Those are the first images of the upcoming Pentax K-S1 DSLR camera (not to be confused with the Pentax Q-S1 mirrorless camera). There are no rumored specifications for now and the green LED on the grip are mystery (any ideas?).

Hate the design, just so 80s.

    • TyD

80″s future was the real future

  • brian

count down for the self timer?

    • atat

First thing that came to my mind too. Other wild guess, counts the number of faces to help with selfies 😛

    • Tommy

Yup! Self-timer countdown lights! You would only be able to see the lights if you were not holding the grip.

  • Gum Li

Seriouly just keep the k3 design is ok…

  • Gerardo Sanchez

This design is gonna be a love/hate thing… Is just me or the thing is reaaaally small? I dare to say, smaller than a K-x was, except for the hump, which is surely big for a 100% coverage prism

    • Mr.Black

Yes, this thing is probably smallest DSLR on the market (if it is a DSLR).

    • Ross

I think this replaces that ghastly yellow ‘tonka toy’ mirrorless failure. Hopefully this can be more successful.

      • Ah yes. The camera everyone loved to hate yet never used.

      • Rob S

I appreciate your hate. Because of it I got a K-01 with a beautiful 40mm lens for $300.

  • Alvaro.

This is a mirrorless camera! The K-01 replacement, now with an EVF and still with an unconventional design…

    • Gerardo Sanchez

The mirror and the shock absorbing pads in the second shot tells me otherwise…

      • Zos Xavius

Not to mention the huge pentaprism hump that would surely be much smaller if it contained just an EVF.

        • El Aura

Yeah, compare it in size to the Sony A7 viewfinder ‘hump’.

    • Cynog

A mirrorless wouldn’t need a LV button, surely?

      • Ross

You would if you wanted to change from EVF to main display manually, but it still might have that ‘flappy’ mirror of a DSLR. One day that will be only used by retro photogs.

    • This is a possibility, like I said – there are no specs yet.

  • HotDuckZ

    The Pentax way!!

  • Loving or hating the Design, I really like how some are thinking totally outside the box – like the Sigma Quattro!

    • TinusVerdino

This is thinking with one foot in the box and with the other out of it.

  • Marta

Ultra entry level DSLR – this is what it is

  • Greentax

The green light tells motorists to keep moving instead of stopping and staring at the individual with unusually low standards holding a Pentax.

  • KLMatt

So incredibly fake, it is bursting with fakeness. Simply breathtaking fakeitude. Did I mention this is really really obviously a poorly photoshopped fake? If Pentax releases this camera, I will purchase and eat one. Whole.

    • Yup. Perspective on the first image is all wrong.

    • Mr.Black

I’ll send you a Tuscany spice mix. Tastes better.

    • Mistral75

      > If Pentax releases this camera, I will purchase and eat one. Whole.

I have marked your words. I hope you are a man of honour.

    • Mistral75

      > If Pentax releases this camera, I will purchase and eat one. Whole.

      Bon appétit!

  • To count donwn the light-years until the full-frame release 🙂

  • To count donwn the light-years until the full-frame release 🙂

    • sigh

light years is a measure of distance you pentax user

      • Buzz Lightyear

His statement is technically incorrect but it is so true 🙂

  • Ahmad Al-Joboori

Never cared about cameras’ look, but this one is ugly.

  • MaGo

Finally!! A Video-game AND a camera, all in one 🙂

    • Bob Allen

It’s already been done first with the Fuji Finepix V10

  • TheInconvenientRuth

OK, since I’m not under NDA this time, here’s the truth about the LED lights and the lit-up ‘OK’ at the back. The ‘S’ in the name stands for ‘Social Networking’. This camera is for the social networking crowd. The grip is thinner so you can hold it backwards more easily. When you take a photo, it will automatically be uploaded to the social site(s) of your choice. Every time you get a ‘like’ or ‘upvote’ a green LED lights up. This gives you an indication wether you should take more of the same or try something new, like showing more cleavage. 5 green LED’s mean you’re obiously popular and a great poseographer (or half naked), but now everyone can see this while you take the pictures. This in turn will encourage your friends to join you in your selfies, making you even more popular. If you get too many down-votes, the LED’s go red. If you get 5 red LED’s the camera shuts down for 8 hours.

