Panasonic/Leica 25mm f/1.4 Summilux lens patent

Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 lens patent

Panasonic filed a patent 2012-226309 for a new 25mm f/1.4 Summilux lens for Micro Fourth Thirds cameras. For comparison, here is the lens design of the current Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH model:

Canon filed a patent 2012-226042 in Japan for 12-28mm f/2-3.2 and 14-28mm f/1.4-2.4 lenses that are probably designed for a high end compact camera with 1.33" sensor. The G1x has 1.5" sensor and the G15 has 0.59" sensor - maybe there will be a new model in between?

The patent was filed in April 2011, so it’s likely a variant of the existing model and not a replacement.

12-28mm and 14-28mm seem like a rather narrow range of zoom for a compact?

      tell that to Nikon 14-24….

Isn’t that a DLSR lens? If it’s a lens on a compact, which model is it on? I’d be interested in a camera like that.

I’m thinking Canon was maybe actually thinking about joining the m43.

        • J Shin

          I mean, DSLR. 🙂

        • I don’t think Canon will be joining MFT – it just happened that the size of the sensor for those lenses is 4/3 inches (not 4:3).

        • Canon wanting to make mFT (not m43 btw) is like Mercedes wanting to make sushi trains

  • Boooe

These Canon lenses CANNOT be for MFT, as there is too little space left for focal-plane shutter

  • Slaven

Even if sensor size smaller then current (in G1x), there is possibility of multiaspect frame. Sometimes 4:3 really useless.
