 9.639 million lenses (-0.92%).
2022: 5.927 million bodies (+10.8%), 9.7 million lenses (+1.6%).
