There are two new interviews with Olympus executives. In the first one with CameraJabber, Setsuya Kataoka (Olympus Division Manager) said that Olympus once considered developing a medium format camera like Fujifilm did with the GFX.
The second interview is from DigitalTrends with General Manager Elija Shirota, autofocus expert Tetsuo Kikuchi and Senior Supervisor Hisashi Yoneyama - here is the interview recap from 43addict:
- Olympus wants the Olympus OM-D E-M1X to be the most reliable camera around
- The dual processors for the E-M1X were for reliability
- The grip is fixed because it makes the camera more reliable
- The grip also needs to be fixed so the camera has the exact same position of the buttons and shutter release vertically or horizontally, which lets you keep your eyes on the subject
- Olympus once brought up factoring the rotation of the earth as being the main factor limiting their IBIS, but they found a few more things to tweak and now are confident no brand will ever surpass 7.5 stops without factoring for the rotation of the earth
- Designing the dual engines wasn’t easy
- This is their first completely new camera in a while
- AF speed was a focal point
- Hand-held high-resolution mode was a big achievement and they even used hand-shake to make it work so users can carry smaller cameras without a bigger sensor
- Olympus uses phase detect AF for m0vies now
- The E-M1X has AF performance well beyond the E-M1
- The E-M1X has the same low light AF abilities as the E-M1 Mark2, but it is more effective in 9-point autofocus mode
- Olympus believes their 9-point autofocus is as good as any DSLR on the market
- Olympus won’t say anything more than they are using a new algorithm
- Their deep learning system is created by a computer interpreting 10,000 photos per category that are labeled by hand
- Olympus plans to bring their deep learning to future systems, but, for now, it requires dual processors to work
- Other companies are using some deep learning, but Olympus is the only one fully utilizing it with cars, trains, and planes