    • Kynikos

      Your information is invaluable.

If you and your partner ever travel to Atlantic Canada, we need to meet for coffee.

      • TheInconvenientRuth

We’ll be in Vancouver over Christmas and looking to buy a house there too 🙂 Time to leave the smog and grime behind! 🙂

    • Sysiphus Sycophant

Having seen some of the previous Pentax offerings, I am afraid you just might be right about the LEDs.

      Great post.

    • Zos Xavius

      I call BS funny guy.

  • Ms.KrystalMeth

I think it a top secret Klingon Anti-Matter..that helps this camera disappear into a stealth one can see you shooting! We are Klingons!

  • Camaman

    Best part of my day!

  • devon

    Why Pentax Why

    • waterengineer

Because Pentax is sooooooo good at missing the mark. That is why.

      • Kevin Opar

They were way ahead of their time with small/pancake primes. They are sooo expensive though.

    • Kevin Opar

Maybe they are trying to get a piece of Canon’s action with the SL1. I’m waiting patiently for the sl1 successor that has built in wifi.

    • BP2012

Because it’s a famous Pentax “why not” strategy.

      • Steve Griffin

        May I watch?

        • TinusVerdino

          What’s it worth to you?

          • Steve Griffin

Not sure. What’s the going rate?

But I’d prefer to join in to be honest – you’d give me a refund anyway so the price is probably irrelevant 😉

  • Eno

Is this some kind of a joke Pentax?

  • Ron Hendriks

Is this maybe a new mirrorless K-mount?

  • Be aware

I need real medical help. Since the moment I saw this rumor I can’t stop singing “Crying time again” by Ray Charles. It is probably some photomarketing trick with influence on viewers subconcious.

  • Daedbird

Why this thing is likely real:
    1. Pentax has been using green LEDs lately
    2. That body was not taken from any other camera – I don’t know of any camera that has that shape. TO create such shapes out of whole cloth would take such a great photoshopper, lone who leaves few or no clues
    3. Photoshoppers usually use bits from other items, that back button complex is so different it has to be real
    4. The prism hump = only a corporation could green light such a non-conformist design, but then push for the flash and prism bits to be parts bin pieces.
    5. The name – Pentax fans would have named this differently. It would be the K-600 or something else

  • J.L. Williams

Obviously one of the designers visited LA, saw a low rider with neon tubes on the underbody, and thought, “We should have that on a camera.” Looks in some of the photos as if there are LEDs around the shutter button and in the 4-way controller, too. Fun, but probably not great for battery life. I do kind of like the sharp-edges-and-curves styling theme, though… it’s like Argus came back from the dead and introduced a mirrorless camera…

  • fne
  • Goose

its a 3d renderin, unless the SR means SUPER REAL.

  • JR

I love my Pentax…….here`s a pic of it! Awesome camera!

  • Mardock

Ambient lighting. GM’s been doing it on all their car interiors lately, so Pentax is just following suit. 😉

  • Confused

This will cannibalize sales of the 645Z. What were Pentax thinking?

  • Neopulse

This feels like a entry level camera that has Wi-Fi capability incorporated, which could explain the LED lights. Maybe it helps judge the strength of the signal. Maybe even a form of wireless tethering. There is a sensor in the front area of the grip. Would like to know why.

  • Wally in Austin

I have no idea what the sensor size is. My first impression was that style wise it looks like a medium format digital camera.

  • MB

How desperate Pentax is … maybe a bit more than Nikon …

  • TinusVerdino
  • Kim White

Just got a K-s1 and was able to attach a SMC Pentex zoom 1:4.5 80mm~200mm to it…
