Digital cameras: a dying breed after smartphones wipe out decades of industry growth
Statista published two different charts showing camera ownership and shipments over the years:
Digital cameras - a dying breed?
"As the following chart based on data from Statista Consumer Insights shows, digital camera ownership has declined across the globe over the past few years, and it’s probably not a stretch to assume that usage has declined by even more than that. A look at global camera sales shows an industry in disarray, as more than 30 years of growth have been wiped out over the past decade."
Smartphones wipe 0ut decades of camera industry growth:
"To the camera and photo equipment industry, the rise of smartphone photography has had devastating effects. According to CIPA, a Japan-based industry group with members such as OM Digital Solutions (formerly Olympus), Canon and Nikon, worldwide camera shipments dropped by 94 percent between 2010 and 2023, wiping out decades of growth. The steep decline was mainly driven by a drop-off in shipments of digital cameras with built-in lenses, the type that casual photographers used to rely on prior to the rise of smartphone photography. In 2023, CIPA members shipped just 1.7 million cameras with built-in lens, down from almost 109 million in 2010."
Samyang announced “Remaster Slim”: the world’s first optical exchange autofocus ultra-slim lens
The previous Samyang teaser was for a new "Remaster Slim" lens that was officially announced today - the world’s first optical exchange autofocus ultra-slim lens that allows you to exchange only the optical elements (optical system) inside the lens instead of replacing the entire lens:
