Yes, Sony a700 is discontinued but what is the replacement?

sony-a850The previous report about the Sony a700 being discontinued came back in August. Now, Sony Europe (Netherlands) confirms that directly in an email - the a700 is replaced by the "Alpha 8 series". Do they mean the a850? Not sure why they would replace a 1.5x crop sensor DSLR with a full frame DSLR. Maybe they mean the rumored a800?

Dear mr. V.,
Regarding your request, I have investigated the matter.
It is true that the DSLR-A700 is no longer available.
The replacement of the DSLR-A700 will after all be the Alpha 8-series.
I hope to have informed you sufficiently,

Kind regards,
Sony Support
