CIPA 2018 camera shipments recap, 2019 predictions

CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association in Japan) issued their 2018 camera shipments recap:

In 2018 total shipments decreased by 22.2% year on year in digital cameras with a significant decline in built-in lens digital cameras. In interchangeable lens digital cameras, having taken over the position of core product, failed to fill the gap.

Shipments of interchangeable lens digital cameras decreased only less than 10% year on year. So did those of interchangeable lenses

CIPA also published their outlook on the 2019 camera shipments:

Total shipments (the cumulative total of shipments from January to December) of digital cameras in 2019 are projected to be 16.9 million units, a year-on-year decline of 12.9%. Of those, shipments to Japan and those to regions outside of Japan are projected to be 2.5 million units (a year-on-year decrease of 10.7%) and 14.4 million units (a year-on-year decline of 13.3%), respectively.

Broken down by product type, shipments of built-in lens digital cameras are projected to be 6.9 million units (a year-on-year fall of 20.7%). Of those, shipments to Japan and those to regions outside of Japan are projected to be 1.5 million units (a year-on-year decrease of 16.7%) and 5.4million units (a year-on-year decline of 21.7%), respectively. Shipments of interchangeable lens digital cameras are projected to be 10.0 million units (a year-on-year fall of 7.4%). Of those, shipments to Japan and those to regions outside of Japan are projected to be 1.0 million units (a year-on-year fall of 9.1%) and 9.0 million units (a year-on-year decrease of 7.2%), respectively.

Shipments of interchangeable lenses are projected to fall 8.3% year on year to 16.5 million units. Of those, shipments to Japan and those to regions outside of Japan are projected to decline 14.3% year on year to 1.8 million units and 8.1% year on year to 14.7 million units, respectively.

As in 2018, decreased shipments of built-in lens digital cameras will significantly weigh on total shipments of digital cameras. In contrast, shipments of interchangeable lens digital cameras will stay above 90% of the level a year before. So will shipments of interchangeable lenses. Against shipments of interchangeable lens digital cameras (bodies), those of interchangeable lenses, the other main actor, are projected to be larger by a factor of 1.6 to 1.7.

CIPA released their 2018 graphs and the downturn continued also in December – the total number of shipped digital cameras is lower compared to the same month in previous years (orange: 2018, black: 2017, blue: 2016, click for larger view):

Panasonic Lumix S mirrorless lenses MTF charts and lens design diagrams

Several readers noticed that Panasonic is fudging the LUMIX S lens MTF charts by using non-uniform X axis. To an uninformed reader, the LUMIX S MTF charts may look flatter when comparing to MTF charts from others who use standard linear axis. Here are the re-adjusted LUMIX S MTF charts to a standard linear axis. Attached are the charts comparing to Panasonic’s and the re-adjusted ones (left is re-adjusted, right is Panasonic’s):

Panasonic has a patent for 18mm f/4 APS-C mirrorless lens (L-mount?)

Panasonic has filed a new patent P2019-15827A for an 18mm f/4 mirrorless lens designed for APS-C based cameras. Could it be that Panasonic is working on a new mirrorless camera with L-mount?

Leica already has two APS-C L-mount mirrorless cameras (Leica TL2 and Leica CL) and a few lenses.

In an interview with Dpreview a few months ago Sigma confirmed their plans to develop APS-C lenses for L-mount, while Panasonic said that they will not make APS-C lenses for L-mount:

Canon to accelerate development of new mirrorless products (2018 financial results are out)

Canon’s 2018 financial results are out:

  • Canon expects its annual operating profit to drop for the first time in three years
  • Canon forecasts an operating profit of 325 billion yen ($2.97 billion) for 2019, down 5.2 percent from 342.95 billion yen a year earlier – the first decline since 2016
  • Tough competition in mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and a stronger yen are also expected to hurt Canon’s earnings.
  • Canon shares have lost about 30 percent over the past year as the company slashed its annual profit forecast twice (Reuters)

Here are the slides related to the company’s camera business (above slide indicates accelerated development of new mirrorless products):
